ESPN is saying that Tuiasopoaopaasdf admitted to a friend that he was hoaxing Te'o the whole time.
The only real difference this makes is that if true, it means Te'o wasn't lying about being hoaxed, only about everything else he ever said ever.

I believe he was part of the hoax but assuming he wasn't, we still know that:
a) he lied about the nature of his relationship to his friends, family, fans, and the media
b) he bolstered his 'inspira-cred' by using her death as a source of publicity even after finding out that it wasn't true/she never existed
c) he never met her
d) he never ventured to see her before/after her death
e) he claims to spend every night on the phone with her and couldn't be bothered to take the extra step to see his purported 'potential wife' (according to his parents)

He deserves the sociopath title for the incredible lies he made up. Saying he listened to her while she was in a coma for 8 hours a day and talked to the hospital staff? Ya - but everyone in the media just finished a 2012 football season in which they glorified Manti Te'o for his courage - without the whole story being brought to light. And, you have to admit, this halo definitely contributed to the hype surrounding Notre Dame all throughout the 2012 season.
So - it's hard to be sympathetic right now....

I don't buy any of that or anything ESPN has to add to this debate for that matter. The linebacker position may not require a degree in molecular physics but to play as well as he does at a school with ND's tradition I doubt that he's anywhere near dumb enough to not have understood what he was doing and what was going on well before December.
I could accept that initially he was duped but at some point he realized what was going on and decided it was the perfect vehicle to carry him to national fame. And ESPN is looking more and more as this story plays out to be in as deep as the school is in this mess.

Wow. I haven't been keeping up with this at all, but it's crazy. Either he's an (1) unintelligent sociopath or (2) really gullible. Honestly, he's Manti Te'o - he could probably get a lot of girls...even a lot of dying ones, if he actually was a sociopath looking to make a good story.
I choose #2 - I'm thinking that he's just extremely gullible and too afraid (stupid) to admit it, so he doubled down on the stupidity to try to cover it up and make it sound real. If other people around this situation that care about him (his parents) have lied as well, I'm guessing they did it as a favor or to try to protect him somehow. They ended up just adding to the mess though. What a mess it is.
As most people know, you don't have to be brilliant to play football decently and get drafted. It would have been okay to just tell the truth (or just not tell more lies). Now he has to deal with being called a sociopath instead of just an idiot...Maybe he prefers it that way, I dunno.
Oh well, I'm sure some team will draft him anyway since his character issues aren't criminal, as far as I know.
