The guy running the hoax: if teo is in on it, he can easily debunk teo's innocence.
The guy running the hoax would end up in court if he came out and said that.

oh, a joke characterSo board lawyers if manti wishes can he sue the shit out of deadspin? It's obvious now to everyone that they did a hatchet job......what are his options?
You can't be serious...
Luckily for Manti, defamation suits by famous individuals have a significantly lower threshold relative to suits by members of the general public. Should be a shoo in, no problemo, slam dunk for the Heartbreaker from Honolulu. So board lawyers if manti wishes can he sue the shit out of deadspin? Mighty Manti bout to make bank, between the suit and the fact that he'll probably be drafted one overall after overcoming all this adversity.Luckily for Manti, defamation suits by famous individuals have a significantly lower threshold relative to suits by members of the general public. No, man. Te'o totally has this suit in the bag. Totally easy for public figures to win defamation suits, that's why it happens all day, every day. That's why all of those celebrity gossip rags have been put out of business.No. Truth is a defense to libel plus he's a public figureso he'd have to show actual malice or reckless disregard for the truth, which he would not be able to do. And of course he'd never want to have to publicly explain his embellishments and why he continued the charade after he knew it was a hoax.
How can they get it wrong when THEY did the interview?

He's not getting away with anything, all we're witnessing right now is how much juice ND has as an institution in the USA. If Te'o had been unfortunate enough to have attended USC he would be getting ripped to shreds right now instead of having the media attempt to help him rewrite history and restore his credibility. From the beginning this has been about protecting the school's reputation and not Te'o's.It's amazing how much you can get away with if people think you're stupid.

Maybe because Deadspin told him or some people close to him that they were going to run the story on a particular day?
Didn't RT send the direct message 2 hours before the Deadspin story broke on their site? You don't think that was just by luck do you?

that's how it was originally, now the article says "Te'o said it did not affect his play in the game, where Notre Dame lost to Alabama 42-14."I swear espn reported last night teo said it affected his play vs. Alabama. Espn has now changed that or am I crazy
Okay, also confused here. Isn't @lennykay a parody account by that time? "Her" Twitter account was changed to something else back in September. Unless I don't understand Twitter.supposedly the dms from RT to Teo

He granted ESPN an interview. I am sure they set up parameters. Whether it was Schaap or any other interview personality they have, they weren't going to get away with just grilling the dude. He interviewed him for 2.5 hours with an attorney present. And Schaap still led of his report by saying there are inconsistencies and that its up to the viewers to decide. He didn't claim I BELIEVE MANTI 100%
He repeatedly stresses that Manti was very believable. He is full of shit and sold his journalistic integrity in this case for access. I expected better from him

How exactly can a story about the hoaxers being at his hotel be a transcription error? And people are still making those that see this as a cover-up into crazy conspiracy theorists? The parody account was created on 1/16, but I don't think any one knows the exact time. I think it is safe to assume it was AFTER the Deadspin story posted, which was at 4:10 PM EST. I don't know how Twitter time stamps their DMs, but if those are time stamped with EST, then these were sent prior to Deadspin's story. Which would mean it had to be from someone involved in the hoax, most likely Tuiasosopo.
ETA: ESPN has now made note of the correction they made to the article about the hoax affecting Te'o's play. They are chalking it up to a transcription error. Funnily enough, the Sportscenter app still has the original version of the story.

Due to a transcription error, how Manti Te'o felt he played in the BCS title game was misreprsented in an earlier version of this story. Te'o said he was not affected by the story surrounding a girlfriend hoax during the game.

Ah, I thought that the entire account had been removed but I see now that it was just changed to reflect the difference. No, the error was in whether or not it affected his play.
or maybe...he actually thinks Manti came across as believable? Maybe he's a good liar (would explain a lot) but that doesn't mean that Schaap sold out. Everyone wants so bad for this to be what they want it to be that you guys are willing to paint the picture as much ND and Teo's people are.
I swear espn reported last night teo said it affected his play vs. Alabama. Espn has now changed that or am I crazy
If embarrassment somehow explains away all the incredible inconsistencies in not just Te'o's original story but in how the story has been reported over the last few days then I think you can apply the same reasoning of investment to youself. The conspiracy theories cooked up in this thread are fun to read. People get so invested in these stories they can't just accept that their initial assumptions were wrong.
The dude has been embarrassed, and as soon as you realize that his explanation makes sense. Most people would lie a little to save some face.
He repeatedly stresses that Manti was very believable. He is full of shit and sold his journalistic integrity in this case for access. I expected better from him
And what is wrong with stating what he felt? You think they fed him the lines "believable"?
You sound like you made your mind up already anybody who even thinks he might be believable or makes a convincing case, and in this instance Schaap, sold their integrity.
They asked him of his opinion and Schaap answered. That is not considered selling out. Schaap also mentioned in the same report that its up to the audience to decide if they believe him or not.
As for one of the big questions -- why didn't he at least Skype -- he says he tried to speak with Lennay through Skype or FaceTime several times, but the person on the other end was in a "black box" and couldn't be seen.
