Why is Nintendo chasing people who have no interests in games? Wii is their best selling console ever but let's be honest....how many of those new customers bought or are considering buying another Wii console ever again?

Nintendo failed at growing the market as it's shrunk since the Wii fad. No one wants most of the new stuff they pumped out, it was mostly garbage.

Did people seriously buy Wii Play for the new gameplay experience? They bought it for the wiimote. The bundling skew the facts. Wii-play has as much gameplay value as the superscope6 games! It's utter crap and some of the worst and most boring minigames ever!

Yes it does. Elitist is someone who believes his opnion or taste should be considered more than others. Games like wiifit or wii sports resort sold 20 to 30 million. Its clear what a company should pursue if they have the choice between wii sports and wave race.

Also it remains to be seen if they have failed to grow the market or not.

THQ made a killing on Udraw. Then they followed it up a year later and brankrupted the company as everyone had moved on.

Who is everyone? Everything points to sony making a high spec machine focused on their existing userbase again. Those people were going to buy ps4s sooner or later anyway. If its going to have mass appeal remains to be seen.

As for nintendo they have launched at a high price (nintendo had a sub 25000yen policy before that) and did not have software ready. Not for the nintendo fans and not for the casual crowd. We may see in a year if nintendo bet on the wrong crowd or not. Personally i think its better for them to try to chase the casuals rather than the few nintendo fans that still exist (who are, as pachter pointed out recently, very few in number but are very noisy)

I could be wrong, as I sometimes get global and NPD historic numbers mixed up, but at least in the US, I was fairly certain that PS2, Xbox, and the GameCube all put up better holiday numbers.

Yup.. Overpricing hardware by 50$ minimum. Not getting out first party heavy hitters sooner (well nsmbu and nintendo land is way better than pilot wings resort -as much as i love that game- and nintendogs and cats i guess), barren post launch lineup..

At least after march they will have a healthy lineup ( and january and february traditionally are weak months for everybody)

Chasing the wii audience worked, as it propelled the wii to heights that were unimaginable following the n64 and GameCube.

I don't care if Nintendo, MS, and Sony chase that fickle crowd, they just need balance to keep the people that do buy games happy on their console. Nintendo's mass audience wii games were fine for what they were, certainly better than some kinect bullshit, but they also put out a new donkey kong country, a new Zelda, two 3d Mario games, and a bunch of niche stuff for the core gamers.
