Monolithsoft WiiU trailer - X (Takahashi x Tanaka x Sawano, Xenoblade x/multiplayer?)

What I think is funny is I remember reading something like they didn't expect Xenoblade to do so well and it was more of an experimental project. But people apparently loved it and now it looks like they're getting a sequel. I have mine but it's still factory sealed and never played. I will get around to it during the summer probably. =l

It did well?

Pros:

-Monster designs are detailed and interesting
-Lots of AA from the looks of cliff edges
-Sharper textures than what open world console games are producing
-Incredible draw distance that surpasses every current gen console game
-Gameplay looks addictive

Cons:

-Water texture is awful, so is the splashing water sprite
-AF is atrocious
-Environments are lacking polygonal complexity in particular areas that gives the world an inconsistent aesthetic (the ground specifically)
-Janky animation

Overall Impression: X looks better than any current gen console game I have seen. There is certainly room for improvements that will remedy the cons that I've pointed out given X is early in its development. From a technical standpoint, there is no doubt in my mind that X is above RDR, Skyrim, and Just Cause 2, however it just barely edges out Just Cause 2. If I had to guess where X is in its development, my bets would be in Alpha-Alpha. The gameplay is where it shines. This type of game looks like it would be right up my alley.

I'm not sure I would use "awful" and "atrocious" to describe anything in the trailer...that's being hyperbolic

I have no problem with the water texture but that lack of geometry complexity is what makes it look horrible. I have a hard time believing thatwill ship like that.

Well, all we know is that the game is still in development, and maybe will be released until 2014. So, there is quite a lot of time to fix things and improve others. This surely isn´t final game.

Judging from screens taken from the trailer, it literally looks like zero AF is used. The water is a flat texture using a fuzzy white splashing sprite. It would have been an impressive effect for the Wii, but I expect more from the Wii U.

Fortunately, that is one effect that is currently placeholder and will unquestionably be updated by X's release. As it stands, the quality of both effects are in my opinion awful and atrocious, which as I said before is fine because there is still room for a ton of improvement in those areas.

Is that a cave entrance down there? Maybe that's where this particular portion
of the trailer is taking place?

In my opinion, as long as games look great and above what's 360 is capable of then I'm happy and it should be able to receive down ports. I'll still have the next Xbox for exclusives and some third party ports. When it comes to Gamepad additions, they could win me over.

The second image may just be down to it being 7PM during a thunderstorm.

Yeah. To me, caves in a fantasy setting = dark places with overgrown, glowing, mutated mushrooms and assumed it was taking place in one. :P
Just making sure, but the locations we've seen in the trailer, it's just one area, right?

I'd cool it on the hyper-specific analysis of the graphics. This is likely pre-pre-alpha. A lot could change. At the very least, keep your hand off the panic button, y'know?

I feel weird for being probably the only person that felt a little let down when watching that scene. Don't get me wrong, flying away with a mech is pretty cool, but what I always loved the most about Xenoblade was that even when looking at screenshots I immediately got the urge to explore the world. In this scene, however, the ground looks pretty empty and boring. :S I hope that you'll still have a lot of interesting places to explore and that it won't end up in a step-into-a-mech-and-ride-to-the-next-big-monster procedure.

Really, my biggest wish for a Xenoblade successor was that they make exploration more relevant. The most annoying part of XB to me was that the game punished you for exploring its fields before you got certain quests. You found this giant boss monster? Well, if you defeat it now you'll have to wait an eternity for it to respawn once you got the quest to kill it. You've found the entrance to some ruins? Too bad you won't be able to enter it without some random NPC giving you the keys to it.

This is also why the big monsters shown in the trailer make feel skeptic. If you put too many huge monsters into the game, that special "holy fuck, what is this huge thing" feeling you get when you discover a boss won't be the same anymore.

However, they seem to emphasize that this is indeed a new IP and I guess they want it to be faster-paced and with more action, so I probably shouldn't look into it with my XB2 wishes.

Can't wait to get some actual details about it. I hope Nintendo won't keep it under wraps for too long. :S

i still have a hard time associating xenoblade with nintendo, xenoblade felt like a square game without big budget cgis. to me it just doesn't say like "nintendo".

...Xenoblade felt like a Monolith Soft game. Now they just happen to make games for Nintendo because Nintendo needed a good RPG studio.

You found this giant boss monster? Well, if you defeat it now you'll have to wait an eternity for it to respawn once you got the quest to kill it.

An eternity? More like 1 minute if that if you just save/reload in the area the monster appears in.

I wonder how this game will look post E3 when we have seen PS4 and next xbox games.

xenoblade looks incredible even if its 480p if thats what you are asking.

also why do graphics matter that much anyways? its the open world style gameplay that made xenoblade amazing not the graphics

I wouldn't expect anything. While the system can do AF and tessellated water just fine, both those things eat performance like candy - and that performance is quite possibly required elsewhere. To, you know, make shit bigger, or monsters more detailed, or make fancier armor and weapons. Things that are probably ultimately more important.

Aren't we over analyzing this a bit too much at this stage, especially seeing out much better Xenoblade turned out from Monodo(whatever it was called)?

Umm...yes they do lol.
There's weather/time conditions for certain monsters. You have to skip the clock until a day happens to have the same conditions.

IIRC most boss monsters drop quest-related items whether you have the quest or not. Similarly, I remember finding all sorts of Key items for future quests just by exploring the map.

LOL I just remembered the premonitions.

I very much disagree here. Take Gaur Plains, for instance:

From there, it's deceptively empty, but you know that's not the case when you actually get down there.

Looks to be the same deal for this.

And in my opinion, the fact alone that this looks to be a hell of a lot bigger than Gaur Plains (not to mention it's just as meticulously crafted) wets my appetite for exploration. As for the truly gigantic monsters, we've only seen two, so I don't feel as if it's taken away that holy-shit-am-I-supposed-to-be-able-to-beat-something-that ridiculously-huge vibe. :P

For me, the "wow factor" came from the possibility that everything I saw was reachable without a loading screen. The ground seemed a little boring as well, but after poring over the trailer so many times, I can't wait to explore it.

On the contrary, I felt like Xenoblade handled exploration very well. You got Experience Points just for discovering Landmarks and Secret Locations. There were locations I hadn't found until my second play through the game.

I never had to wait long for an enemy to respawn at all. I'm not sure where the problem was there. The ruins only occurred once or twice in the game, if I recall. I loved going into Gaur Plains for the first time at maybe Level 14 and simply finding a Level 80 beast roaming the fields. It's empowering when you return with the skills to take it.

Eh, I played Xenoblade one an HD television twice with absolutely no problem. People always complained about how Wii games looked terribly on an HD screen, but I was never bothered by it for years. I frequently visited the Dolphin thread, and while the screens looked great, I was never extremely impressed by it. They had comparison shots in a few instances, but I never recalled seeing the "Before" quality on my television.

Well, just a few days ago, I decided to fire up Dolphin and plug my computer to my television. I also booted up the game on my Wii, switched between inputs, and was absolutely floored. The difference is like night and day, and while I can easily go back to playing Xenoblade as intended, I will prefer HD visuals every time. It just looks better, and there's really no reason to not want it to look like that.

My biggest hope for X is that the overall tone is more vibrant. It looks a bit washed out.

This game and Xenoblade just rubs it in how far Square-Enix have fallen with Final Fantasy :( Having the massive budgets and comming up with so small scale games, blaiming cities in HD is hard and giving us corridors with no visible enemies.

Fucking shame I haven't invested in a wii and I probably won't buy a Wii U either..

Well, Monolith was part of Square at some point. But people always seem to forget SPD when talking about Nintendo. Those are the guys responsible for most "un-Nintendo" games, including Xenoblade, Eternal Darkness, Sin & Punishment and so on.

Yep, Square has completely lost track of what makes an RPG good. They haven't released anything of quality in years.

Just as awsome i guess. Honestly, the likes of Samaritan, the UE4 lava demo, Watchdogs, 1313 etc... sure, they look better, but i don't give a fuck. I've seen those trailers/demo's, they look awsome, i'd like to play games looking that good, sure, but it won't detract from the experience i'll have playing X. Better looking is always nice, but once games run in HD (albeit 720p), have a pleasing artstyle, and aren't broken, it won't be a dealbreaker for me. In fact, the main reason why i'm hoping WiiU isn't totally left behind by the 'other' (hihihi) next-gen systems, is that it can still get some interesting 3rd party support/ports/multiplats.

In car metaphors, sure i'd like to drive a Lamborghini, but doesn't mean i wouldn't be very happy driving a Porsche.

Here's my theory for why we were only shown one area: Xenoblade's reveal trailer in 2009 showed us a lot of different areas but it might be because it didn't technically look as good as open world games on PS360 so they relied more on its art direction and variety in its maps. Not sure if the trailer would of stood out as much if it was just stationed in Guar Plains.

With X, seeing as it, technically, looks as good if not better than most modern rpgs right now, they only need to rely on one map to be shown. It has wowed people so there's no need to show anymore. They're able to keep it all as a surprise.

Just my two cents.

I very much disagree here. Take Gaur Plains, for instance:

Out of the pics you posted it really really bugs me that I prefer the visuals for Xenoblade. I am hating myself for that because I hate the guys in the Wind Waker thread bitching about the artstyle change. This is not really the art style change as much as Monolith trying to appeal to a wider audience by muting its color palette. But seriously it is not only that but goddam does Xenoblade's world just kick all ass.

Sorry I don't think the world shown in X big as it may be tops Xenoblade when we look at the pics you just provided. What we see from the X pics is not only that it is deceptively empty it does not have the same awe from every angle that Xenoblade has. I really don't feel it is fair to even compare X to Xenoblade. If you asked me which game I would most want to play out of the pics shown I would chose the green ones every time.

One of the most fun I've had in Xenoblade was just going to a Landmark where it was like you could take a photo and the composition looked so grand. The vistas were all set up to blow you away.

X only did one thing right it showed you getting into dolls and flying but come on look at that world... in Xenoblade even when you were really far away or up really high like Distant Fingertip any where you looked was very very interesting stuff in your field of vision and it called you to explore.

I am extremely happy we have X coming but even with the HYPE X has a long way to go to beat the world design of Xenoblade. That flying Doll is looking down at a bunch of rocks it is not appealing it is not calling for exploration. Xenoblade was the game that did not give a shit that it was on a platform as weak as the Wii the world was just damn. This Area in X is huge yes but it looks like it could get boring fast, it seems to need something more it could very well be like one of those boring areas in Xenoblade that turn into a stunning world only at night.

my hope is that X is still early and there is something else we can see in the future from those landmarks. Having a big ass sword crossing the sky in the second location and to later be able to walk into Sword Valley goddamn. I don't see this in X so no way is it fair to compare them.

X is a new game... repeat after me X is a new game. That is the only way we can accept this new world Monolith is providing unless in the next video this same flying doll turns around from that same spot to show us what is behind him and boom a mega Mechonis like thing towers above you into the cloudy haze and you can fly even higher near it but you can't even reach its knee before you run out of fuel :)

there was another trailer here but it was taken down for some reason... so I hope the new one is as good. We still need to see much more from this game, can't wait.

Should be good. I'm expecting it to run over everything GAF has picked up on, but if they can find out anything we may have looked over then I will be pleasantly surprised, but either way it's good X is getting so much focus.

I can't wait for more of X trailers or screenshots in next Wii U ND or E3 2013.

It will help even if they just give us a name for the game... well last time they game a name they ended up changing it to Xenoblade. I wonder why they had to add Chronicles to it in the west though.

The should have given us some really sharp screenshot to go with this release.

A new trailer of a new area would be sweet.

They likely added Chronicles so it was more marketable. I guess it's easier to sell a game to an American/European audience as Xenoblade Chronicles rather than just Xenoblade.

I am seriously throthing for some new info too. The thing I'm most looking forward to now is the GameXplain video.

I also noticed in the trailer that your character was shooting the orange part underneath the monsters feet, so maybe you have to wait for some enemies to expose certain parts of their body to deal additional damage. They might work as weak points. This is only speculation, ofcourse.

Xenoblade Sales

edit: bad info... now stop sending me PMs about how Europe saved America

Nintendo is weird when it comes to screenshots, remember those small smash bros screens? and now they gave us 480p pikmin 3 screens. Project X 720p screens or bust.
