Destructoid: PS4 controller prototype & devkit photo, [Up: New Photo/Info In OP]

You can say the same for a 360 controller though. Just imagine pressing the bumpers to aim/fire instead of the triggers. The bumpers only require a short press to fully activate; it's all or nothing. The triggers require you to fully depress the button all the way down until it aim/fires. Same thing with the PS3 controller... except the PS3 triggers are mushier.

I can fire guns WAY faster with R1 than I can with the 360 trigger. In Black Ops 2, the FAL, which is semi automatic, I can fire that thing quick with R1. With the 360 trigger, it feels like I have to press "more" to shoot it at the same speed.

It was odd for me to switch from years of using RT to just tapping/pressing R1 in Battlefield 3 for instance, but it's nice I guess. I tried changing the triggers/shoulder buttons in some games and it didn't felt right on the DS3. Always felt curious about using the plastic "trigger" third party add-ons, were those good?

Battlefield 3 SKS feels great with rapid tapping.

Its all about what you are used to. Like I've said before I am so used to the way it is on 360 I can't imagine anything else. I've had a 360 since launch but only have had the PS3 since two black fridays ago.

I thought the face buttons were only pressure sensitive on PS2 (causing me major headaches in MGS2-3), are you sure PS3's were too?

Most definitely. I wouldn't be able to play GT otherwise, having pressure sensitive buttons for acceleration and brakes help immensely. Hopefully they keep them for the PS4.

I'm sure I could come to enjoy the R1/2 buttons more, but I don't really care at this point because as long as the controller is pretty much like the one we've seen, I'm probably sold. I just want to see some damn PS4 games!

The OP already points out this is not the case... face buttons will be digital on the PS4 controller (well, according to these dev controller specs, but looks like it would be a good bet). Not sure what is going to happen to the games that use them if there is backwards compatibility although someone mentioned the possibility of a DS3 still being supported on the PS4.

This has probably been discussed before, but what's with the light bar on top of the controller?

Is it motion control related?

Would be a bit bizarre having motion control on a dual shock...the form factor doesn't really work at all.

Its the move wand built into the controller. If that is the default controller, than the PS4 will probably come with the camera packed in.

Possible uses of touchpad:
------------------------------
- Purely gestural addition to normal playstyles, swipes and taps (not location specific)
- Navigation of planar space with matched cursor on screen

Possible uses of clickable touchscreen:
------------------------------
- Most natural gesture metaphor for taking a snapshot on what's on screen / share button.
- Menu selection during gesture sequences

Possible uses of adjusted triggers + sticks
------------------------------
- Getting console warrior manbabies to shut the fuck up

I was really hoping for a split controller, oh well. For a prototype this looks fine. Sticks look like a nice concave/convex compromise and the d-pad looks great.

But the move controller really needs to be something you hold in one hand, not two.

Imagine trying to play Sports Champions with an entire dual shock. Awkward and bulky. Needs to be split.

One thing that I'm interested to know. Do the journalists working at the bigger outlets like IGN have to pretend that they haven't seen multiple versions of the devkit already? There's sort of a veiled dance some of them are doing, obviously knowing more than they can let on, but not really committing to the illusion either.

I guess no one wants to comment on anything until an unknown source lets it out, then they can come out and confirm it and speak on it.

So like the original PS3 design, I was a bit shocked at first but it's growing on me pretty quickly.

This isn't even the final form though, so it can really only get better from here.

I hope they let people hold it and take comments at the reveal. The boomerang got a lot of bad press because they never let people feel how comfortable it was. Taking some comments about sticks, triggers, feel, etc could help them sort out some last minute changes before they send the final design out to devs.

removed the noise.

It's..... an interesting design. I'm wondering at the inclusion of the touchscreen though. Is it going to serve a practical purpose, or was it just something shoe-horned into the design to copy Nintendo and their niche-tastic controllers.

After that larger image was posted am I the only one who thinks the ports above the Ps4 devkit look like Gamecube controller ports? Apologies if this has been mentioned, haven't been able to follow every page of this thread.

TouchPAD not screen.

That technology again is TouchPAD.

Theres just something about that controller I don't like.

Maybe its the handles? It looks thicker. Maybe its the top of the controller? Dunno, its something for me.

Already been mentioned:

is there a nintendo wii dev kit standing on the PS4 dev kit?

do we know where the image is from? do we know any PS3 developers that worked on wii games that could work on PS4?

Wii_Development_Kit_1.jpg

That is a GC devkit on top of the PS4 one.

It's a pre-production Wii devkit (Remember, the Original Wii had Gamecube ports).
