I remember a forum years ago (maybe tom's hardware or hardocp?) where a dude pretended to have a wife, posted as said wife, and then posted how wife died in a horrible accident or something. came clean months later, IIRC.

so yeah, pretending to be a girl is small potatoes.

Short version of the story:

A guy pretended to be a girl named "Brianna Haskins" across numerous forums over almost 15 years. TeamXbox.com and a smaller forum called WeCraveGames.com being the 2 I posted at.. but they had tons of posts all over the place.

Beyond simply pretending to be a girl, this person also invented multiple alt accounts.. these alt accounts would at times have conversations with the main fake girl account.

"Tee hee, I'm a model, and I live with Brianna Haskins" type stuff.

One forum, that I think is gone, was so fooled that even after mounting evidence the admin provided that the person had multiple accounts.. not even bothering to use proxies.. the forum attacked the ADMIN for somehow violating the "poor girls" privacy and.. checking IPs on accounts.

These fake accounts at times seemed to be mimicking the fake personalities of a fake cartoon "Girl Pop Band" that the guy had invented.

The fake pop band has it's own MySpace, and Facebook.. and has members from all over the world, just like the fake accounts the guy would create.

He'd talk like he was australian on one account, speak in Engrish on another account because the girl was supposedly Japanese, and then spoke perfect English on his main account, which was supposed to be an American girl who had moved to Puerto Rico.

I'd suspected it was a guy for YEARS.. because he would go into things like babe threads and be like "Tee hee, I have those panites." And then act all pissed and feminist when someone would ask "her" for pictures. "OMG I can't believe you'd ask me for pictures!"

They did have a fake Facebook and Myspace for "Brianna Haskins" and of course eventually I traced all pictures they'd posted to other accounts on the web.

For one fake account he was stealing pictures from a girls profile, who I contacted.. she responded and of course verified it wasn't her posting on gaming forums.

You know, I never actually thought about posters that I actually like, but there are certainly a few that grate on my nerves that I won't name.

Off the top of my head, posters who's posts I enjoy reading:

Quite a few others that I know I'm missing out on. To be honest, I enjoy most of the posters here, with only a handful that annoy me or I outright have a strong dislike for.
 
I've probably posted in this thread before, but what the hell, times change.

Nafe - Pretty insightful and always has something meaningful to say. We share similar tastes in games and shows as well, which is pretty surprising knowing myself.

Gravijah - He's a weirdo, but he's usually always there for me to talk to if I ever need it. I don't know how he puts up with me.

Boney - I don't know who this girl is.

Uraizen - I think he's a stalker. A rather lewd one too. Or maybe not. A nice guy though, even if his tastes are stupid.

Watanabe Kazuma - Will probably kill me if I turn my back to them. Fun to talk to though!

Dr.Palutena - Ok, I know she's a stalker, though that's ok, since she's really nice.

Emitan - She keeps sending me lewd drawings, but I just can't say no. Not that I'd want to anyways.

Kandrick - The lovable communist.

Regulus Tera - I watched Gunbuster already, get off my back!

And the rest of K-ONGAF and some PokeGAF. I'd mention more by name, but the list would get pretty long. They know who they are anyways.

It's a combination of several factors at the end, be it wording, discussions of interest and visual sets (avatars, signatures). Became capable of "deciphering" the gender of the people I interact with on a regular basis over years of participation in forums, and not just this right one.
 
Years ago when I'd lurk, Count Dookake used to annoy the hell out of me.

Once I saw his actual opinion on real, pressing issues, my perspective totally changed. Now he's one of my favorites.

Hmm...Not really the same thing I was thinking to be honest. I do think the way some girl's post gives you a greater impression that they are female, but it is not simply to do with how they word things, it is more to do with the content of their posts. Devo for instance is incredibly passionate about women's rights and equality, to the point where it's hard to believe she is anything other than female. lol

It is not so much the way they write things, but what they write.

I've been called a he many times, and while I don't necessarily like it, it's also not worth the effort of correction. Mostly because what follows is disbelief and a demand for pictures to prove it. Often when I have corrected people using the wrong gender I've been accused of trying to bring too much attention to the fact that I'm a woman.

If someone says they are a woman, and request female pronouns to be used, I'm just not sure why it matters so much to people if they are or not?

Something similar happened to a football player recently right? People got issues.

Yeah. None of it really matters at the end of the day. The only time it should really be questioned is if they start asking other girls really private questions or start fishing for photos.

that reminds me, girl gaf, when I pm'd you for pictures of your breasts, I was totally asking for my wife and promise not to look at them. She just wanted to make sure her own were normal, that's all.

Saw that happening on the forum I was a regular of before this one, word for word. Really embarrassing. Note that the average age was younger than GAF's, like 20 while GAF's is 25+. Girls went as far as deleting their picture and requesting mods to remove all related posts.

Despite my statement earlier, I didn't mean that every girl posters has to go outta their way to prove they are actually a girl. If they say they are then I'll just take their word for it. I'm just saying, by default, everyone's a dude until stated otherwise.

People should be wary of that regardless. I can't imagine telling another woman something I wouldn't tell a guy.

The sentiment is still strong in many places though. It's something that we just have to put up with in male dominated areas of the internet, but it can be kind of tiring. Oddly enough, I don't see similar behavior in female dominated forums. They might assume everyone is a woman, but if someone says they are a guy they take it at face value.

Kevin, I doubt you'd know me but I posted on IGN Wii board 6 or 7 years ago (different username). I saw you around a lot and liked your posts for the most part. I lurk depression age and your threads too, it sucks you're going through so much. You wouldnt know me but i know you cause i didnt have an account here for so long. Don't base you self on stupid shit like how many people post in your threads. A fuck ton of people lurk but can't post.

Favorite poster by far Yoshichan. The diablo thread was epic.

2nd place goes to Chuckl3s. If I could just take this posters avatar home to meet the parents my life would be complete.
