VGleaks: Orbis Unveiled! [Updated]

Good news: sony joins the HSA Foundation:
http://www.fudzilla.com/home/item/30278-hsa-foundation-gets-few-more-members

The HSA (Heterogeneous System Architecture) Foundation is a not-for-profit consortium for SoC IP vendors, OEMs, academia, SoC vendors, OSVs and ISVs whose goal is to make it easy to program for parallel computing. HSA members are building a heterogeneous compute ecosystem, rooted in industry standards, for combining scalar processing on the CPU with parallel processing on the GPU while enabling high bandwidth access to memory and high application performance at low power consumption. HSA defines interfaces for parallel computation utilizing CPU, GPU and other programmable and fixed function devices, and support for a diverse set of high-level programming languages, thereby creating the next foundation in general purpose computing.

Excellent!!! - (I Got no idea what anything of that means really)

Consoles may be a lot more efficient and have extra hardware, but I still don't see how a 1.2 TF GPU should be outperforming a 4+ TFLOPs GPU.

In any case, I hope some of the extra power is put into image quality (shameless copy from Crysis 3 beta thread)

PS3/PC high

look at that 0,25 Tflop to 4Tflop difference.

I am joking but you can see that Crysis 3 hardly use hardware to full extend because they still had to program with consoles in mind.

It's about time. When they first announced HSA Foundation, I was surprised they weren't on there. I was in the AMD chatroom for the event they did, and I mentioned that. The PR person in the chat seemed to imply that Sony was going to join.

lol indeed!

How come other url-ends don't do that?

Routes. PS4 seems to be already accounted for in their routing code, so that's why that resource is redirecting you to the homepage instead of triggering a 404.

As for the gifs/etc., they've msot likely got some asset redirection going on for missing media (pictures, video, audio, etc.) If you request a .php page or images you'll see that you get redirected as they are accounted for in either the routes of the .htaccess (rewrites).

You can get the server to bug out though and send you an Apache error page instead of one of their routed pages. Example: http://us.playstation.com/this_is_living.jsp

This extension/pattern isn't caught by their routing/.htaccess. :)

The worst part of these new generations is that eveyone thinks they engineered these systems. No one has a clue what's actually happening behind the scenes except the people working on these machines. You idiots think MS is going to intentionally gimp their system? Reserve your judgment until official specs are released and games are shown.

It's the internet, everybody's an expert. :D
I agree with what you said, you have to assume that the designers in each company are not stupid, and certainly considered different possible architectures, including the ones their competitors chose. As for myself I have no shame to admit that I have no idea how many Tflops or GB/s are required for a next gen experience.

The choices the constructors made have their own costs and benefits (raw performance, cost, specific features,...), and it will take some time (and official info) before we can get the big picture. But those consoles were not randomly designed, each aspect of each architecture has its reasons and purpose.

Shitty compared to what though? I think that's what is missing from that equation. Shitty compared to the other GPU options at the time? Not at all. Shitty compared to Xenos? That's an exaggeration but that has more to do with AMD providing a better than expected GPU than Nvidia providing a lackluster GPU.
I think ATi was contractually obligated to provide such and such specs, they didn't gift MS anything unexpected.

I really hope we get a Crysis 3 re-release on next gen consoles. If I knew it was a launch title for Orbis, I'd skip the current gen versions and just wait for that.
Why not just buy the PC version some time after its release? It'll cost you much much less than the next-gen re-release and still look much better.

This confirms that it will be called PS4. And they better since any other name is just stupid and illogical.
The shi part of the rumor was bullshit but I expected them to go with a different name like with the Vita. The Wii U and Vita's releases and sales issues may have made them reconsider. I will be happy with it being called PS4. It's so much easier to market as a new console instead of an add on and people know it'll be a more powerful PlayStation.

I think naming it PlayStation 4 would be a mistake. Regardless of whether or not you agree with 'the new ipad' or 'the new Xbox', its going to make PS4 look old school and less exciting to consumers. Its a psychological thing.

If everyone else was still going with the numerical naming schemes at this point then I'd say PS4 would be a safe name. They need to reinvigorate the brand though. Vita shows they're willing to try but its a younger product series than their consoles.

Really hoping for just PlayStation. PlayStation Orbis also works for me.

Maybe he doesn't have a gaming-pc :P?

Or doesn't want to deal with hardware. On/Off button for consoles is actually imo very big deal. No problems in any games, almost no crashes etc.

As someone mentioned PS3 never was called in japan with japanese name and numbering it always was Playstation three from eng.

Then it's a high time to get as he seems to be quite a tech enthusiast.

I don't have one at the moment either, I had to sell my HTPC and am doing all my gaming on a laptop (which has better performance than PS360 still). I am planning to wait until Orbango are out and build a rig that will handle console ports at 60fps.

Yeah I can see that, as much as I've become a sucker for tweaking things in my pc-games I do somewhat miss the days of pop-in the disc and play.

iPhone 5 is totally old, right?

That and the large initial cost are the only reasons that I haven't gotten into PC gaming. I'd be so OCD about tweaking and framerate that I would never get to playing. I like it being the developers' fault when something looks and runs like ass, not mine.

BC is cool but I think but it doesn't need to be standard.

A better model is to offer a premium version of the system that comes with hardware BC. I love my fat 60 GB Ps3 baby.

What the hell? Of course it's going to be called the Playstation 4, it better be called the PS4.

Yeah just look at iPhone 3 and iPhone 4. And Galaxy S3.

the number 4 in japan is equivalent to the number 13 in the west. it actually seems unlikely that they will call it the playstation 4.

They can call it Playstation Yon (4) instead of Playstation Shi (4 or Die).

In US, we'll just say PSY or PS Yo. [runaway]

So what happens with PS+ Subscribers, who secide to be early adopters, move over to Orbis?

Assuming many will trade in their PS3s for it, what will they have to show for their posible multi-year subscrption?

Will they pull a Vita and wait months before supporting the subscriptions?

do people really think sony is going to not call it ps4 because of the fucking 4=death crap?
wreaks of "i'm an expert on japanese culture"

if they dont call it ps4, its going to be because of other reasons, not some stupid superstitious nonsense.
resident evil 4, final fantasy 4, dragon quest 4, etc

Japan have been steering heavily towards handheld anyways. Just name it the Playstation 4. It wouldn't make that much of a difference with another name over there. The rest of the world would know it's the next play station and you won't have to beat into people's head that it's the next system. Don't pull a Nintendo.

I hope it's just PS4, I like how they continue with the same name. Playstation has always been a great name for a game machine.

I think ATi was contractually obligated to provide such and such specs, they didn't gift MS anything unexpected.

I'm not sure what that has to do with what I said though. I agree with what you said, but that doesn't change that AMD providing a better than expected GPU doesn't mean Nvidia provided a bad GPU.

Yeah because I totally said PlayStation consoles are the last line of products in existence to use a numbering scheme ever in the world ever.

I'm implying that if successful brands are beginning to ditch the numbering scheme altogether, and Sony has already shown they're willing to change branding from an expected numerical release if a product then its not too far of a stretch to say its possible they'll modify this one too.

The second half of my post was an opinion on what Sony should do. I think ditching numerical schemes help make consumers feel like what they're getting is new, fresh, will last them, and even get enhancements along the way. Think products as services, not set in stone products. PS4 sounds like yep, its the next one, you'll have to wait 6 more years again for the next thing. And that's all regardless of whether or not the sentiment is even true or not. But with cloud services and streaming we are seeing the transition from game boxes to services taking place before our eyes. Disagree. Fine. I don't care. But don't twist my words.

Pretty much. I wish people would stop bringing it up.

Wouldn't 256 bit AVX2 only double what a standard Jaguar can do? Aren't they already 128 bit AVX units? So double that and you'd get up to 205 GFlops.
Yes, I'm pretty sure they are 128 bit now. Also, not all CPU flops are coming from them, so even if they are doubled, the overal flops rate of the CPU would not double, it should be less than 205 overall. I don't see how the overall quadrupling would happen by just increasing AVX units, but I might be missing something.

I called this early last year

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=36775430&postcount=676

& looking at the AMD road maps & reading about Heterogeneous Systems Architecture & other things in the road map has me thinking that Sony is building this whole SOC around the HSA including the HSA GPU that's in the road map for 2014.
