You'll miss out on a lot of good games if you just go by how they look on Giant Bomb videos.
I miss a lot of games simply due to the nature of not having enough time, money, or interest in everything that is out there, as well. I've spent enough time with the things that I like to have a reasonably good idea of what is and isn't going to appeal to me in a significant capacity. Of course, that is not without exceptions, but in the case of Castlevania and Assassin's Creed, I feel quite confident in my decisions to avoid them for my personal library.

edit: Also, what giant_frying_pan said.

Using quicklooks to decide what series to care about is something people do but I am not sure it is something one should be proud of.

But I'll point out that doing so as a blanket standard means you can be pretty sure Shadow of the Colossus is broken and you just fall off Colossi randomly, among other things.

There is a lot to be said for trying something yourself, even if you didn't like the previous iterations. Things change, game design changes, I hated Assassin's Creed 1 and didn't care for AC3 but man did I love AC2.

Despite the Quick Look's not being the most positive in the world, I've picked up games like Wet and Splatterhouse based purely on the fact I thought I'd enjoy the games after seeing the Quick Look.

Fortunately, I tend to consume media surrounding games from more than a singular location or instance of video. : P
My game tastes do not easily or accurately translate to any member of the staff, so I am never able to take a recommendation or the opposite at face value. However, I do enjoy the exposure to some titles that I would have never known about otherwise from their quick looks.

edit: Besides, it all worked out for me with Assassin's Creed not being to my liking, since I traded it in and bought Deadly Premonition (which is in my top 3 favorite games this gen).

Yeah, I picked up Monster Hunter Tri after watching their not so enthusiastic Quick Look and had a great time with it.

So, a year late, I played through Saints Row The Third this weekend. And, to my astonishment, I really enjoyed it. The main voice actress, Laura Bailey, is really good. There was a toughness to her, and she could say motherfucker with ease, and sound natural with every ridiculous line delivered. The writing, for the most part, was clever. The musical choices, from "Power" to the ending climax of "I Need a Hero", which, is it supposed to be an allusion to Short Circuit 2's finale, are great; the part early in the game where they sing that song in the car is great. I'm shocked, shocked that this game had such care to it. And, while I don't hold much attachment to some of the stuff they are lampooning in the game, such as wrestling, I can appreciate its care. I cannot believe this game is as fun as it was. I wonder if the sexism of the game would have affected me differently if I played as a male character, but as a female, it all seemed so subversive (I didn't dress my character in the nude or as a tart). As someone who doesn't like random wackiness (think the opposite of Patrick's "What is going on?!" exuberant exclamations) and gets quickly turned off by gross sexism/violence/misogyny, I find it hard to reconcile my pleasure playing through this game. There is something... heartwarming... about it all. I don't get it.

Between playing through this and replaying Bully in the last week, I've had some good open world fun.

I feel what makes Saints Row 3 so good is that it revels in its wackiness, and doesn't try to restrict the player based on any sense of "realism". Unlike other open world games that go out their way to limit the player, this game lets us just go anywhere and do anything from the get go. And it just continues to ramp up with all the silliness without being too overbearing and sacrificing on the gameplay. Finally, it's just fun. The weapons are fun, the missions are mostly fun, and by the game of the game, you can even become practically invulnerable by the end of the game without using cheats!

It realizes it's a game, and does not try to become anything more than that.

GB Quick Looks tend to be misleading most of the time since they don't spend enough time with some of the games so there is too much guess work involved on their part.

It was a terrible showing, Vinny already apologized on Twitter. ;)

The part they showed is actually very trivial and short - if you know the controls and what moves are available to you. Vinny forgot how to do the dash, which was introduced one or two levels earlier in the game, and he forgot how to grapple things. Unfortunately, the chat told him to hold RT which made everything even worse because you're only supposed to tap RT. That's the reason he let go of the statue every single time. Yeah, it was pretty infuriating to watch.

Hopefully he's prepared if he decides to play it again next week. I'd suggest to start over. Last time he played it was almost two years ago, he should at least play by himself for a while before doing another live show with the game. For sure he's forgotten a lot and he's bound to get stuck again if he decides to continue where he left of. On top, the combat looks unnecessarily boring and takes way too long when you're not utilizing all these awesome moves that you bought (use the "chainsaw", Vinny! And less areal attacks... those do hardly any damage and are only there for crowd control).

The next sub-chapter is very puzzle/coop-with-Zobek-heavy. And you need to find handles for some contraption. I predict frustration.

if he starts over, he should do it off the show. the first 2 chapters aka extended tutorial sections are a bore and probably not a good part to show or play through. i can imagine the snickering from the rest of them already. i hope Vinny looks up a guide to refresh himself and continue from there.

Hey they are loving monday again, but only because it's not actually monday.

Anyway, let me help the crew out here regarding their TNT problem. It's not working. Do anything else and it will be way more entertaining. Just look at the Unprofessional Friday reaction.

TNT has the same problem as Happy Hour did: It works when you have the right content for it, but it's impossible to have the right content week in and week out. So a lot of weeks it feels very forced.

It might still have value as a monthly feature or something, though.

I think the idea for Too Human co-op this week sounds super awesome.

That sandwich Drew prepares seems pretty awesome, except for the part where he heats it up after already applying the mayo. That part seems weird, but maybe it's light on the mayo and heavy on the sriracha?

The best Giant Bomb stuff is usually always them playing older games, Jeff and Patrick playing Atari and Saturn games where British Man Extraordinaire Garry Whitta joined in

The SNES marathons, Brad and Jeff play a bunch of Mortal Kombat games, where..Ameba? song was the highlight. Jeff and Alex playing a bunch of older Tony Hawk games.

The 3DO episode, the one episode where they played that very first Need For Speed game and the guy in the game had too much swag and Jeff could not handle it

I kinda hope that is what Unproffesional Fridays will become, since TNT seem to just be your regular game of the week

I would buy one, M3z_! Yeah, I don't know how well mayo heats up, but it's probably much more to do with convenience than it being an actual preference.

I really hope unprofessional fridays becomes a staple for them.

Pisses me off that Drew can eat a fucking Frito breaded chicken sandwich for lunch and look like a Norse god and I eat nothing but cottage cheese and fruit all day and I'm a blob.

Ha scoops it only gets crazier

I'll be really interested to hear his impressions of the ending when stacked up against 999. I think the consensus is that it's about as good 999 but in trying to illicit the same reaction in the player a second time, is more convoluted and than it might need to be.

They should make it dueling co-op. Two teams, see how can get furthest in an hour and half. Losers have to play RE6 co-op on next TNT.
That's a cool idea, but once Jeff learns that racing is the latest Youtube/Twitch fad to cross-promote various gamer channels, he'll put his foot down and won't allow it.

Props to Jeff for trying to talk and play during the 10000000 QL. I can't imagine trying to talk and play that game, I feel dumb enough when I play it as is.

That is true, but it's a special case. They can play among themselves and it will involve a lot of talking about the crazyness around this game. Probably also about how shit it is, so it should be fun.

Drew needs a make a video on how to properly prepare this sandwich. Cooking with Drew. Make it premium content.

Remember when they were still at Whiskey and they kept mentioning launching new sites. Really wish they could have done a cooking one

Glad you enjoyed it, it is awesome. Don't bother with the DLC though. It's bad, like retroactively may make you like the game less kind of bad.
