It's not that bad for me. I just went through sprite lists to figure out my favourite gen in terms of designs:

Gen I is 31% liked
Gen II is 36%
Gen III is 29%
Gen IV is also 29%
and Gen V is 22%

So yeah it's the lowest on my list but it's actually not that bad. Purely in amount of Pokemon per gen I liked 3 more Gen V designs than I did Gen IV and it's only 2 designs off Gen II.

But it took a while for a lot of them to grow on me and theres only 3 designs I really love... so it's definitely my least favourite gen.

Also I didn't realise how many Gen III designs I liked are actually from Gen II.

Gen I = 73.5%
Gen II = 81%
Gen III = 60.5%
Gen IV = 66%
Gen V = 22.6%

Lol. Quite the drop off. But, for Gen VI I already have a strong liking for 2/3 starters, which is more than I can say for Gen V.

Also, This is kind of a bad gauge, because I do not like almost 1/4 of Gen V pokemon, but when I do like a pokemon, it's the whole evolutionary line. I felt a lot of the pokemon in Gen V had unnecessary 2nd forms, but I still liked them aesthetically. IDK

Nop. I've only ever liked Charmander and Cyndaquil. The other four do nothing for me. The water starters I'm fine with and the grass starters I've always loved, except for Chikorita.

I agree. The base idea was good though., but somehow, gen II starters completely missed their last evo.

I mean look at Meganium, for example: the second stage was so much better than him.

Starters by gen:

IV > III > I > II > V

Gen 4 is the worst gen of starters with gen 2 not too far behind.

For the first time I understand what the hell was going on with Chikorita's neck. It's a much lamer version on Bulbasaur's seed.

Bayleef is still legit though. I picked Chickorita on my first playthrough simply off the strength of Bulbasaur, despite liking Totodile more. Bayleef really got my hopes up, but I think I started the game over once it turned into Meganium. Not a terrible pokemon, but not starter-worthy.

Charizard and Blastoise are cool but Venusaur is ugly.
Meganium fucking sucks. Actually not that big a fan of Chikorita's whole line.
Treeko line is decent, Mudkip line is weird as hell but worth it, and Combuskin is a cock 'n' balls.
Torterra's awesome, Empoleon's awesome, Infernape's awesome, but all of their prevos are lacking. Piplup's cute, I guess.
Snivy, Oshawott and Tepig are magnificent solely for the Metal Gear Solid references. Oshawott's entire line is genuinely good (I can forgive Samurott because he's awesome), Snivy's line is decent, and Tepig... like the concept, but not quite the execution.

3- Combusken is ugly and sceptile is disappointing but not bad. Everything else is great.

1- everything is good except venusaur and blastoise who become fat, overgrown and ugly.

5- Tepig is cute but its other forms ruin it. I like everything else.

2- just a boring gen. Chikorita and its entire line is boring. Totodile starts cute then becomes a trainwreck. Cyndaquil starts good with quilava being bad ass but typhlosion is dissapointing.

4- chimchars line was ugly, uninspired and reductive. Turtwigs line was boring and predictable. Piplup is cute turns ugly and once again a predictable final evo.
