Giant Bomb Thread The Third: #TeamBrad

Ugh, why did I look at those comments. And why do some people get so defensive at the notion of making the industry slightly more welcoming to women?

I never understand what the fuck these people are doing/not doing in their daily life. I would never be able to summon the energy to reply to a news article on ANY site. Ever.

Seriously, look at this shit. It's an internet asshole convention of gamefaqian proportions.

Giant Bomb is my number one stop for extremist feminist propaganda.

Hey cool, more Kotaku-level clickbait bullshit from Klepek.

WE.GET.IT!!!! Bad taste. Female form bad. Video game marketing evil.
I'm really getting tired of this progressive bull-shit.

What's up with women, it's an over the top zombie game. If they showed a mutililated zombie attacked penis statue I wouldn't be offended and feel like they were attacking men. Sheez, get a grip and quit thinking everything is an attack on your sex.

Klepek has a distorted world view and allows it to affect his, er, news articles.

Hey. This is like Watergate.
But is Patrick Woodward or Bernstein?

If this was a male torso there would be no debate AT ALL. Everyone just fuckin SHHHHHHHHHHHHUUUUTTT UUUUUUUuuuUUUUUPPPPP! God damn.

If you hate it so much, Patrick, why are you promoting the shit out of it. Let it die. Stop being so sensationalist.

And meanwhile the GB set unashamedly displays a disembodied female leg lamp... Just sayin'.

Reading those comments make me feel bad about enjoying GB's content, because if THOSE people like it and I like it, what does that say about me?

I mean, really? Complaining that it's women and that Patrick should have done men instead, complaining that nobody shares the opinion that it's just a statue?

Ugh.

I try to take solace in what Bedlam said...

Please don't mistake "community" with "news section commenters". Those are rarely the same people, not on GB and not on other sites. Sure, there are posts by active community members but mostly it's people who solely signed up to rage on certain articles or QLs.
...I just hope it's true.

Damn poeple get made at the most pettist things on the internet. patrick worte ana ticle, ugggggggggggggggggh why would he do that.

the patrick hate gets out of control alot

comments sections are so bad. i hate that patrick can go to the effort to get eight voices to write thoughtful pieces on a recent thing that happened only for it to be undermined on the very same page by people complaining about feminist propaganda etc. and of course now the shit comments become the story as much as the actual piece because they're given nearly equal privilege. such a hard balance to get right on a community orientated site like giant bomb of course, it'd sure be nice if the gaming community wouldn't be so awful on these things.

Agree, and regardless of the content of the quotes provided in the article, I respect any outlet's attempt to include some female voice in discussion about the video game industry. I listen to / watch GB, Idle Thumbs, Retronauts and get all of what, maybe one female opinion ever combined? I may not always agree with them, but it's a necessary effort Patrick's making.

A really progressive move would be to actually obtain female opinion on non-gender related stories, but considering barely an I Love Mondays goes by without a comment about Sara Lima's looks, I can't imagine women are lining up for job opps.

The Giant Bomb community, once again proving that the best place to talk about Giant Bomb is on GAF.

I have to agree with you. This is me right now reading the comments.

To be fair, Patrick's opinions about gender issues sometimes feels kind of hyperbolic or superficial to me (complains about the Cyberpunk 2077 trailer ).

Then again, the article here is less about Patrick's thoughts and more about 8 professionals in the industry.

LOL, amazing, gg Scoops

The Giant Bomb community, once again proving that the best place to talk about Giant Bomb is on GAF, or SomethingAwful, or Twitter, or the actual Giant Bomb forums occasionally too

Fixed. Let's not get high-and-mighty, this thread is far from perfect, and the GB forums have come up with some amazing stuff. Where do you think all those photoshops came from?

This is an issue with the comments sections.

...with comments sections everywhere. Cesspits, all of them. Unmoderated ones, anyway.

Ugh, why did I look at those comments. And why do some people get so defensive at the notion of making the industry slightly more welcoming to women?
People are scared someone's going to take all the titties away.

I'm kinda loving the irony of this:

Yeah, I thought that picture was slightly out of place when reading the article.

People use informal pictures for twitter all the time, doesn't mean they want it attached to a quote covering a fairly serious topic.

Seriously.

Then they should just contact Patrick and not post about it on twitter like he wouldn't change it if asked.

I have seen similarly dumb stuff in the forums and chat too, they had a thread on the GB forums before the story even ran with people complaining. I haven't had many good experiences interacting with the GB-only side of things, far too often in live chats have I tried to voice an issue with the stream just to be shouted down by a bunch of people (including mods) saying "The problems on you end, just deal with it." I can't speak to SA, I don't visit there often.

Of course that isn't to say we don't have our complaining moments here on GAF, but for the most part the regulars in this thread are pretty level-headed.

As per usual, the irrational focus on sex(ism) and ignoring violence in Americaland. How dare this mutilated torso have boobs!

I don't like Patrick's articles because they seem to be taking the place of actual content the site used to or needs to have. Less reading, more videos of stupid shit please. What happened to the idea of 'fun' over there?

Hopefully CODBLOPS3 will have female soldiers running around in bikinis and thongs so we can mow them down with a stationary machinegun or predator missile. Many tears will be shed about what female industry professionals think of how there are perfectly shaped breasts in the gibs flying about.

I don't really get the use of white knight in this context.

If she uses the photo to represent herself on Twitter it's kinda difficult to see where she's coming from on this complaint.
Dude, come on, think for a second.

If someone from another outlet requested a quote for a serious topic from Patrick, think he'd want them to use an 8-bit version of him? Think Ryan would want MODOK? (actually, scrap that, he probably would) Or Vinny as Persona Vinny?

I guess it's weird in the article's context, but maybe just ask to exchange the picture. Wonder why patrick had not thought of that in the first place.
edit: she explains it on twitter ... not too hard to get.

This. Yeah it wasnt a great picture to use in the article but im not sure how you can be angry when its your avatar on a thing like Twitter.

Patrick could have asked if she was okay with that picture (in the context of the article), Elizabeth (doubt her last name is her real last name, so we'll go with that) should have just sent Patrick an email.

Patrick going into the comment section is such a bad idea.

Patrick should have asked if she was okay with that picture, Elizabeth (doubt her last name is her real last name, so we'll go with that) should have just sent a message to Pattrick, not twitter it.

Unfortunately, I suspect she (and the others) are likely being harassed on Twitter, so that's her way of publicly announcing that she'd rather have been represented with a different picture.

Right, but that's the whole point of this debate -- Patrick isn't responsible for providing some sort of protection for her image. She's responsible. Instead of taking to Twitter to complain, provide a more professional photo and regret the dichotomy between your public image on Twitter and your opinion on this matter.

Or he could just ask each person for every piece of content he needs from them and they will provide the appropriate ones. That doesn't seem like a big deal for either party, and it doesn't seem like a big deal to fix it after the fact either.

I find articles like that worse than the torso preorder item. It's just so weird. Like, hey here's this figurine with boobs, and whoa you've got tits DO YOU WANT TO COMMENT ON THE TIT STATUE WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THESE BLOODY BOOBS CAUSE YOU GOT BOOBS AND YOURE A WOMAN SO LIKE WHAT DO YOU THINK????

I'm a guy, if they were selling a bloody torso of a guy I would find it gross. I dunno. Video game journalists continue to stumble all over themselves when anything related to women is involved.

unrelated: I love how the top image on the site cosplay lady writes for is the THQ logo all sliced up with bloodstains in the background

really poignant imagery there

I appreciate that Patrick does make an attempt to get a female perspective on things like this, but I think it comes off a little heavy handed at times. I think the smarter thing for him to do if he wants there to be a greater female voice in the industry is not just to go to them for opinions on issues related to sexism, but just for all news. Get the female perspective on everything going on in the industry and not just certain things here and there.
