MS Xbox 360 HD-DVD Player: Who's getting it?

My interest in this add on is really growing the closer its release gets. Im still on the fence but some good impressions would pretty much be enough to put me over the top.

With that being said, is anyone here getting it for sure and will you be posting impressions as soon as you get it? its going to come with King Kong for a limited time supposedly so Id like to get as much for my money as I can and get it early.

From the impressions Ive seen nobody has mentioned how regular DVDs PQ looks compared to playing them on the 360 itself. any difference? any upgrade in PQ for regular DVDs from the standard 360 DVD player would be a huge plus.

my 360 is hooked up to a 46" Sony Wega rear projection LCD HDTV. if anyone is buying the HD-DVD player with a similar TV (size and display type) Id love to hear your impressions.

I'll post my impression when I get mine... I have similar setup as yours - My 360 is hooked up to 60 inch Sony XBL rear projection LCD HDTV. I'll be able to pick up my HD-DVD player on 7th, but won't be able to post any impression probably until 8th, because I have to work late for the mid-term election coverage. :(

As for HD-DVD attachment... I don't think it's a waste of money - one thing for sure is it's the cheapest of all HD-DVD for at least a good year or so to come. Having this as well as a PS3 allows me to cover both grounds at the least amount of money. I plan to buy a decent stand alone player when the price is more reasonable and all.

i've got the 60" version of that TV. hd dvd's look phenomenal, about as good as the 1080p westinghouse i use at work after careful calibration.

make sure you set all inputs to be 1080i for the most part - the vertical resolution, if i'm not mistaken, is 768 which means 720 gets stretched. better to have 1080i/p downscaled to 768.

I don't think it is worth it unless I see a substantial difference in picture quality. I'm getting a PS3, so I suppose that contributes alot to my decision. I'll see what happens with it.

On one hand, I was originally going to just settle on the PS3's BR player for a while and sell my upscaling DVD player to free up an HDMI slot, but after finding out that's not even a standard feature (right now at least), I don't know if I'd want to pick up an HD-DVD player and have two format players around. At $200 though it's not breaking my bank.

Long story short, I don't know :lol

I'm not. I mean, I'm going to buy a PS3 and it comes with a high-definition media player, so...

If I wasn't going to buy a PS3, I think I would buy it. US$ 200 is cheap (if you already own the Xbox 360).

I'm not, I don't have a current DVD collection so I'm not likely to wade into a format war collection either. That being said 2 of my coworkers have already preordered the addon. They're movie buffs and were considering buying the HD-DVD Toshiba player until they realized they could get the 360 addon for a lot less money.

I'll buy it next year if HD-DVD still has a good deal of exclusive releases. If most movies get released on both HD formats there's really no point in owning both.

With the recent confirmation that the drive works on pc too, I'll be picking one up. It will come in handy because of the pc connectivity.

already preordered mine from Gamestop :D

So.. that leaves me with a PS3. Convenient, that.

I didn't say that.

All i'm saying is its too early to call a winner in the format war, and its not worth getting stuck with hardware that may be completely useless in 2 years.

Plus, at the moment, there aren't too many HD-DVD or Blu-Ray discs you can't watch on HBO-HD or Showtime-HD.

is this true? link? I wasnt even aware of that but sounds like a nice plus.

right now if I watch movies its through my 360 and standard DVDs just dont look good through the 360 on my set. or at least I get the feeling they should look better.

Ive considered getting a DVD player that upconverts but then I know at some point I would want to be able to watch HD DVDs the more the title lists grow. who knows how long it will take for the format wars to sort themselves out but I think 200 bucks is not an unreasonable amount to spend to get the most out of my current set up.

lachesis Ill be looking forward to your impressions. chances are if I see this thing at a store Ill just grab it.

honestly if it takes 2 years for this player to become totally useless thats a plus in my opinion.

I missed the part where you were going to pay my premium cable bill. :lol

Wait....you can use it on the PC? So do you need the 360?

I think Vista has a driver for it built in, but won't come with a decoder software.

Also, you need minimum of like 4200+ A64 and 1GB of RAM or something to play the movies. Crappy PCs need not apply. :(

Apparently you can with Vista out of the box (as long as you have powerful enough PC to decode the video and that you have decoder software). It was mentioned by several sources siting MS.

In all honesty, you can’t really compare the PQ of a good next gen DVD to HD broadcasts, especially not on cable.

Anyway, I will get it, sticking to renting for the time being.

Does anybody if this will come with any sort of 4:3/vertical fit option on it? I tend to watch TV shows on DVD now as much as I do movies, but the players themselves tend to fill the screen out with it better than my TV.

you can't afford premium channels, but $200 is chump change for a disposible piece of tech?

PS: Not having HBO = Not having The Wire = No reason to live.

A guy that works for Microsoft Germany said on his page that the drive works perfectly fine with Win XP, but only as a DVD drive (he had one to test it) and that MS at the moment doesn't have plans to let it support HD-DVDs when connected to a computer

sounds like a job for Linux hackers.

I want to buy it, but I am going to give it a week until a bunch of people who know what they are talking about have tested it out.

2.0 analog isn't worth a mention. I'm talking 5.1 at least.

yeah but its a one time $200 as opposed to a monthly fee for premium channels. Its been so long since Ive had premium channels I dont know how it works now but it seems like from what I remember movies used to come out on HBO etc. later than their actual release to home video.

Im not too interested in watching their featured programming either. I dont really watch much TV outside of sports and movies. There are enough good shows for me on regular cable.

also movies on premium channels are scheduled programming. I know the answer to this is DVR but thats more money, no?

i'm getting it.

and this thread might be more appropriate for my question:

anyone know the exact euro release date?
i'm getting conflicting reports from different retailers. everything from november to december to 2007.

The price for the player is so amazing, you can't pass it up. At it's price, it makes it a way more affordable choice than the PS3. I mean, considering it's packed with King Kong HD-DVD which is a $149.99 value in itself, you'd be a fool not to upgrade your Xbox 360.

King Kong is worth $150?!

was actually refering to your bad phrasing. Made it sound like you can't get analog audio out.

IMO it's not bad phrasing. The HD DVD unit has no analog audio outs. It only has a USB cable to interface with the Xbox 360.

You must have a comfy office in Redmond.

Right. Hense the term "add on". There's analog out on the 360. It's bad phrasing.

I'm gonna get it as soon as I can and somebody at AVS forums has reviewed it (unless it's too bad, obviously, that's the whole reason to wait for a review).

And regarding 5.1 analogue out, I have some doubt that everybody complaining would be able to properly ABX a full rate DTS soundtrack from one of the newer formats coming. Seriously, for the grand majority of people 192 kbps MP3s are totally transparent...
