VGleaks: Orbis Unveiled! [Updated]

Level of customization seems to be higher in Durango. Not to mention more specific parts (DME, eSRAM, etc.) make it more complex and expensive to produce.

It was stated numerous times that quality gap between Microsoft's tools and Sony's tools no longer exists thanks to the effort of ICE Team. And if you read Durango leaks you should have noticed that Durango seems much more complicated to work with.

Not this shit again...

Agree with you, again I know my tech stuff and at this point I'm leaning to believe the efficiency stament come from some people's arses instead of actual facts...

*EDIT, i also think a display on the front which acts as a clock / time keeper for movie playback would be a welcome addition. (similar to what is shown in the image above)

I agree with you and I know my tech stuff, believe me. Nonetheless concensus is Durante is more efficient and I can't find why or from what perspective

Consensus of forum fanboys who are looking for "secret sauce" maybe, but in no way legitimate speculation.

You can make a damn good argument that Sony's high bandwidth, unified pool of memory is a huge efficiency upgrade over DDR3 with high OS overhead + 32MB of ESRam. Any time you segment memory pools you make life a little harder on a programmer. Any time you make those segmented memory pools actually run at different speeds you add yet another wrinkle to the logistics of programming for the system. More complex logistics in asset management is what makes coding hardware progressively more or less efficient, just like it does in any other business.

The efficiency gap only gets wider if Sony truly does have OpenGL as a native API, or if MS does include an additional layer between the metal and game execution due to their bloated OS, though both of those are only rumors.

There is no general consensus just certain members throwing this efficiency idea around based on existance of some mythical elements in Durango that no one knows anything about.

Sorry if I sounded too harsh, I thought that you are making one of those "more RAM is better than faster RAM" statements that we've been over thousands of times.

Yea seems like it, no new info has been released so it's just people's crazy opinions at this point..

No prob bro, english is not my first language so it's difficult to sometimes get to the point..

Regarding the PS4 controller, I only have three requests: make it bigger, change the analog stick placement, and change the d-pad style. They need to make controllers for us bigger folks. =p

Please no to the second 2 requests. I like my symmetric design, and an actually dpad.

That design above is horrible. Controller is bad and the console is ugly as sin and entirely impractical because it has to be stood up right.

Some basic principals i think sony will strive for.

I wounder if it is too much to hope for a more simplistic design without the unnecessary curves or protruding segments, like the PSX design. Or is having an simple rectangle box too vanilla for design now?

Gotta have some indentity, man.. c'mon.

And who is making elegant simple boxes anymore? Everyone seems to think that they need some unnecessary craziness to remain recognizable so it's just not done. I mean even look at cable boxes now.

That looks absolutely horrible.

Come on now. Simple? Sure. Basic? I could take that. Horrible? I mean if it's not to your taste that is one thing, but I've spent the last 6 or so years looking at the lumpy mess that is the ps3, and it can't get worse then that.

They probably just got annoyed at PC gamers shitting on the initial release of Crysis 2 and decided to say fuck it, throw everything at it to show off the next gen capabilities of the engine, then realized they hadn't even bothered to think of how they would port it to consoles so they trimmed everything last minute. I hope the SP is better or the beta is outdated or something.

Either that or they're preparing for a Crysis Maximum trilogy release next gen and didn't care about the current gen version.

People seem to be forgetting how that the console versions multiplayer looked significantly orse than the single player. I mean I'm not saying that the multi shots look great or anything (but the difference between the PS3 and 360 versions seem incredibly minimal) but it is a beta of the multiplayer here.

Just wondering... what happened to that 'Gigapixel' tech Sony were showing off a few years ago?

Did it go anywhere...? no reason to believe its in PS4... but it was neat.

Problem, for me at least, is sometimes when I'm moving the left stick to the right while moving the right stick to the left, my thumbs bump into each other, throwing my aim off when playing shooters.

The problems of a big handed man. Got a friend who has the same kind of problems who's favorite controller was the original xbox one, while it remains unusable to my tiny hands.

That's not an issue of the size of hand but rather the positioning of the thumb. You're supposed to use the pad of your thumb, not the ball/joint, to move the analog sticks. Using the ball/joint places a lot more fatigue on joint and the lower joints/muscles of your thumb.

Nevertheless i have seen quite a few people hold controllers in very weird ways - comfortable to them yet not ideal, sometimes even detrimental, for their own physiology

None of these designs could facilitate a cooling solution that would be efficient at acceptable noise levels. After experiencing current generations packaging solutions which where unacceptably loud, hot and produced astounding level of failure rates I'm going to have to say "No thanks" to any of these. Hopefully both MS and SONY have learned their lesson and will come up with something more reliable this time. If there is even a hint of another mass hardware failure debacle with any of them, you can count me out on that console.

Personally I wouldn't mind if they went with a slightly unusual form factor like a cube or a vertical design like the Silverstone FT03 mITX case that would allow use of big axial flow fans (much quieter at similar airflow level that centrifugal ones used on PS3). A nice straight intake with a dust filtered fan and a separate exhaust fan would be a dream come true. More practicality over slickness is something I wish for in the coming generation of hardware.

You're meant to use the pads of your thumbs on the analog sticks. I'm 6 foot 5 and have bear paws for hands and I have no problem with the DS3 and especially none with thumbs banging together.

Sadly the only device I have problems with is the 3DSXL, that gives me bad hand cramps. But yeah, thumb pads are the way to go for DS3 irrespective of hand size.

Yeah, let's alienate the old fans for the slight chance of gaining some new ones. That went well, when Insomniac did the same with Resistance 2, which resulted with poor R3 sales. I, for one, abhor asymmetrically placed sticks, and the same goes for concave sticks, which make my fingers hurt during longer playing sessions. The same can be said about the hard convex action buttons during longer plays.

I sometimes wonder if the placement of the left stick is a problem for those who prefer the Xbox pad, why doesn't the same apply to the right one? After all, you're using it far more in modern games, than the action buttons.

I dunno how they could make the D-pad better? The one in Xbox pad is awful. I'd be satisfied if they just improved the L2/R2 triggers, but kept their placement the same, as all four shoulder buttons need to be easily accessed simultaneously.

However, I might not have a problem with making the controller slightly bigger, although the current size is perfect for me. Just keep its shape similar, and don't make it noticeably more heavy to hold. The lightness of DualShock is one of its strengths, especially for people like me who sometimes play 5-9 hours in a row.

Anyone think that features like (non-proprietary) HDD upgrade, recharging controller etc will be there in Orbis?

Rechargeable controller is pretty much a given. End-user HDD upgrades... Hard to say. If Sony goes with one 500GB SKU, I'm expecting an internal drive that the user can't upgrade without voiding their warranty.

Same here.

Using the sticks any other way sounds ridiculous. Kinda like when people try to put both of their first two fingers on both hands on R1+R2 and L1+L2 at the same time. You're holding it wrong.

I loved being able to buy a cheap notebook hdd and put it in my PS3 versus buying some overpriced proprietary garbage. In fact, I hope Sony opens up the PS4 even more but I fear they will go the other way.

I see no reason why they would limit consumers from upgrading the hdd, sony wants you to buy horse armors to fill up your hdd. Unless they come up with good ol' x360 hdd modules that cost arms and legs.

Works well with fast-paced games like SSX, WipEout HD, and ME3 multiplayer.

Not really, no. One big assumption would be saying Microsoft were to do that.
That'd be a bigger assumption :D

Why do you think rechargeable controller is a given? I havent seen much rumors/leaks on the controller side.

+1

I loved some of the aspects that Sony left open in the PS3. I just think we were lucky.

Don't see how having one SKU limits that ability. Especially since all games will most likely be available via digital download on the PS Store, meaning that you can have your entire library straight on your hard drive. I don't see them limiting your ability to swap out the 500gb drive for a 1tb or larger one.

I've never had any serious issues with either the 360 pad or the PS3 pad. They both work well for me and if they both remained mostly the same I'd be fine, if they incorporate some aspects of the other, I'd be fine.

For me, I prefer the shape of the Xbox 360 controller but stick placement works for me either way, symmetrical or asymmetrical. The PS3 dpad is far superior to the Xbox 360 dpad but I really prefer the Genesis 6 button dpad over every other dpad I've used and wished it was implemented that way in all controllers. I prefer R1 and L1 to the bumpers on the 360 pad. I prefer the resistance of the analog sticks on the 360 pad but the feel of the rubber material on the Dualshock sticks. Triggers on the 360 are much much better than the triggers on the Dualshock 3. I don't have any major preference when it comes to the face buttons.

Both controllers do the job for me, so I don't see a need for a major overhaul of either but they could both use some minor tweaks.
