MS Xbox 360 HD-DVD Player: Who's getting it?

Stereo? Makes a great immersive "next gen" theater experience huh?

No no, it's stereo only for the new "hi def" audio modes introduced in HD-DVDs and BRs. The regular 5.1 is still there for you so don't you worry. ;)

I've thought about it. The guy Major Nelson interviewed, "e", has the same set I do, 65" Mits RPTV. He said it looks amazing on his set. I know my set is calibrated very well and HD material looks very good. Better than many of the LCD's and Plasmas selling today.

I just don't know how much use I'll get out of it. I rarely buy movies anymore.... but Netflix is on board with HD-DVD. I dunno.... still on the fence.

I'm buying it.

I've only got a 1080i component-only TV anyway.

$200 is perfect for this device.

When I get a better TV in a couple of years, I'll step up to something better.

I am, even though I know I probably won't go start collecting HD-DVDs.

I already picked up Equilibrium and preordered M:I-3 :)
And next month's Sabra magazine (hot Japanese babe mag) will have a free HD-DVD sampler...mmm, bikini babes in HD.

I've got one pre-ordered. If anyone is interested in HD-DVD, there's no reason NOT to get one. Video performance is on par with the HD-A1, and from what I've read, the load times of the add-on are superb.

Also keep in mind, that the player is upgradable over time through software updates over live = futureproof! :) There's a MS dude over on AVS-Forums who's soliciting for opinions on what additional features users would like to see for the add-on.

no think its a waste of money, I will get a standalone player when I know what side to choose, right now thats still open.

Thread link? (that's a very large forum to go hunting through)

If I knew, I probably couldn't. As it is, I actually don't know right now.

I might get it. I really wish it was 99 dollars. That would be a no-brainer.

but 199......eeehhh...meh.

That was my original thought also, but then I decided that if I only get 2 years of use out of the device, it'll be worth it.

I'm also betting that somebody somewhere is going to write drivers for the thing to work on a Windows PC. Microsoft said they didn't have time to do it before ship date, but they may do it in the future. If they don't get around to it, someone else will and having a USB PC HD-DVD drive would be a nice little bonus to owning the device.

this "2 years of use" idea is rubbish, thats not what dvd players are about - whats more important is what will it be used for.

i.e. will there be a worthwhile catalogue for it? if yes, and you come out with 10-20 discs that you love and will keep for years, thats value.

but if not, and you find yourself with 5, and maybe a few token ones you dont like that much, thats not value at all. even if you can re-watch them for the next 10 years.

i should have thought of this before i bought my psp. now thats a great example of NOT VALUE :D so far anyway.

but hey if you happen to be rich as some of you may be, who gives a damn just buy what you can while you're alive!

If they can get the price down to $100 at some point, I would consider buying. I'm not interested in making a real financial commitment at the beginning of a format war. Just a bad idea, IMO.

You're missing the bigger picture. You can rent the movies from Netflix and similar services. If the format fails, and you choose to rent before dipping into your wallet further, you only lose out on the initial purchase.

I kept my first DVD player for 2 years and paid around $200 for it. I upgraded to a newer DVD player 2 years later that had twice the features for around the same price, maybe a little bit cheaper.

In the world of electronics, getting 2 years out of a device before upgrading is not all that uncommon, unless you're spending over $1k for a TV.

And like I said, when, not if, they make Windows drivers for it, I can shovel it off to my PC permanently and then get a nicer more feature-rich player in a couple of years.. that's IF the format makes it.

He's talking about the software I think.

Dont do it HG.. No'oooooooooooooooooo

The only reason I would get it if they announced the H3 Legendary edition will be available in HDDVD only. (or a price cut to $100)

I hate you (>__<)

I'm tempted because it's pretty cheap, but not being able to upscale my DVDs because of component copy protection is a real downer. Finding out that PS3 won't be able to upscale DVDs either has left me feeling like I have no choice but to buy a stand alone movie player.

Does your TV have a VGA input?

If it does... problem solved since the Xbox 360 will upscale right now over VGA.

VGA looks like crap compared to component for DVD playback. You lose contrast and everything is washed out. I have a 360 with a 1080p TV. It was a mistake to not put HDMI in the 360 but its a kick in the face to release this drive with no HDMI output since it will not and cannot support hi def audio.

Let not forget once these studio's get ICT flag happy and your HD DVD drive now is the equivelant of your standard DVD player.

I know the arguament at AVS is the movie studios will not do this and I say that's because nobody has the means to rip Blue ray and HD DVD. When these movies start showing up on torrent sites you watch how fast they implement the ICT flag.

It's a fucking $200 add on for those who has 360 and want a cheap option to play HD-DVD movies. Stop your belly aching about there not being a HD surround and ICT support through HDMI. If MS waited for HDMI to mature, it would be launching late this year like the PS3.

And by the time HDMI and ICT flags matters, you'll have $100 HD-DVD stand alone players that has both of those and still plays all those HD-DVD movies you've bought and been enjoying on a $200 freaking add-on!

Why would I enjoy an add on that I can't view in 1080p? Or listen to Hi Def audio?

It is not a fully functional player. I agree somewhat on the HDMI on the 360 but to not have it on the HD drive is a disgrace. All they needed was an HDMI output on this thing and it would have been able to upconvert and all that.

Their have been rules set forth to govern how this content is played. You dont get to go around that just so you can release a player that doesnt support the resolutions it is designed to play. Then say that the rules are wrong and dont worry, they wont set that flag anyway.

why are there so many people in here stating that they arent getting it and why? I started this thread to get an idea of how many people have already decided they are going to get it so that I could know whether or not to expect impressions at this forum soon.

It sounds like a good number of people are getting it so I hope to see some detailed impressions. the rest of you can go watch your movies on your current players or go get in line for a PS3 now.

You need to get yourself the Tosh HD-2A since you have a good surround reciever and 1080p set with HDMI. I don't know why you are bitching about an add-on that is obviously not meant to be marketed to your ass.

It is not a fully functional player.

NO SHIT! It's a ****ing USB 2.0 add on drive!

That would be an impossible scenario unless this thing is not an add-on and is instead a full fledged player. That would make it expensive as a full player. WHAT'S THE DAMN POINT THEN?!?

None of the rules are being violated. You need to do more reasearch before bitching about this.

It is most likely an issue with your TV.
VGA can look stellar (probably better than component) on the 360.

Whaaaat? I think the VGA input on your TV just stinks. DVD picture quality through my 360 via VGA cable is vastly superior than through my highly rated Oppo and Zenith DVD upscalers via HDMI.

My TV has a VGA-9 input but I don't think it is even for video. It is a rear projection CRT. It has HDMI and component.

The dashboard update has to come out first, I assume. I think that's probably the reason there's no date other than "mid November" (per Peter Moore at X06).

if I had a hi def tv I would maybe get one. 130 pounds is really not too bad.

But since I am gaming on a 19 inch monitor I don't really need one and I also don't want to support either format.

Most seem to enjoy their games in non HDMI 720p, I think the movies will look fine too and you wont get anything as cheap as this anytime soon.

If you want 1080p HDMI better wait and get a BluRay player later. It will still take some time until there is good number of BD-50 titles available, but in the long run the extra 20GB will make the difference.

Why, do you foresee movies in the future averaging more than 2 hours? :P
