just saw lawless and zero dark thirty.

Lawless was pretty awesome, was hoping for tom hardy to kick more ass, but he was so great in it. All the brothers were.

Zero dark thirty was ok, the ending obviously was so intense, but leading up to it was just eh

"None of his work?

no El mariachi ?
no his scene on Four Room?
no The Faculty?
no Sin City?
no Planet Terror?
no Machete?"

If you ever watch Four Rooms and wonder man wtf this blows, just wait till the last half, The first 2 directors were picked from an alley or something and QT and RR show them whats up.

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters; IMAX 3D

What I like - Gemma Arterton's boobs, the music score

What I don't like - Everything

If I was teenager, I would probably love this shit but I don't.

You'll see a teenage wiping the sweat off of her boobs when she is unconscious .

Typeface - Documentary on Wood Type & press (and a rural town and its tourism, wut). It's good to see both the creators and the subjects are passionate about it, but it doesn't make for a very good doc **½
Lake Mungo - Decent Australian horror mockumentary that ultimately doesn't really go anywhere. It's very well acted and quite tense ***
Deliverance - It has some good man vs nature things going on, but it felt hollow. Reynolds was cool, Voight was good. Also cool night shots bro ***½

The Master: rather dissapointing. Sure, it looks completely brilliant and Phoenix is amazing. I was blown away the first hour. Then shit falls apart. It just goes nowhere.

Where'd you see this? It's not playing anywhere near me and I'm dying to find it online, but can't.

Classic. The duelling banjos (well guitar and banjo), "Squeal like a pig!" and great photography. Saw it when I was 11 and left a big impression on me.

Saw Dredd. Not bad considering its budget and Samsara which was amazing. Wish it were longer though.

Nobody has seen Movie 43 yet? I'm pretty sure it is total and utter shit so, really, I hope no one ever sees it.

I saw Safety Not Guaranteed last night and absolutely loved it. One of the best movies I have seen in a while. Arnau was the best character in the movie. His line about Storm Troopers not knowing about lasers or time travel because they were blue collar workers was the best line in the movie. I just wish they had resolved what happened with the girl that the reporter went to hook up with.

Wish we had a Once Upon a Time in Anatolia discussion thread. Watched it last night and my mind is racing with various theories as to what really happened... such an ambiguous movie.

So GAF, what to watch tonight?

- The last of the mohicans
- The fifth element
- Jaws
- Death Proof

What should I go for tonight?

Full Metal Jacket

4.5/5

Could easily be a 5 (which I reserve for my personal favorites) after some more viewings. Time will tell.

Full Metal Jacket gets way too much hate because of its second half. Which isn't a second half in any capacity. The Vietnam section is two thirds of a whole movie, and really drives home the theme of what it means to become a killing machine.

I agree. I think it's because the film starts out comical but that erodes after time as the horrors of war are pushed upon us. Rightfully so, I believe.
Leonard's suicide is a great segway into all of that.

Leonard's suicide is a great segway into all of that.

If anything the darkest part of the movie is the whole segment up until
the suicide, some of that stuff is hard to watch (even if it there is comedy to it)
. The beginning reflects with the latter portion of the film.

Hiroshima mon amour was pretty great. It captures a interesting perspective on the nature of memory and how our past histories affect us, there's also a interesting symbolic connection in regards to the setting, especially how it relates to that last piece of dialogue at the end. I don't think I found it to be as entertaining as Last Year at Marienbad though, but this definitely hit me more on a personal emotional level.

I bought the God Father Blu-Ray pack, I'm currently in the middle of the second film and have never seen any of them. They are slow, but addicting.

I'm surprised you found Last Year at Marienbad more entertaining than Hiroshima Mon Amour. I love aspects of Last year but on the whole it's rather repetitive and dull. It is incredibly well shot, acted, and presented but it dawns thin considering its length. I still recommend it to everyone though, its great to watch with a glass of wine.

The repetitiveness of Last Year at Marienbad is actually what I love about the film. It's rather hypnotic and unsettling the way it's executed. Amusingly enough when I first started Hiroshima Mon Amour, during the first 15-20 minutes, I had this assumption that the whole film would be like that for the entire duration, was pretty surprised when that turned out to be not the case.

Well, we can discuss it here...

I doubt the rest of GAF holds more than a modicum of interest in it, so said thread would likely just flop spectacularly.

Incredible film, let's discuss.

The
elusiveness of truth
being one of the main themes of the film, it might be silly to even attempt to figure out exactly how
the murder
played out... but here goes nothing:

Personally, I've been wrestling with the idea of Kenan as a murderer (he came off as deeply sad and decent in the way he interacted with others, namely the doctor). At first I figured he'd accidentally killed Yasar in self-defense when the latter became violent upon learning about the kid... but the movie later hints that Yasar was buried alive. That doesn't jive with the seemingly-sensitive soul that Kenan is being presented as. One of the crazy theories I came up with was that Gülnaz (Yasar's wife) somehow put Yasar into a deep, coma-like sleep, to the point where he looked dead... perhaps using a drug of some kind. Then asked Kenan to bury the "dead body", resulting in Yasar waking up six feet under.

But obviously that concept is riddled with holes... so I dunno. What do you guys think?

  1. Django Unchained 4/5
  2. Zero Dark Thirty 4/5
  3. Lincoln 3/5
  4. Warm Bodies 3/5
  5. Les Misérables 3/5
  6. Gangster Squad 2/5

If, like me, you can get a free ticket for Warm Bodies then I heartily recommend it. If, unlike me, you cannot get a free ticket for Warm Bodies then you might as well see it if you have a few hours spare. It's enjoyable enough - quite funny if nothing else. Mind you, I can't believe we're still doing the "You live your life just like a zombie!" thing 35 years after Dawn of the Dead, though I suppose there's at least something of a twist on it.

Next up: Wreck-It Ralph. If my cinema isn't playing it after all this time, I'm throwing a fit.

Zero Dark Thirty

I really liked it. The film knows the whole time what every single person watching it wants to see; the raid on bin Laden's compound. The build-up to it is great, and the actual "big moment" itself within the raid plays out exactly like I pictured Bigelow would depict it; very matter-of-fact and straight-forward, which I appreciated. The performances all around are great as well.

And thank you to this movie for introducing me to Jessica Chastain. Hello....

Looper
An awesome time travel, Sci-fi action movie...that gets wrecked by a
mutant 8 year old?
Like, what the fuck was Rian Johnson thinking when he wrote the last third of the movie? It gets so lame and cheesy, but I really dug the stuff before that. I'd recommend the movie, but it's not incredible. 7/10 or so

Soloman Kane - Actually not that bad all things considered. Some parts were a little cheesy, and the CGI was a little lackluster(not much of it so it is easy to overlook), but it did spark my interest in the Robert E. Howard stories this is based on. So that is always a plus.

The Last Stand - Come on, it's Arnold. Of course it is awesome.

Finally saw End of Watch. Really liked it. My buddy who is a cop in a big city said they got the banter down really well.

I know it was just a movie, but it did make me think being a cop in a city like LA would be fucking scary lol.
For the ending
I fully expected something like that to happen, but it still hit pretty hard. It was just so unceremonious and brutal. Even though I was pretty happy to see their backup gun down the assassins, it did seem like it was thrown in there last second just to take the edge off an otherwise downer of a scene. And I thought the little flashback story at the very end was a nice touch.
Movie kicked ass, did not disappoint.

Saw Batman Returns yesterday.
Some things better stay in your childhood memory, is all i'll say.

Catwoman and Penguin were boss though, easily the best part of the movie.
I was kind of baffled how many obvious continuity errors and such there were, like they didn't give a fuck.

Loved it when I first saw it. Gave it a second viewing and I really didn't like it as much.
What if Sara was simply pregnant with the Rainmaker so we didn't have to deal with the kid at all? That's just off the top of the head, too. I'm sure there were ways to modify the story to eject Sid, or at least the need for him, altogether.

What's wrong with the pack? I bought this on BF but have yet to watch them. I hope your angry because of a hate for pt. III. I've never seen pt. iii and never plan to.

you've got me worried I bought a shitty transfer or somethin'

The dude stopped in the middle of the film to post on GAF.
