For those wondering why Edge would sign up for something like this, expect them to get something like the world exclusive reveal/first hands on of the Next Xbox in return.
that...that doesn't make a lick of sense.

Not if retailers don't bother stocking the Xbox games to begin with.
he's saying MS leaked this information to Edge to make things look bad, but in reality it won't be AS BAD. Kind of like the under promise and over-deliver. And because Edge is willing to take that hit microsoft will offer them exclusive information in return.EDGE is going far with this, leading me to believe that this is actually true.
For talking bad about Xbox?
What if MS gives them better profit margins on new games or hardware? Considering the next Xbox will have the option to be subsidized by a 2-3 year contract, that could be a good source of profit for retailers to consider.
Edge seems confident with their source of information and i just don't see them as the sort to risk their reputation recklessly.
Interesting times we live in...

A potential win for Microsoft if the price is lower than ps4 games. If they can keep the price at 50 bucks and ps4 are at 60 than ps4 is in trouble.

as someone who only buys used, and sells them afterwards, i want to share my 2 cents:
last game i bought was Hitman, the newest one. i bought it for 20 2 weeks after it released. now, some might say "well, the makes of the game just lost one sale"...
...false.
had i not crossed paths with a dude selling the game for 20, i wouldn't even buy it in the first place. how can they lose a sale they never had?
needless to say, there are many more like me. also needless say is the fact that i won't support any system that doesn't allow the resale of games.
It's Microsoft we're talking about.
Not Sega in the 90's. Do you really believe retailers will cut Ms off?

In politics this is known as preparing the ground.
This is a controlled leak of information from MS to Edge, the purpose is to put a ghastly idea out there that people deem unpalatable and then when MS announce much less draconian measures (such as mandatory online passes/activation codes at $10-15 for used games) people are more willing to accept it.
There is absolutely no way MS launch a box with no second hand games and always online DRM if they are not 110% sure that Sony are also doing it.
It's possible. Maybe MS did "sell their souls" to get more exclusives. But the idea that big publishers would keep big games away from the other big competitor is crazy talk.
It's looking to me like the stars are aligning for Sony and even many in the media are starting to favor them again. Don't let us down, that is all I have to say.
Any more?

One of the many conspiracy theories here but honestly, I can completely buy MS being their source here. Why else be so confident?
If nobody buys the next xbox... maybe not.Cold this play in Microsoft favor though? Could this entice publichers to release more exclusive games on the next Xbox?

last game i bought was Hitman, the newest one. i bought it for 20€ 2 weeks after it released. now, some might say "well, the makes of the game just lost one sale"...
...false.
had i not crossed paths with a dude selling the game for 20€, i wouldn't even buy it in the first place. how can they lose a sale they never had?

This is a fair point. When's the last time a gamestop had a large selection PC games? You think a company that exists due to second hand sales will support a console that blocks them?
You think they will encourage sales of a device that destroys their business?
I do not.
yeah but he talks alot of shit. You know who would LOVE that to be true though? EA and Dice. Battlefield on both consoles ---> becomes the bigger game.Bobby Kotick already threatened to stop supporting Sony once this generation.
the idea is that they leak this bad info, but the reality of the situation is not as bad, so people have a "ohh so it's not AS BAD as before". Still bad just not as bad as maybe this article points out, so it makes the bad news more palatable. What does MS accomplish by leaking supposedly false bad news of this type?
that...that doesn't make a lick of sense.
I have similar buying habits with games as well but it still does the makers of the game zero benifit when you buy that game used. If games were less desirable in a no used game market publishers could lower price to sell them and benifit from that sale. I think a steamesque service is the best solution.as someone who only buys used, and sells them afterwards, i want to share my 2 cents:

Yeah because it blocks their means to be profitable. Game stores make more from used game sales and a console that blocks them is directly against them. It's Microsoft we're talking about.
Not Sega in the 90's. Do you really believe retailers will cut Ms off?
So the ones that are most likely to buy used won't care? Because it damn sure isn't the GAF/internet message board demographic making used games so profitable for Gamestop.
Heh, I don't know that I'd call this brave since they've been able to get customers to rationalize putting online play and other already paid for services behind a paywall, and paying exorbitant markups on otherwise heavily commoditized components like HDDs, for seven years and counting. MS has found a segment of the market that seems willing to rationalize just about any arbitrary premium if it's marketed right and if this rumor proves true, it suggests not bravery but complacency to just stick with that segment. They're welcome to it.EDGE said:You’ve got to admire Microsoft’s bravery...
if microsoft, the current preferred bed-friend of all big western publishers, don't allow second hand resale, there is zero chance sony won't have to do the same. EA and activision will have no qualms with dreamcasting the PS4 in a second; and they'll have an infinite amount of fabricated sales data to support the idea that it would be an ultimately profitable move. why support a rival on the outset of a generation to the machine which does everything you ask for?
it will happen to the PS4 too, it's written in the patents.
this is an idea you're going to have to get comfortable with.

I bet the movie/music industry is kicking themselves in the butt for not thinking of this.

Welp that guy isn't gonna last long. Been seeing him everywhere acting like Microsoft's PR team
How could the music industry even implement something like this?
I think that is a far from the truth as you can get. They run a story which subtly mentions suppressed used games in Microsoft's next console which then proceeds to be reblogged, posted, speculated and analyzed in loads of different places and instead of letting the dust settle for a few days within hours they post a follow up staunchly backing up their claims with how confident they are. If this does blow up they are going to look incredible amateur. No one has forced EDGE's hand and if it is a bad source it is their responsibility as a news outlet to make sure they don't put out false or misleading information without at least some basic fact checking. I wonder what GameStop would say, after having close to 7% knocked off their share price due to this story, if it goes belly-up?
Tell that to Micheal Patcher who seems to still catch headlines everywhere even though he is almost considered a joke now. Also it's not too much of a risk, if it ends up wrong they can just blame it on a bad source and move on.
What a trip.Right now, there seems to be a subtle role reversal happening; Microsofts stricter, more complex box aspires to be the complete entertainment superhub PS3 was once designed to be. Sonys PlayStation 4 is more PC-like and developer-friendly, as Xbox once was.
that of course is what makes it a conspiracy theory at this point. Would they be willing to put their credibility on the line for traffic? In this day and age who knows. If that is the case, then I am never reading anything from EDGE ever again. Would be pretty stupid of them to not only hang themselves out like this for Microsoft, but to come right back with a solidifying back-up article to reinforce the previous one.
They are not affiliated with Microsoft, why would they sacrifice themselves and their future credibility in order to make the truth more palatable in the end? It would take some straight-up blind fanboyism to agree to throwing themselves on the fire for Microsoft like that. I would hate to think they would risk their own credibility in such a fashion, but time will indeed tell the tale.
I bet the movie/music industry is kicking themselves in the butt for not thinking of this.
There exists this magical service called Gamefly that is kind of like a Netflix of videogames. How many Netflix subscribers do you think have bought movies in the past 5 years?
How could the music industry even implement something like this?
