EVO 2K13 Player's Choice: Donate money to breast cancer and get your favorite game in

can't wait for someone to play halo at mlg where they discover that you can kill someone then exploit into an unreachable part of the map and win the match by staying there

all's fair, it's in the game

No, that would definitely result in a disqualification. Making the game unplayable is banned in any competitive game by default.

Planking, even when done perfectly, doesn't make the game unplayable, but it comes close, hence the limit.

what part of "planking" is a glitch as opposed to bad design by a developer who publicly took up a position against competition, complexity, and depth?

Hm, if I donate to Skullgirls, what goodies can I get?

For $15 minimum, you can be entered in a raffle for a special Skullgirls stick.
For $50, 1 of the VAs will send you a personal voicemail.
For $200, Christina Vee, Kaiji Tang, or Erin Fitzgerald will give you 1 hour of VO lessons.
For $300, Kyle Hebert will do the same.
For $1000, Wendee Lee will do it.
There's also an auction for an artbook signed by everybody.

I won't be able to watch if the Skullgirls crew start slicing off fingers to get people to donate and still lose by like 50 bucks.

EDIT: Why play Brawl over Melee? If not Melee, why play Brawl over a modded Brawl?

$15= Stick raffle that includes steam keys for Half minute hero

$20= http://personasama.tumblr.com/, personal sketches of whatever you want from Persona who worked on Skullgirls

$50= Personal messages from VAs

$200.00= "will get an acting consultation from Cristina Vee and ... the other guy who's awesome."

$300.00= "will get an acting consultation from the voice of Gohan in DBZ (only for the first 12 who apply!)"

$1000= Personal 1 hour VA coaching session with Wendy Lee(American voice of Fay Valentine from Cowboy Bebop)

I'm not clear on the rules for the artbook which is definitely the most high premium of all.

Uncle Hamster in with my McDonald's overtime pay, woo baby!

So who is ready for the shitstorm after the donation drive ends and it's even remotely close?

Going to be some bad feels going around I think. Especially if a game snipes like 20k at the last second or something and wins.

Still think SSBM is going to win though.

Why play SSF4 over ST or 3rdStrike? Why play UMvC3 over MvC2?

I agree 100% but we're trying to argue within the weird framework that has been created by Serious Smash Gamers over the course of a decade lol

My point was less about glitches and more about how it takes an already camp heavy game and completely shuts it down even more to the point that the whole point of the game and metagame (knocking another player out of the screen) is invalidated, benefiting absolutely nobody.

As far as I can tell, the planking stuff is the only thing on there that's a rule against defensive play. If you're referring to the stalling rule, there's a difference between "playing defensively" and "making the game unplayable." The latter is always banned in every other game, so...
You were saying the rules were similar to Melee's. Melee doesn't have any of these rules, nor does it require them.

To more clearly answer your earlier question, Melee finds Brawl rules depressing because it requires all this stitching together to resemble a competent fighter, and even with all this it still is a slower less hype game.

Oh, and there was the whole Brawl killing Melee's momentum in tournament play just cause it was new. Not gonna get over that salt til... well... perhaps tonight? Melee returning to EVO would soothe things.
Olimar is one of those characters and he's second on the tier list lol.
A character that isn't viable when the game is played without a very restrictive ruleset is second on the tier list.

What's your point?

I'm sure there are plenty of characters who can be number two on the tier list if planking is allowed. Maybe some characters would be discovered who do especially well against it and take his place?

Or we could just ban it lol.
Whether it's a glitch or not is irrelevant when it comes to this issue, actually.

It's just design that players don't like so they made rules against it.

I'd make a rule against tripping if I could.

The conversation started by asking me why I found Brawl's ruleset depressing as a Melee player. This is worded more perfectly than I could have done myself as a response to that question, thank you. :)

Being a member of both the Smash community and the regular FGC community, there is literally no difference between the two. The "Super Smash Gamers" have the exact same mindset as the "Super Street Fighter" and "Super King of Fighters" players when it comes to this kind of stuff. People just give them flak because Smash is not a conventional fighting game.

For instance, you can't just use the default settings for playing the game on a competitive level; most games would be determined by luck on item spawns. It just wouldn't work. Yet people who don't play Smash believe the game would benefit from it and assume that it hasn't already been extensively tested (which it has, by the way) because the Smash community is run by a bunch of people who don't know a thing about competitive fighting games. >_>

This is what I'm thinking...

Watching both streams, both Melee and SG deserve the spot... If anything else at least make SG as a side tourney if they don't make it...
Anyone can make a side tournament with the will and it won't put Skullgirls on road to evo events. People are pushing hard because they know this. That and the research, of course.

Yeah, I mean these are two really big committed fans and players that will be awesome to see both of them there. It's awesome to see all the "big" actors and players on the streaming haha.

As someone who never plays fighters competitively, I can still tell there's an intensity in Melee not present in Brawl. Like they want to knock the other guy out before getting knocked out themselves. Brawl matches seem to have no urgency.

it's just funny and weird to me that there is a really large group of players that would rather cobble together some bizarre frankenstein ruleset instead of playing a better game

I hope Harada can make a difference about this... Seeing their work at Tekken, if they have even just a slight influence for the next smash, the game will be infinitely better...

EDIT: Poster above me enlightened me a bit...

Well, there's still that wobbling rule...

Anyways, Melee has my total support for getting into EVO despite the fact that I prefer Brawl over it.

There wasn't any. I just found it amusing. =P

It's just design that players don't like so they made rules against it.

To be honest, this isn't the first time something like this has happened in a fighting game. Wasn't there some sort of roll thing in CvS2 that got banned?

I'd make a rule against tripping if I could.
So would I, dude. So would I...
