VGleaks: Orbis Unveiled! [Updated]

For third party games with the best graphics possible , ill probably upgrade my PC

Then you should know the diff between DDR3 RAM (your normal PC RAM) and GDDR5 (the RAM on your gfx card = fast as fuck because vidya games)

Orbis is GDDR5 for both system and gfx.
Durango seems to be DDR3 as system and GFX RAM + EDRAM

And regardning the WiiU, 8 Jaguar cores smokes that PPC 3 core CPU, WiiU is DDR3 RAM but only 1GB and GPU in Durango and Orbis is way better than the WIIU.

How much? We only have numbers
How will this affect games? We havent seen any games yet... but more poer = gamez look betar!!11!!

I'm not trying anything. I don't have a WiiU , ill probably be forced to get one to play Zelda, X, metroid , bayonetta 2, smash brothers etc .

For graphical showcases ill upgrade my PC.
Fine then, good for you. But if you're not interested in Orbis, why are you posting in this thread?

The difference between of GDDR5 is well explained in this thread thanks to contributors.
So making GC-Xbox and 'blast processing' analogies gives the impression you don't actually want to learn anything from this thread at all without explaining why you refute given information.

Because I'm interested in the specs of the new playstation which was rumored to be a beast with up to 16GB RAM and to make time WiiU look like the Wii in comparison.

GameCube vs Xbox RAM is a fair comparison as the former had less but much faster ram over the latter .

Why are you pushing RAM as the only differing factor between xbox1 and GC? Its not a valid comparison here.
CPU was totally different architechtures, PPC and x86, different clock rates. Xbox1 had a HDD and more space on discs. GPU was better on xbox1, but no slouch on GC.

Why even bring those into the discussion?

You should have acted.
They're already here.
Their post history told of their return.
Their defeat was merely a delay
'Til the time after the Wii U released,
When the sons of GAF would spill their own blood.
But no one wanted to believe,
Believe they even existed.
And when the truth finally dawns,
It dawns in bans.
But there's one they fear;
In their tongue, he's bish-- bishoptl!

Lol, this is probably the ugliest shit I've seen yet:

16GB of RAM? Yeah. By the way, I've got a bridge to sell you.

I'm not saying its the only factor . Quite the opposite. I'm questioning why there is so much focus on ram speed when nobody cared so much in the past.

So because the GameCube had much faster ram over Xbox it was more powerful ?

Blast processing was a buzzword associated with a faster CPU.

Currently everything points to the Orbis having significantly faster memory, a superior GPU, and an APU that itself is pretty damn solid. That with the more streamlined OS (therefore smallest footprint).

The Gamecube had a few pools of faster memory, the Xbox had significantly faster CPU, GPU, and a much larger pool of very adequate memory.

See the difference?

What's the difference ? Why is that ridiculous ? Are you saying the ps4 will have better graphics than a high end PC ? If so for how long ?
Probably at launch, but only because PC devs have been building what amount to up-rez'ed PS3 and 360 games.

The first people who get a crack at coding big budget games specifically to the next tier of hardware will be Sony and Microsoft first parties. They'll set a new bar and PC devs will quickly catch up and surpass them, thanks to far superior hardware.

But then it also depends on what you mean by "high end PC". On PC you have the option of dual GTX 690's with 24 GB of system memory, a beefy CPU, and run the entirety of your games off of a SSD (obviously much faster than blu-ray for data access). It's a non-quantifiable standard.

I'm not saying its the only factor . Quite the opposite. I'm questioning why there is so much focus on ram speed when nobody cared so much in the past.

Because there is a reason why the retail cards comparable to the GPUs that will be in Durango and Orbis have large on-board allocations of GDDR5. The silicon runs fast enough to benefit from the faster ram.

just DDR3 for Durango would be a serious bottleneck. Adding 32MB of higher speed ram is an attempt by MS to ameliorate that fact. This is adding a prosthetic to fix a weakness while Sony's going with the inherently stronger solution that is itself better than the prosthetic MS is using.

the wiiu will be the wii no question about that.

and also ps3 games like killzone 3 and gow ascension look better than anything out on the wiiu. you think sony will announce the ps4 and show games similar to ps3?
trolls have started to melt already lol

LOL Ars just added ram to Orbis
With leaked details of octal-core processor banks paired with 8GB of RAM, the PlayStation 4 "Orbis" is sounding powerful (just for comparison of RAM alone, the 8GB of system memory is roughly 32 times more than the current model).

Can someone translate these specs into the PC equivalent for a laymen? Like what PC AMD/Intel CPU and video card would be about the same as these? And how does it compare to the rumored Xbox sequel specs?

I'm sure someone has said it already but there's 50 pages... thanks.

I'm not arguing anything . I know Wii u is weaker but the "real next gen" consoles were supposed to be like the leap from Wii - ps3 but its clear its MUCH closer this time around
You will be significantly impressed by the visuals both Orbis/Durango produce. Everyone will. Krillin isn't going to come close. The next generation is essentially going to be a repeat of the current one. These specs are promising.

1.6 billion triangles/s, 1.6 billion vertices/s.......how is it possible?

That's less than 7900 series.

Dont forget, developers think about frames, not seconds. Divide 1.6 billion triangles by 60, and you will get 26.6 million triangles per one frame in a 60fps game.

I think you're comparing apples to oranges with that last sentence and I also think that your posts in this thread seem to go to a goal that doesn't involve interest:

RAM total is only 2x WiiU ?

Yet people still say the difference between Wiiu and ps4 will be similar to Wii and ps3 when ps3 has like 6x the ram of Wii.

I doubt it. At this level we'll be getting clean enough visuals where the real difference will be in the quality of the assets. And few PC and multi devs have the chops to go toe to toe with companies like ND and Santa Monica. I mean, Crysis running on my PC technically whoops the shit out of Uncharted 2, but I know which one has made me ooh aah the most. Can't wait to see what these artists can accomplish with this new hardware

You really can't. the Orbis is supposedly using a GPU based off of ATi's 7950 laptop series, but the additional tweaking they're giving it plus the much more streamlined interface it will have with the CPU and system memory plus the ability for devs to code more closely to the metal makes comparisons near impossible.

You can do a look in some other threads or google the dev kit specs for both to see what Sony and MS are telling devs to shoot for, but that's a moving target itself.

They really think these things will push 4K? Maybe in the sense that the PS360 push 1080p, the capability is there but for any sufficiently complex game the power doesn't allow it so they drop down to 720p and often lower. 4K outout may be supported, but not used in any complex game.

They obviously don't read Neogaf.

Yeah, I'm not sure why people are expecting 720p/30 to remain the standard. It will be 1080p. And there are several reports of Sony pushing devs to target 60fps too. The PC/console disparity should be much smaller next gen.

That's almost certainly the case, games like the equivalent of PixelJunk X or Super StarDust HD should be possible on a next-gen system running at 4k.

People say this every generation, it hasn't been true yet. Its not about "clean enough", its about the moving bar of what you need to make up artistically and what you can code to be done for you in real time.

One of ND's big benefits over the competition is how well they seamlessly bake in high quality layers, such as lighting. There is a good chance that next generation more and more devs will move to a real time lighting solution. So ND being gods at baking lighting in without it being blatantly obvious is no longer an advantage if everyone is getting better lighting via real time lighting engines.

Art is the difference maker within a generation, but it doesn't trump significant advantages in brute force. The best carpenter in the world isn't going frame a house faster with a hammer than a solid carpenter will with a nail gun.

The first parties will set a new high water mark that PC devs will top in relatively short order. The only thing that will stop them from doing it is budget. If they can't find a publisher willing to bankroll an eight figure project where a large portion of it will go to PC only features PC gaming will lag a bit longer than they do in most generations. This I could see happening (see Crytek going for free2play games), but eventually PC always wins.

Why would it be? With the advent of 4k monitors that will be where PC gaming is headed. Even still high end PCs right now already outmuscle these new consoles so I don't particularly see why 3 years from now the gap wouldn't be pretty huge.

I fully expect some mini games or other PSN games to hit 4K. For full games it will be impossible

1. 1080p is the max for HDTV currently and 4k won't become commonplace for a several more years at least

2. Diminishing returns. The jump from 480p to 720p is huge. 720p to 1080p is also huge, but you need bigger displays to see the difference. 1080p to 4k will need much larger displays than we currently have to appreciate the extra detail.

My point is, if 1080p/60 is common next gen, that's pretty much as good as it gets for current HDTV/sizes/viewing distance.

People say this every generation, it hasn't been true yet.

I think it's already been observed on the current generation : the most iconic and/or popular games were not the most technically impressive.
The PS2-Xbox era was all about games like GTA or Burnout, based in great part on their open world possibilities and physics engine, respectively. The PS360 is mostly about Call of Duty (or Minecraft and Just Dance for a more dramatic effect ;) ), while many other games are more advanced technically.

There will always be impressive technical feats on new consoles, but they're mostly appreciated by a nitpicking minority, and they're not a game-seller any more.

Who's arguing ? I'm asking pretty simple questions.

You seem upset.

If it makes you feel any better, the Wii U was not going to get any ports regardless of the disparity with Durango & Orbis. 3rd parties don't think there is an audience. So whether the technical gap is as large as last gen is irrelevant.

The hardware specs are pretty decent for both consoles. However, the bigger bandwidth from GDDR5 and the better GPU + the GPGPU functionality indicate that we will have more juice on Orbis.

The "special sauce" on Durango won't be able to outperform this so easily. Microsoft will most likely rely on their muscles as a software developer, meaning a better debugger and stuff like that.

Holy... 8GB of GDDR5 RAM. Planning the next Mars mission, are we?

3,5GB will probably be more than enough for the next years. High-res textures incoming.

Next gen games in Full HD @ 30fps will look awesome, nothing less.

8GB is the miniumum and i mean absolute minimum for next generation.

If you want to see a truly next generation experience that lasts 7 years till 2021 you need to have lots of ram.

It's just basic common sense. If it were upto me i would have 8gb for ps4 os and 8gb for games.

Then you will have a console that will keep game developers happy and also sony firmware engineers who want to add new services and apps to the system. win win

Didn't Gears of War became an insta hit largely for its graphics ?

What does 32 ROPs compare to in the PC GPU space? Would that have fillrate to handle 4k well, or would it be limited to 1080p?

Any news on Durango ROPs?

PS3 had 256/256, I think 4Gb is plenty.

RAM is so cheap there really isn't a reason to put more in. But I guess when your taking a hit on millions of products that cheapness isnt so cheap anymore.
