DF: Orbis vs Durango Spec Analysis

My quick hackjob;

Return of the fatty? It's short and fat, like ..

Dang, that's way too small :I * skeptic*

Well, Sony is a hardware company. Maybe they got bored with the stock build of the PS4 and had to unleash all of that pent up engineering on the design.

Got lot of room for it.

But I'm wondering will Sony go for slide/swing door, or suck-in or tray blu-ray slot?
I hope it's the former personally. Another point for simple, more robust design. Could argue that it makes it seem cheaper but these things make it look more like a game console to me for some reason and also it'll last longer.

I'm guessing it'll be a slot loader, like the PS3. It looks cool when you put a disk in and it's less moving parts to worry about breaking.

how does that compare to the Wii U?

edit: comparing this to the Wii U, this is actually smaller!

Orbis: 25cm deep x 14cm long x 10cm high vs
Wii U: 27cm deep x 17cm long x 4.5 cm high

Orbis is just two inches thicker, but not as wide or long! I seriously don't believe that!

Yeah, but it's as thick as a brick.

Like a ps2.

I don't want a fatass console. Give me something thin and sleek, akin to Sony's bluray players.

Or something similar to the size of the PS3 Slim (not the latest model).

In case anyone missed my edited post. Heres how it compares to the Wii U. Its overall smaller! Twice as thick(this thing is fat!), but its shorter and a not as wide.

I dont know if I believe this... does Wii U have an external PSU?

Yes.

Ever since it was confirmed there was no dedicated GPU, I assumed this thing would be fairly compact and low power. It's just an APU. The chip design is pretty simple, and manufactured on a small process. Nothing like launch ps3 or 360.

Seeing the fatness in some of these shots it's hard to picture this thing looking sleek.
If they're real then the dimensions are odd that's for sure. But I'd imagine the console would not just be a plain brick shape. Maybe concave on the sides or something.

Doubt it will have a shitty disk tray. I'd be really surprised if they didn't have a slot loading drive.

Just look at the Mac Mini:

Relative to the APUs on the market its far larger.

Wishful think but seeing how small it looks in fat PS3 form that artist posted, I could see it being priced lower than I thought.

How would it be smaller or small as the Wii U though? Even though its an APU, you would think the motherboard would be much larger. The CPU and GPU are much larger(how do they get smaller by just being in an APU?). I remember reading this is a pretty large APU. It has twice the amount of RAM, with lower density chips. 4x has many memory chips on the mobo with 4gb of DDR5?

Edit: What would the added thinkness help with? room wise? Not the Mobo. I would just think the bluray drive and the HDD. Are we forget about the huge HDD this thing is supposed to have?

I would guess that based on the designs of previous PlayStations, the PS4 will be wider than it is deep. With an asymmetrical disc slot. So the opposite of the WiiU, which is deeper than it is wide.

So the PS4 is likely to be:

25cm Width x 14cm Depth x 10cm Height

Agreed. Either way, the footprint is smaller. I wonder how many people saw that coming.

:D love me some slot loading drives.

If it is indeed just a brick with otherwise no unique shape, then there are some materials and things they can do to still make it look like a premium device and have its own character like all consoles have. I'm envisioning a cross between the Mac G4 Cube and the new Xperia phones/tablet. I'd make a mockup if I knew how. >_<

From a design perspective, it sounds awful.

I hope thuway's dimensions are completely and utterly wrong.

Ah well... 10 days till we find out.
