Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate announced for Wii U/3DS, coming to West, no 3DS online

With the demo approaching I was wondering what the monster hunter vets would recommend for a beginner to the series regarding class. A class that would help learn the basic mechanics and help with the difficulty.

You can change "class" (weapon) anytime outside of a hunt. Typically people start with Sword 'n' Shield. You get to defend attacks, have relatively fast attacks, and can use items when you weapon is drawn (no other weapon can do that, i think.)

Tri was my first Monster Hunter, so I'm hardly a "pro" of the series, but...

One thing to keep in mind is that each weapon type handles differently and requires different tactics to make the most use of. With that in mind you can probably "learn" on just about anything as long as you have the patience to get your butt kicked for a while. For my own part, classes that make sense to me when you're first starting out would be the Sword and Shield (gives you mobility, not too much attack-delay to worry about timing out, and the ability to use items without sheathing your weapon which is handy if you're accustomed to popping potions often) or the Lance (high defensive capability so you can be a bit more methodical, good for learning monsters' attacks before you've worked out where/when to dodge on other weapons). I know other people that started and stuck with the Great Sword, although to maximize the use of that, you have to be pretty familiar with the way monsters move.

I have a 3DS but I have no intentions of getting a WiiU until like next year so I'll be getting the 3DS version first. Could I transfer all my data from the 3DS to the WiiU version when I do get the WiiU version down the line?

^Yes

Well we're assuming the demo is just two isolated fights with fixed weapons of different types, which means you're given a nice opportunity to test out the tools available and see what's most fun.

In general sword n shield is the easiest to start with, but you're not likely to stick with that and that alone. Better to learn a few different weapons. They may feel difficult at first but in terms of complexity it's not like you have to learn a lot of combos or anything, just get the basics down and feel how they physically work in battles. There are certain weapons that are considered better to kill with in certain situations but the only REAL advice you need is to try them out and decide what feels good, what's fun. If you need any tips on specific weapons the neogaf threads or youtube vids or other's explanations are available.

MH3U gives you one of every weapon type to start with so you can try them and upgrade what you like. I've played a few hundred hours of MH and really only used swords. I'll still start out with a Great Sword in MH3U but want to learn some new ones to add another layer to the game.

No reason to think you cant. It is a simple app on the 3DS and its built into the game on Wii U.

Also, I am a GS user mostly because i think they are the best looking weapons and it eventually became my main. As i joked many a times on tri online, Monster Hunter is about feeling and looking cool man.

Definitely true, I believe. In Tri, I started primarily with Lances, but secondarily started building up a few longswords to get the variety of a class with a bit more offensive mindset and greater mobility. The two complimented each other well for me, and it can be very interesting to see just how much your tactics change for a monster depending on your weapon. Later on I moved to Hammers as well and once again I found myself playing quite differently.

Just try out what looks interesting to you, see what feels more natural to play, there is no right or wrong to go for. I for one am really looking forward to trying out the Hunting Horn and I'm not really sure why.

switch axe is the ultimate weapon.

Only weapon you need! <3

Fine for solo play, a nightmare in multiplayer. Along with longsword users they were not fun to play with. You've gotta be really aware of your party's positioning when you do crazy upswings and that charge. Sadly, rarely anyone ever was :')
Resulted in some pretty hilarious deaths though.

I'd just like to add that while I enjoy using the switch ax from time to time, it can also be a pretty ignorant weapon when swinging in close quarters with other hunters. Also, if you're caught in that mad swing combo (achieved with simple button mashing), and your target falls asleep you run the risk of accidentally waking it, screwing your chances of sleep bombing. All in all, the switch axe requires just as much restraint or self control as it does planned attacks when hunting in groups and is a great starter weapon... but personally I don't believe it to be the best for finess and hunting etiquette..My picks are the GS and the LS, and Im openly jealous of anyone who's mastered Gunners and Hammers :) Im interested in picking up the hunting horn, I've got no idea how that works.
It's that shadowing, yo. Makes everything just look so good.
Ya, the shadowing is crazy... I spent as much time gazing at the shadows as I did everything else :)

WiiU ZombiU Bundle pre-ordered. MH3U pre-ordered. I cannot wait until the 21st. If there is a 30 use limit on the demo, I am going to tear it up quickly.

If someone's upswinging constantly they are doing it wrong. The upswing is not an effective use of the axe mode (except in a certain scenario, which will be elaborated on below).

However, if you are near a tail with a Switch Axe user around, you might end up getting launched. The upswing is great at reaching higher tails to cut.

The best methodology to the Switch Axe use is (it's hard to put this in words, easier to watch but...) in Axe mode, use the forward stabbing motion, the hook chop, and then the downward chop, then back to the the forward stab. Loop with that as much as you want. During a forward stab, you can convert it to the sword and slash away. With this, no one gets launched, tripped, and your damage output is pretty good.

The worst possible thing to do with the Switch Axe is that frenzied spin swing thing... it's only real use is stacking status damage (like Para on Barroth's axe)

Thanks for all the responses. The depth of this game excites me and frightens me at the same time! My body is not ready

It goes much deeper than you probably think it does too.

When you get into planning out how you will gem out your different armor sets for specific monsters and skill bonuses, then you will feel overwhelmed.

I sure was back in the Unite days. That thing had three games worth of content in it. Crazy.

No need to worry, though. It's complex but at the same time you don't have to worry about anything but what armor and weapons you're using, basically. You can take it from there and go crazy complex but at its core you can get into it just by getting good at fighting.

Boggles the mind to think there's roughly double (I think??) the content of Tri... I'm going to be blissfully lost in creating new and improved armor combos. Oh mah gawd, this games never coming out of my Wiiu!!!

Last night after playing Tri for over a year I found out that new weapon plans don't unlock as you progress, but only when you have the items to make them. v_v

Doesn't that defeat the whole point? Is Capcom that desperate for guide sales?

Well, it makes sense to only show you what you can create once you own an item that proves you have access to the monster rank that can fund it.

I for one dont want to see 2 pages of items i can't build too early. Makes the early build up sad.

Again, Unite was fucking crazy in this regard with all the color rank variants.

MH3G(/U) has those same ranks again.

If you just carve stuff you're gonna unlock most of it.

is it time to talk shop?

Well, the game should ostensibly know when you've beaten a monster and would then show you the plan after you've done so. Then you can tell what you need.

pretty much. i don't see how this has ever been an issue or required a physical guide.

you'll always need some basic materials that have a high-drop rate no matter how rare the other materials for a piece are. and you'll get those as you progress by killing/capturing. ;)

for all intents and purposes, it does.

I just remember that from stars 2-4 I didn't unlock anything new to make despite carving everything so I was basically still on the starter armor...

lol... don't knock that leather gear though...

You couldn't even make Jaggi equipment? It needs the most basic stuff!

Just all the Hunter's X stuff, iirc.

Would have been different if I knew I could work towards something. :P I figured I was just locked out.

Asinine design~

i don't even see how this is possible. if you carve a great jaggi hide or get it through a quest reward/carve, the smithy will automatically show you what armor can be made from it.

how can you play this game for 1 year and not see new armor show up in the forge? or rather, you did see it, but thought it unlocked due to some kind of "progress" through the quest ladder.

Edit- Hm.

Did Andrex just realize the list scrolls horizontally and not vertically?

No I just realized the game wants you to forge entirely new weapons/armor instead of buying base ones and upgrading them, lol. Dumb Goblin never got the yellow chat box saying he had new stuff to make either. :(

Glad I'm getting all the embarrassing noobness out of my system before Ultimate. :P

This franchise finds ways to make new noobs of us all nearly every time. It is part of what I love about it.

I realize though, through your epiphany, that I have almost always played the franchise with wiki (in some fashion) in hand for large parts of the game. Knowing where I am headed, what I am aspiring to collect etc. So much to do, thousands and thousands of hours to do it in...

Yeah didn't really serve its purpose, maybe they'll structure it more in future installments, but at least we got to see some more of that localised text.

If you want to see a MH noobie introduced to the series from the start, guided by someone who knows it, check the "My Fair Hunter" video podcast on youtube.

With games that have a steep learning curve ideally 2 people would review the game. One who is experienced with it so that they can tell others who are also fans if the game is worth it. A new player should also review it so they can tell people who want to get into the franchise how difficult it can be to learn to play.

This shit better have a 80+ Metacritic score.

I suspect it will, but I don't know by how much. The game is a lot lower on the bullshit scale than anything from the first and second generations, but at the same time, it will still punish people who go in with a hack and slash action game mentality.

As for me, I plan on finally getting that Lagiacrus kill with a Fishing Harpoon. One day, one day...

Rich can't play MH, lol.

Why is he reviewing the game again? And why is the true MH fan just making comments, instead of playing?

This shit better have a 80+ Metacritic score.

I think reviewers will be turned off by the steep difficulty curve. Anyways, I don't see Metacritic as a site that is worth anything. One thing Kotaku did right is the removal of review scores.

I was going to buy a Wii U for this game, but seeing as how I'm going to play a shit ton of the single player first I figured I can save a little bit by getting the 3DS version first.

Yea, I'm doing this too, though I will likely to buy a Wii U once uni is over.

think I may also cancel my Wii U pre-order. I have no plans to go online till I have put some serious time into single player mode.

No point on having the Wii U version collect dust.
