Iwata implies he may resign over poor business performance

Wasn't it Shigeru Miyamoto's insistence on cartridges on the Nintendo 64 that drove the third party publishers away? Once SONY came into the picture, that brief Nintendo exodus created a new userbase away from Nintendo. Things have never been the same since.

I thought that was more of a Nintendo thing since they hate to pay licence fees for any kind of tech they use. Still to this day Nintendo consoles don't play DVD or Blu-Ray movies.

Iwata needs to man the fuck up.

1. Sack Reggie and get someone who knows games to take over. Send that assclown back to MTV and take his stinkin TVii and Wii bullshit with him.

2. Sideline Miyamoto. Looks like this has already happened and the guy has been moved to small projects. Nintendo has stagnated. He's the John Cena of Nintendo, keeping the new talent down and stealing the limelight and glory.

3. Release some fucking games dickheads. It's not brain science! Nintendo has the largest gang of developers around. They need to start working to 2 year schedules. Not as if they are releasing content loaded games these days.

Do it now Iwata and stop apologising. Less jaw jaw. More War War.

...

(...well, I can agree with #2...)

Look at this idiot. Sack him now Iwata before he takes your company down!

Yamauchi also did absolutely nothing to harbor third party relationships. We would never see any of these "cross" games if Yamauchi were still at the helm.

No, but they could have used compact disc technology with the N64 and just not given it the ability to play CD's, similar to they did with DVD's on the Wii and Blu-ray's on Wii U.

Guys...you don't believe me but Miyamoto recently more or less admitted to burying the F-Zero series because "there is no where else to take it".

Like Wii-Fit has depth!

What Nintendo REALLY needs to do is give Nintendo of America some authority. Right now they're just a mouthpiece for whatever Japan says. They don't even get the final say if they can bring a game over or not; Japan can override them.

Give Nintendo of America real roles and responsibilities. Make them responsible for courting Western developers, for enticing them. Do SOMETHING.

The only thing NoA will do is not localize the games we want

Maybe. There's only one way to be sure and that's if Iwata's ass goes through the door.

As a Nintendo fan I would be so excited about that. As it stands, we have some great games on the horizon, even if it's been a bleak few months. If Iwata goes and Nintendo tries to get into the tech race again, I'm afraid they may fail miserably.

Well, it sold like shit even though F-Zero GX has been one of the best racers at it's time. So yeah, there's nothing you could do with this IP, blame shizophrenic ,,core'' gamers that cry for it now, but apparently didn't care enough to buy the games regardless back then.

I can't argue with this.

miyamoto has really been out of touch with the gaming population since Pikmin.

I just wish he wasn't so bad at it. Honestly, whether you're approaching a thread trying to be a Nintendo apologist or a harsh critic, I'm convinced that his posts are every bit as embarrassing to read.

I consider mysef a Nintendo kid. In school I would argue the SNES was better than the MD till the cows came home! It makes me sad that Nintendo has lost it's way.

Iwata says the right things and I believe his heart is in the right place but he needs to start listening and promoting the new blood. It's no surprise that Tokyo EAD appears to be their best internal devco and get Nintendo.

The old guard seem to have lost the plot...just look at the new Yoshi. More Story than Island I bet...

the man saw what the guys were doing to 3d and 2d mario and told them to make them more difficult.

he saw the awful mess super paper mario was and demanded intsys actually make a game next time.

guy knows his shit.

I agree with all these points to varying extents, but the 3rd point is especially true.

Does anyone know how many developers Nintendo has? 1,000? 1,500?

This myth is still a thing? It wouldn't make sense for Japan to not allow NoA releasing games they are fine with bringing out in Europe over the whole generation. It's clearly an issue coming from America.

It's a 50/50 chance. The next cutting edge Nintendo console could blow all doors and become the next PS2 seller.

And even if things don't go well at least we'll be treated to Nintendo games looking like this.

Totally worth the risk.

You know who would be perfect? Phil Harrison. At the very least instead of Reggie's who's just a PR mouthpiece rather clueless about games. He could be a decent replacement for Iwata.

Super Metroid. One of the greatest games ever made.

Since then we had nothing for nearly 10 years and then the series got absolutely raped senseless with 2 GBA games that lacked the great level design and 3 cookie cutter western FPS games in quick succession. Completely ruining the special aura that Metroid had.

They can never take Super Metroid from me but they've really tarnished the Series, much like Square has with Final Fantasy!

The less said with farming it out to Team Ninja the better!

Shameful treatment of a legendary series.

what is this nonsense.

the GBA games are on the same level. the nostalgia glasses are strong here. damn...

If you think the board at Nintendo would someone in charge of the company who isn't Japanese, you've got another thing coming.

No way.

Super Metroid is leagues ahead, it's not even funny!

But yes, Reggie must go. I'm glad we have a faceless Nintendo of Europe that makes nothing but awesome decisions.

Only recently though. For decades NoE was terrible. These last few years they have really surprised me though.

50mhz VC games is a crime though.

NSMB is the biggest joke.

A 2D mario would sell reardless of content...old Nintendo would still make sure we get a game that is progressive and fucking awesome! Not a cookie cutter shovelware coaster.

I knew this thread had gotten to be ridiculous, but the bolded shows that we've gone into flat out silly-season.

Carry on.

Not at all. Miyamoto looked (not played) the Mario Galaxy demonstration and advised the team to make the life bar smaller. Miyamoto didn't actually tell the team to make the game more difficult, just to shrink the damn life bar. The team balanced the damage taken to reflect on the smaller bar.

Miyamoto also completely sabotaged Steel Diver from being a real game according to the EAD director. The director wanted more content and stages, but Miyamoto said "nah, its good".

I think Miyamoto should be designing arcade style games on the e-shop himself, and let the new generation do their thing.

That second gif looks like Demons Souls to me. What am I supposed to be impressed by? Particles of ash?

Seriously, if anyone cares about the Nintendo games, their art styles are gonna do just fine with the current level of power. And even X looks fine too, for an open world game (- but I aint gonna drop the gif).

I'm a big fan of Miyamoto but one man should not have that much influence on an entire company's game development.

I honestly think Nintendo black listed CD technology from their hardware altogether out of spite of Sony. When they did move to disc media, they went to Panasonic to co-develop everything. The original GameCube never used CD media or DVD media, it was their own proprietary mini disc format. The Wii avoided DVD playback altogether and the Wii-U isn't really classified as a Bly-Ray disc even though it shares similarities to that format. Nor does it support Blu-Ray movie playback. They really did avoid Sony's direct involvement when it came to Disc media. That's how bad the fallout from the SNES Playstation add on was.

No existing console would be able to run that, however I can't help to agree with you. I've said this time and time again, people are in for a really hard shock about diminished returns this new gen. The graphical enthusiast will nitpick and argue to death, and somehow will manage to be in awe of some new graphical effect, but the general people out there aren't going to see that much of a big jump.

Art direction is really going to play a big role with the new games, and I can safely say Zelda could easily beat both of those gifs, on WiiU hardware, hell Epic Yarn looks more interesting.

The demo had a huge ass polycount. Only natural because certain elements are tessellated.

But who cares if it has a high polycount if it looks like a PS3 game?

And I don't know what tessellation is, so unless they're going to start packing software glossaries with games, I can't even know what to be impressed by.

Pixar has great artstyle too. But I don't think their movies would be as well received if they looked like cheap PS1 games.

Artstyle and tech go hand in hand with each other.

I'm not arguing that tech isn't important to a degree. There's clearly a difference between a PS1 game and a PS3 game, and that's more than just graphical.

But specific to the gif posted of the demon and even of that wizard girl, to a lesser degree, those look like PS3 games to my untrained eye.

What do you mean "how"? I've seen PS3 games. If that fire monster thing was in Demon's Souls, my eye wouldn't be shocked. I can't break it down technically for you, but that's also precisely why I'm not impressed by the Unreal demo. Because I don't know what's going on behind the scenes, it just looks like another PS3 demo.

I'm more impressed by Watch Dogs than that tech demo. Seriously, go look at the start of the Watch Dogs demo. Looks awesome.

You need new eyes bro. This is what PS3 games actually look like:

The difference is night and day.

Edit: And that's a high budget game. The difference becomes bigger as you go down the budget chain.
