i'm getting conflicting reports from different retailers. everything from november to december to 2007.
jarosh said:hello
hmm. okay, thanks anyway.arne said:afaik there have been no street dates announced for any territory.

amazon.de says december 8 and amazon.co.uk says november 24.
guess you can't comment on that...?

but 199......eeehhh...meh.
kaizoku said:this "2 years of use" idea is rubbish, thats not what dvd players are about - whats more important is what will it be used for.
i.e. will there be a worthwhile catalogue for it? if yes, and you come out with 10-20 discs that you love and will keep for years, thats value.
but if not, and you find yourself with 5, and maybe a few token ones you dont like that much, thats not value at all. even if you can re-watch them for the next 10 years.
i should have thought of this before i bought my psp. now thats a great example of NOT VALUEso far anyway.
but hey if you happen to be rich as some of you may be, who gives a damn just buy what you can while you're alive!

bill0527 said:I kept my first DVD player for 2 years and paid around $200 for it. I upgraded to a newer DVD player 2 years later that had twice the features for around the same price, maybe a little bit cheaper.
In the world of electronics, getting 2 years out of a device before upgrading is not all that uncommon, unless you're spending over $1k for a TV.
Troidal said:I am, even though I know I probably won't go start collecting HD-DVDs.
I already picked up Equilibrium and preordered M:I-3
And next month's Sabra magazine (hot Japanese babe mag) will have a free HD-DVD sampler...mmm, bikini babes in HD.
---- said:I'm tempted because it's pretty cheap, but not being able to upscale my DVDs because of component copy protection is a real downer. Finding out that PS3 won't be able to upscale DVDs either has left me feeling like I have no choice but to buy a stand alone movie player.
bill0527 said:Does your TV have a VGA input?
If it does... problem solved since the Xbox 360 will upscale right now over VGA.
jhferry said:VGA looks like crap compared to component for DVD playback. You lose contrast and everything is washed out. I have a 360 with a 1080p TV. It was a mistake to not put HDMI in the 360 but its a kick in the face to release this drive with no HDMI output since it will not and cannot support hi def audio.
Let not forget once these studio's get ICT flag happy and your HD DVD drive now is the equivelant of your standard DVD player.
I know the arguament at AVS is the movie studios will not do this and I say that's because nobody has the means to rip Blue ray and HD DVD. When these movies start showing up on torrent sites you watch how fast they implement the ICT flag.
jhferry said:Why would I enjoy an add on that I can't view in 1080p? Or listen to Hi Def audio?
It is not a fully functional player.
I agree somewhat on the HDMI on the 360 but to not have it on the HD drive is a disgrace. All they needed was an HDMI output on this thing and it would have been able to upconvert and all that.
Their have been rules set forth to govern how this content is played. You dont get to go around that just so you can release a player that doesnt support the resolutions it is designed to play. Then say that the rules are wrong and dont worry, they wont set that flag anyway.
Shogmaster said:You need to get yourself the Tosh HD-2A since you have a good surround reciever and 1080p set with HDMI. I don't know why you are bitching about an add-on that is obviously not meant to be marketed to your ass.
NO SHIT! It's a ****ing USB 2.0 add on drive!
That would be an impossible scenario unless this thing is not an add-on and is instead a full fledged player. That would make it expensive as a full player. WHAT'S THE DAMN POINT THEN?!?
None of the rules are being violated. You need to do more reasearch before bitching about this.
It is most likely an issue with your TV.jhferry said:VGA looks like crap compared to component for DVD playback. You lose contrast and everything is washed out. I have a 360 with a 1080p TV.

My TV has a VGA-9 input but I don't think it is even for video. It is a rear projection CRT. It has HDMI and component.bill0527 said:Does your TV have a VGA input?

come on, they already lose some $300 with every drive, be a little more gratefuldirtmonkey37 said:I might get it. I really wish it was 99 dollars. That would be a no-brainer.

The dashboard update has to come out first, I assume. I think that's probably the reason there's no date other than "mid November" (per Peter Moore at X06).arne said:If I knew, I probably couldn't. As it is, I actually don't know right now.
quetz67 said:If you want 1080p HDMI better wait and get a BluRay player later.
It will still take some time until there is good number of BD-50 titles available, but in the long run the extra 20GB will make the difference.
excellent news, where does this come from?quetz67 said:looks like the 1080p (and other stuff) update will be out on Halloween
