I think it's a beautiful homage to the Star Trek of the past and it proves that he can stay true to the essence of the original score. Personally, I'd love to a Episode 7 score that remixes the classic SW themes like that.

I seriously doubt that this is true. The 'standard' contract is usually two films (as Nolan had with WB on the Batman films) and Abrams is (was?) a massive player on the Paramount lot so I don't imagine this is true.

Abrams gonna be rolling in the money. Not to mention producing Mission Impossible and all the TV show stuff.

Paramount is probably really fucking pissed about this, as Busty pointed out. Not only is every junket/article/interview going to end up being a timely reminder that there's a new Star Wars movie coming out, but the guy who is pretty much in charge of their giant tentpole series just made huge news signing a contract with a rival company to make THE giant tentpole series.

With Disney wanting to release a new Star Wars movie every 2-3 years I could see this being a one time thing for Abrams. He just sets the tone / establishes the world for the sequel trilogy and after that you can have of one of GAF's beloved better 'storyteller directors' take over.

I don't think that's true, directors only ever sign on for one movie at a time with maybe the option for a second. Cast is what gets locked in for 3-picture deals like that.
 
Honestly, he can emulate Lucas stylistically.

He's got a good relationship to a composer who can capably emulate John Williams stylistically.

The question is whether this movie's going to have the "heart" of the original movies. He can emulate to the nth degree, but that doesn't mean it will feel right.

I always feel like JJ's films - when they try to get emotional - feel contrived or manipulative.

He needs to overcome that; I think a good script can. Abrams has worked with shit writers pretty much his entire career. The new guy's either going to make or break this.

I think the entirety of Super 8 serves to prove your point there perfectly.

HOWEVER

I think the opening of Star Trek proves that he CAN evoke honest emotion, and do it pretty efficiently, too.
 
Yea I'm becoming more hyped for this, he singlehandedly made Mission Impossible and Star Trek revelent again IMO. Its SWs turn now.

I think it was the cast who signed for 3 films, I'm still not sure if he did.

Yup. Again as I said before the thing that gives me pause about this story is basically how much of fuck you this is from Abrams to Paramount.

And bare in mind that the Star Trek sequel has still to be released and will presumably hit the cinemas when Abrams is in full on pre production on the this new Star Wars films.

It would be the equivalent of Bryan Singer starting work on Superman returns BEFORE the X-Men sequel came out in cinemas.

He works with shitty writers by choice, which is reason enough to distrust his instincts. I can't wait to hear that the script will be rewritten by one of his buddies, or otherwise butchered on the set.

Star Wars was never irrelevant, even after the prequels. That's how fucking massive this franchise is. And Brad Bird made MI relevant again, not Abrams.
 
I think it would be intriguing if they gave Affleck a spin off movie to direct (as theyve been hinting they want to do with other directors). Give him SW:Underground/1313 and see what he can do with a grittier SW universe.

To be fair, I did like his End Credits song but that was pretty weighted by the fact that it did incorporate the theme from the 60s. I thought his main theme felt pretty generic to me and mostly forgettable. I just didn't dig it at all. I really said in my head, "That's it? That's how you reintroduce me to Star Trek?" Star Trek was by and large did not incorporate any elements of the past Treks and honestly, I easily prefer some of the scores from the previous movies over the new Trek. So using Star Trek 09 as an example, I fear all we get at best is the intro Star Wars theme and then nothing else and it just sounds completely different and my fear of not fitting.

YUp. It usually three films with the option of a fourth. Unless you're some kind of twisted draconian factory owner signing people to multi year, multi picture deal for next to no cash like, oh I don't know.........., MARVEL/Disney.

to nitpick - there was pretty much a dead period between 85-91 where Star Wars was kinda gone from the public eye. There were Saturday Morning Cartoons and Ewok Movies, but otherwise, that 6 year stretch was the only time Star Wars was close to "unpopular."

Which is why I've always thought it was weird that it was branded a "Nerd." Thing. It's been around for 35 years, and there was a 6 year period where it wasn't a hugely popular, massive, moneymaking media empire. It's the definition of mainstream.

Lucasfilm probably leaked it. Or someone IN Lucasfilm. Or someone in either agency. The fact Hollywood Reporter and Variety had their stories up and ready to go within minutes of the Wrap hitting tells me they knew, and were pressed to post what they had thanks to Wrap breaking the seal.

So far as I know, Lucasfilm never officially "confirmed" Kinberg/Kasdan getting hired, either. Or if they did, it was quietly, and after all the trades had reported their hiring.

Ghost Protocol was very distinct from III when it came to use of the camera, but it was cut from the Bad Robot cloth, and wouldn't have existed in anything like it's final form if JJ hadn't made it's predecessor.

The prequels have turned it into a laughing stock. The series is more derided then praised these days.

With Abrams on board I think he'll make it cool again, a better term instead of revelent.

Yep. I have never felt any genuine emotion in his films. They're all soulless and flashy. Super 8, in particular, was one of the most laughably hammy films i've ever seen, with all its misguided tearjerking and jarring tonal shifts. He's a terrible director and one of the worst choices i could think of for capturing the spirit of the original trilogy.

All my excitement at the possibility of Star Wars returning to greatness has evaporated with this decision. He's such a safe, shitty choice.

I guess my point was more that Mission Impossible 2 was huge and 3 was a big disappointment, box office wise, where 4 has kind of revived it. If anything, 3 killed the franchise (though, really, it has much more to do with poor timing of the third one and really really spread out releases more than anything JJ did or didn't do).

Maybe. I just don't give a shit if it's cool or not; give me a good film, dammit!

And the OT is still revered, now moreso than ever thanks to the prequels. The original trilogy is still the gold standard for blockbusters, and certainly just about any movie franchise, today.

Meh, not too thrilled about Abrams. I really wanted Brad Bird to get the gig and I never really gave Affleck consideration (because I didn't think Disney would). With that said, now I'm disappointed they didn't go with Affleck, I love his work.
