They have to spread out MK9/TTT2/KOF13 over different days because they're all massive time sinks if you do the full Top 8.

After last year i would say there's no chance in hell that KOF XIII is done on sunday. Not because it lacked hype (just the opposite); but because it took about 4 hours for the top 8, thereby pushing back Marvel and then pushing back Street Fighter into the next day on the east coast.

They split from Reverge Labs and became Lab Zero Games around June-ish. Just about everyone from the old team is there. This is how the patch came to fruition in the first place. The lead animator is waiting for the right moment to come back so they can start everything up again. It's a matter of money, not staff.
Autumn Games owns the IP as the publisher. The situation between them and Konami is something else that I wouldn't know about, but Autumn Games are basically the gatekeepers. The lawsuit tied up their financials though. This is the major reason we don't have more patches, a PC version and DLC characters.

Honestly? Other than that tweet, I think the competition has been pretty classy so far.
The next 6 days might get a little crazy though.

Depends on how its promoted/managed.
The last time Melee was at EVO, it hit the cap in all but one of the 4 qualifiers (this was when EVO was a circuit), and was the 2nd biggest game at EVO World itself, only slightly behind MvC 2. And this is despite 4 other grassroots tournaments having similar attendance figures in the same summer (Pound 2, FC Diamond, OC3, Super Champ Combo were all about as big as EVO).
Since that time, both the FGC and Smash communities have gotten exponentially bigger. A lot has changed since 07 but Melee has the community and casual fanbase to shatter records.

For Super Smash Bros Melee, it was only about 330 or so this year.
Mortal Kombat was under 300 last year, and most of us considered that low.
Street Fighter X Tekken had over 400 teams, Soul Calibur V was over 500, The King of Fighters XIII was over 1100 (mainly cause of shirts), Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 was over 1300, and Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition Version 2012 was over 1500.
Street Fighter X Tekken and The King of Fighters XIII got tons of DQs, but they still had a good amount.
Evo during 2007 isn't even remotely comparable to these days.
Unless there really are a lot of people that play traditional fighters that would try Super Smash Bros Melee, I don't see it being bigger than anything other than possibly Mortal Kombat or The King of Fighters XIII.
Don't get me wrong, the numbers for Super Smash Bros Melee, being a 12 year old game, is insane.
It definitely has consistency, but I just don't think it can pull in the numbers of new fighting games or Capcom games.

Most I remember a Melee tournament being was 350 at Pound something. Pretty low compared to numbers put out by other games last year. And that really isn't "exponentially bigger" than the 270 at EVO in 2007.

APEX is one of the larger tournaments, yes. The whole "EVO of Smash" thing is overblown though, when in reality Smash has a bunch of comparably sized majors, rather than one particularly big one. The FC, Pound, and Genesis series are just as big historically.
But I'd caution against comparing non-EVO numbers to EVO ones. ~340 Melee entrants at APEX is great for a non-EVO tournament, and the ~1200 total entrants across games makes it one of the biggest majors of the year. However, EVO is EVO. There are a loooot more casual players there, and frankly, the competition is basically a sideshow for the majority of people.
For comparison: try and find a MK, Persona, Tekken, KoF, or SFxT tournament with ~340 entrants outside EVO. Not only do they not exist (afaik? I heard Persona was big in NEC or something?), but once you eliminate the SF/Marvel crossovers the attendance is even lower.
Yeah, which is why I'm wondering if there would be a lot of spillover from the Capcom games.
Super Smash Bros is radically different from traditional fighters though, on a completely different system, with completely different controls.
But it really is hard to compare, cause yeah, nothing's comparable to Evo

What makes the Smash community big is not its peak entrants. The sheer quantity of events is staggering
But grassroots organizers have a hard time getting venues past a certain size.

Smash does have a sort of weird draw to certain types which may see it get some extra traction. Cosmowright, the Wind Waker streamer guy, said he'd go to EVO if Smash got in, for instance - but he doesn't play it and hasn't travelled to any Smash tournaments recently. That's anecdotal, but I imagine there are many more like him.

You've gotta remember that adding another event is cheap ($10? I don't remember what it was last year). Thats why there is so much crossover. People entered KoF just for the shirt.
You can't compare Smash exclusive majors to cross-game tournaments. The cost of entering a Melee-only tournament is venue + entry (like $60), plus the transportation costs to get there. Whereas for most of the people at EVO, since they are going anyway, its just the $10 entry. Its a completely different proposition.
Eeeh, I dunno how heavily Winter Brawl is pushing smash. They dont even have a thread on smashboards yet...
Like I said, its all about promotion. If EVO goes out of its way to push smash, like a real main game and not "the 8th game," it can do really well.
Oddler (the face of the ResidentSleeper twitch icon) is organizing a 48-hour Zelda speedrun marathon starting Saturday morning to help raise donations for Melee. He's reaching out to several other Zelda runners, so it could end up being a great stream. Evidently he felt very strongly about the jab at Melee not being a real fighter, haha.
Besides that, a lot of top Melee players are really starting to get behind this now. Almost all of them, including M2K, Mango, and Armada, have offered to do some combination of critiquing match videos and giving lessons to people who donate for melee. We're hoping to have a stream this weekend of Melee's greats commentating their favorite match videos too, a few have already signed up.
All in all it's a great time to be a melee player, even if we do end up getting sniped.

The latest Mortal Kombat is the 2nd best selling fighting game this gen, if you include Super Smash Bros Brawl.
But that doesn't change the fact that it's nowhere near as big at fighting game events as Capcom games or the latest releases.
Osu can probably clarify better, but I believe that the crowd for Mortal Kombat is largely unique. And while the numbers are smaller, they'll stay consistent overall.
However, I don't think there's much more spillover from other fighting games these days, and is similar to the Super Smash Bros community in that regard.
The game is just so different from most other games, which is why you won't see too many new pot monsters from other games.

They'd have to have a Gamecube controller, which I highly doubt most PS3 players would. And there's the time they'd have to put to play (not even practice it, but during the event itself).
Then they'd have to want to play a completely different type of game, which if Mortal Kombat is any indication, people might not be willing to.
Super Smash Bros Melee isn't a new game, everyone knows what it is, and has played.
Would they bother playing it at Evo, when they don't play other games that are much more similar, and has less barriers to entry (for the typical pot monster)?

Oh come on dude. Mortal Kombat 9 doesn't have the cultural penetration of Smash. The sales numbers aren't even close...even among FGC people, I'd wager that just about all of them have played Melee while only a small percentage have tried MK9.
The Gamecube controller thing is pretty true but I'm sure people would let them borrow one for their tournament matches. Happens all the time. Though that is a valid point.

But my larger disagreement is that there aren't old Smash heads all up in the FGC. Speaking from personal experience, and having attended tons of FGC and smash events...its a lot of the same people.

Yeah, Smash is out, there's no way it's going to happen now, especially since they shortened the deadline. The voice actor thing reeled Skullgirls a ton of money, but Smash really only has the fans to support and not the company itself so although the Smash community is larger, but getting voice actors from the game as a prize worked a lot better.

The people who overreacted are definitely the vocal minority, do not let them represent the players who actually attend tournaments regularly.
