Deadspin: (Notre Dame football player) Manti Te’o’s Dead Girlfriend is a hoax

The whole coma thing is hilarious. Yeah, I'm sure doctor's say "our modern medicine just can't help her, can she call anyone with the power of LOVE?" It's sad that even though this is a massive lie, as long as he plays this "I WAS TRICKED" card, people will still support him despite the evidence.

This fake girlfriend thing is making many to especulate that Manti might be gay.

Check out the tweets:

Everybody thinks that could be a possibility. From Towleroad's "Gay Rumor Mill Ramping Up Over Manti Te'O 'Dead Girlfriend' Hoax" article:

"...Not since Troy Aikman have I been bombarded on email, text, Twitter and phone calls about the sexual orientation of any athlete the way I was today about Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o," writes Cyd Zeigler Jr at OutSports.

And wouldn't have to have been a "big cover up," like Towleroad describes. It could have been a little thing that got out of hand.

There is no conclusion to this story where Te'o comes out looking like an honest, truthful guy. That's why its so fucking bizarre that the athletic department backed him like he did. He played up the dead girlfriend at the Heisman ceremony and before the Alabama game. At which point, according to Te'os timeline (which even that is full of shit and has holes in it) both him AND Notre Dame knew it was a hoax. How does this not make the university looking like lying scumbags too?

To see people still give this guy the benefit of a doubt is pretty disappointing (not on this board so much as in the media and real life). He benefited a great deal from the publicity he received and so did the university, how ever this really started out is irrelevant. Maybe it was a hoax in the beginning or a cover for his sexuality. It doesn't fucking matter how it started, at some point he was making up the narrative has he went along and was riding the lie all the way to the end. Does anyone really doubt he wouldn't still be talking his dead gf and how it motivates him to play hard if he hadnt got caught? He would have been playing it up on draft day without an ounce of shame. This kid deserves zero sympathy.

does anyone expect him to talk? after he scrapped the ESPN one yesterday, i seriously doubt it. if he does, it will probably be a softball interview that doesn't give much.

as time goes on, he looks less and less innocent. Truth doesn't need time...

He will talk before the NFL draft for sure. Likely before the NFL combine, because if he doesnt thats the only question he'll be asked by teams and the media.

Bingo. And now he's lying about when he "found out she was fake" because he did interviews after that supposed date where he was still pretending she existed. The kid is nothing but a liar and piss poor at getting his own lies straight. His parents are lying to protect their money train and the ND athletic director is lying to try and not look like friggen scum bags, which, as well all know too well these days, colleges care more about their football program than they do people.

Another thing I have hard time believing, he can go into extended detail about this story of her in the hospital, but when asked about where they met he says "“We met just, ummmm, just she knew my cousin, “And kind of saw me there so. Just kind of regular. " or that he isn't sure what she majored in? "TE'O: Her major was in English and something. I'll double check."

This article does a good job of breaking down why he's full of shit and why ND's press conference looks idiotic.

I was surprised to read that as well. Granted I was probably a bit young at the time to really hear or care about anything like that, but I don't remember hearing anything about it when he played.

Nah, that rumor about Aikman was as well-known as the Rod Stewart stomach pump story and the Richard Gere hamster story back in the day. You somehow missed it, but it was ALL OVER the place.

I'm surprised people even give this hoax theory a second of thought. His lies just don't make any sense. What does make sense is he is:

1) a pathological liar
2) gay
3) suffering from some disorder like MBP
4) all of the above

What I am curious about is how far he will slip in the NFL draft because of this. What team is going to want a nutjob in their lockerroom?

ESPN is saying there were multiple people behind the hoax and that Manti likely never knew. Now it just seems that he used his supposed girlfriend to gain publicity and lied about the extent of their relationship after he actually thought she died which is pretty terrible in and of itself.

This is the part that gets me. If he is lying about the hospital stuff, why is he so detailed, but when it comes to lying about their history and whether they ever met, he gets all vague? If he's such a pathological and skilled liar, why doesn't he have detailed, elaborate lies for those common questions?

I'm not believing anything originating from ESPN on this story.

Pretty much. 2 is best for his public image, 1 is probably best for his career. Sadly.

Unless he's the most sheltered manchild in the history of existence, there's no way he wasn't in on this.

They had multiple people(the original early december twitter people I think) on the show saying that they knew Ronaiah was behind the hoax and that he had pulled it on other people before with the exact same pictures and impersonated a female voice on the phone. It's not just ESPN saying it. It still doesn't change the fact that he created a web of lies as to the extent of the relationship and likely used it for publicity even if he thought it was real.

Or, even if he thought the girlfriend was real, he didn't actually care that much about her and just wanted to use her to gain publicity and attention. He definitely lied about the extent of the relationship so it's a lot easier to believe he didn't have as much contact with this person as he says he did.

Yeah, that alternative might actually even be worse in the long run.

Was Teo'o at all in the national spotlight prior to his big game after her "supposed" death?

Yeah. He was the star player for ND. Almost went pro last year. Once Notre Dame became good though, the hype on him increased x100.

If that's true and not just more people making shit up, that definitely changes things. In that case it has to have at least started out as a hoax.

Web of lies? More like a few small lies to cover up the fact that their relationship was online-only, out of embarrassment. As to whether he knowingly used it for publicity, a guy who can buy a hoax like that hook, line, and sinker probably isn't cunning enough to decide to spin the whole thing for his own gain.

He lied about it even after he supposedly found out it wasn't true. Without anyone even asking about it he brought it up while answering a question before the Heisman Ceremony. He almost certainly lied about how much he cared about her too because if he actually loved her as much as he said he would go visit her at some point instead of just lying and saying he did. Even if the other person kept making excuses you'd think a surprise visit at some point while they are dying of cancer would be something someone in love with someone would do. Whether a web of lies or small lies it looks like he at least somewhat tried to use it for personal gain. All of this is speculation though but as more and more comes out we will know the truth soon enough.

Will we? He's either a pathological liar of some sort or gay. I don't really think those two options will lend to some sort of true statement of fact anytime in the near future.

Did you see ESPN, they interviewed a friend of Tuiasosospo who claimed he called her crying about how he did something to T'eo and it went to far. She says it was him and his two cousins, one male one female and that ALL of them impersonated a female voice. It was Tuiasosopo who called T'eo to tell him it was all a lie. She claims they said T'eo did not have involvement. ESPN also interviewed that guy on twitter that said he knew this fake character from before, one of his cousins was duped by Tuiasosospo with the same character a few years before this, that is why he was tweeting about it.

So it seems like T'eo may not be involved but he is a huge liar and is a total dope for falling for this. Or now Tuiasosospo is covering for T'eo. But I am leaning toward the former.

Hold on! I didn't know this part of the story.

If you enjoy reading fiction, his story gets better.
According to Te'o, Kekua graduated from Stanford in 2011 (though he was sketchy on this) and later that year, when her father passed away, she took over his position with Clark's Construction Co. in California. Yet, she still found time to teach “at elementary schools (plural). She flew to New Zealand to just work with kids. That's what she loved to do, work with children.”

He was really just making things up on the fly huh? Wow I want Manti to go down now.

Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, the man who has been publicly identified as being behind the Manti Te'o girlfriend hoax, called a church friend in early December crying and admitted to duping the Heisman finalist, the friend told Outside the Lines Thursday.

...
In the interview, she did allow for her voice to be recorded.....

She says Tuiasosopo gave her the tearful confession and account of how he played, what he said was at first a game, on the unsuspecting Te'o. And, she says, he told her that it wasn't the first time he had done it.

"He (Ronaiah) told me that Manti was not involved at all, he was a victim. ... The girlfriend was a lie, the accident was a lie, the leukemia was a lie," said the woman. "He was crying, he was literally crying, he's like 'I know, I know what I have to do.'

"It's not only Manti, but he was telling me that it's a lot of other people they had done this to."

I still don't get the point of the hoax. You're not getting money, favors, fame or anything. It doesn't match up to the huge time and effort investment.

Unless payments turn up, I'm not buying it.

National? Not really. He was known as a good linebacker, but wasn't star potential.

This is wrong. He was star potential. He was coming into his last season as one of the best linebackers in the country. People who followed college football knew him.

The bigotry in this thread is making me sick. Who's to say that a guy cannot love a girl who doesn't exist?

And that love cannot be real?

This is the part that gets me. If he is lying about the hospital stuff, why is he so detailed, but when it comes to lying about their history and whether they ever met, he gets all vague? If he's such a pathological and skilled liar, why doesn't he have detailed, elaborate lies for those common questions?

I don't think the hospital stuff is detailed at all. It's just about her going there for the car accident and then discovering she had leukemia which eventually killed her. In between it's all vagueness about her writing letters, flatlining.....twice, waking up just to say, "I love you." Oh yeah, and somewhere in there is her frontal lobe was damaged enough that her memory was bad....or something. The rest is all messages or conversations that he supposedly had with her brother. The timeline is just a murky mess with zero details if you ask me.

Even in the best case scenario that he had no involvement in the hoax, he still lied multiple times to many media outlets about how they met and their in-person interactions. And then many times afterward during the Heisman ceremony and the lead up to the National Championship when they were still doing sob stories on him and he already knew the whole thing was a sham.

I still have a terribly hard time believing that someone was so dedicated to this hoax that they actually spent 8+ hours on the phone with him EVERY NIGHT. Where are the phone records?

So when RT called him to tell him it was a lie, I guess Te'o didn't believe him and asked "Kekua" back out. And he also continued to say she was dead.

So when did Te'O "really" learn about this truth? Because I fail to believe that he'd fly from Indiana to Hawaii while his dying girlfriend (that he loves ) is in California and he never thought to stop by and see her.

This was during the summer break, so what's the problem? Why couldn't he stop by and hold her hand instead of talking to a literal mouth breather?
