Asahi: PlayStation 4 to be over 40,000 yen

$400 seems really good but kinda low considering the good Wii U model is $350 and this machine is going to be much more powerful. I say closer to $500

At the time the Yen was at historic highs iirc. BoJ has been trying to rectify that of late and as of today 100 yen = 1.07 dollars i.e. getting back to "normal."

Also I expect the rest of the world will subsidise the US.

Yup, at $399/€399/£349 the EU versions are slightly more expensive than the US version. In the UK by £25 and on the continent by about €10. Using today's exchange rates. There is a good chance that the Euro will continue to strengthen against the Yen and Dollar so that €399 could become €349 if they want to go in for the kill.

Give me a bundle that includes a headset, a game and bigger HDD plus a couple of free months of PS+ and I will pay 500.

Will still wait until I can get second hand for £200 with games. But I think this will translate to 450$ for normal SKU.

400 is exactly expected. PS3 and 360 are still 300 so not surprised at all. It's crazy how 400 was an unheard of number for successful consoles seven years ago.

In for 400.

Should be 350-400 max they aren't innovating this time around, no new magical disc format to entice people to get it at a premium.

$400 would be a good price in the US(though I could see them going $450 with this) but this looks like it could be bad in a lot of other regions. If its going to be 13750+($147+) yen more expensive than the closest device in Japan that could be dangerous early along in the console's life.

I don't trust these reaccions.

The same happened whe the vita price was announced and look how that turn out.

Gamers are very frickle.

First off you're assuming that smartphones and tablets are substitute goods with consoles when that really isn't the case. The experience offered by consoles are drastically different. You could make a valid argument for handhelds but that's like saying the PC market is going to die off because of consoles. There is very little overlap marketwise for consoles and tablets.

no, that is not my assumption. my assumption is that tablets and smartphones exist in a category in priority - hence my "required to own" comment - to expenses like consoles. they're completely different, more optional, experiences to the average consumer.

The 'H' stands for hentai.
$400-450 is the ideal price, $500 is a bit pricy and I would definitely wait a year or two for the library to fill out a bit.

$449 is the more realistic price if you asked me, especially since the article say " over 40,000 yen".

449/499 SKUs since I doubt Sony breaks the 500 dollar mark. Despite how much people pay for iPads, people obviously see more utility with those devices than with a games console.

Systems (from Sony, at least) usually cost more in Japan than in the US. I am expecting $400 over here, so fucking sweet.

I'd guess £350-ish for UK? If it's £400 it's going to crater like PS3 did; that's only £25 less than that system was at launch. I said £299 was my barrier, and I'm sticking to it.

We're are in recession and Sony got the cost reduced PS3 out in six months flat for £299.

The only price point I'm certain it won't be is $599. Too much negative stigma behind that number. $449 for basic, $499 for deluxe sounds right in the US

I find it hard to believe that there will be one SKU (and many price cuts throughout its life) considering the elasticity of HDD manufacturing costs.

How is MS and Sony going to address this? are they going to gradually add high capacity HDD's with their consoles?

Doesn't that drive up the total cost of manufacturing?

i wonder if it doesn't perform well at $399.99 that people will start complaining it was too expensive the whole time, much like the comparison to the vita's $249.99 reveal and the cries for a price drop just a few months after launch.

It's not low, the Wii U is just overpriced.

Overpriced in the sense that like Vita its more than what the market is willing to pay for or component cost?

Of course. I'm sure the economy will also be blamed.

GBP is too weak to support £299. GBPJPY needs to hit around 170 if we are going to get a £299 price point. I don't see it, the pound has been taking hits all the way since December and there has been a semi-official campaign from the BoE to keep the pound weak in order to support UK industry vs Germany. If anything we're heading for parity with the Euro again at this rate.
