The mean age of the 11 members of a football team is 22 years.
a) When one member of the football team was sent off, the mean age of the rest of the team was 21 years. How old was the player who was sent off?
b) The modal age of the 11 players is 17 and only the 3 youngest players are aged 17. The median age of the 11 players is 20. What is the maximum possible age of one of the players?
A)
Code:
22 x 11 = 242
21 x 10 = 210
242-210 = 32
B) The answer is said to be 41, but I'd like to see a formula for working this out. This is how I saw it. I know the total age of these 11 players is 242 years old.
17. 17. 17. xx. xx. 20.xx.xx.xx.xx.32
That in itself equates to 103, leaving you with 139 left to come from the remaining six players whose age you've yet to calculate. The sequence is allegedly the following:
17.17.17.18.18.20.20.21.21.32.41
But if the goal is to get to 242, by not repeating another modal number (17), couldn't you get a different sequence of numbers? e.g.
17.17.17.18.19.20.21.22.25.32.34?
