Meteorite crash in Russia

Radio-Canada refers to it as a meteor shower, and with multiple impacts in dozens of cities according to Russia.

It's fragments from one 40m meterorite.

You are incorrect, the 40m asteroid is still hours from earth and in a completely different orbit than the meteor that streaked across the Russian sky.

There are zero confirmed reports of any impact sites, it's unlikely that there are any.

I meant 11 tons.

Six cities were heavily impacted.

Edit: one 11 ton meteor that broke up into multiple meteorites which then possibly impacted.

Radio-Canada doesn't sound very reliable.

I believe it's CBC. They're usually reliable but I'm not saying they're right in this instance.

CBC itself is reporting just one meteor though... http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/story/2013/02/15/russia-meteorite.html

Vladimir Zhirinovsky, the nationalist leader noted for vehement statements, said "It's not meteors falling, it's the test of a new weapon by the Americans," the RIA Novosti news agency reported.

A roof in a zinc factory supposedly collapsed. Russia has deployed 20k soldeirs.

Wow these videos are pretty amazing. Did they have any warning this thing was coming or did it just take everyone by surprise?

Vladimir Zhirinovsky sounds like a rational dude.

This asteroid is likely so small that it would have been impossible to see from any reasonable distance. 10 tons is not very big.

For comparison, the 2012 DA14 asteroid that will be passing in a few hours is 190,000 metric tons.

with great power... comes... METEOR MAN

Cities being 'impacted' really isn't the right word. Affected perhaps, but apart from one unverified report I saw on Sky News of a 6 metre crater, there are no reported impact sites. All of the damage has been from the explosion.

Q&A on today's meteor strike by Stuart Clark
Why did we not see this coming?

The Russian meteorite hit during the daytime. The glare of the sun masked its approach, like a fighter pilot using the sun to blind an enemy to the attack. There could be thousands of asteroids that orbit closer to the sun than the Earth, approaching our planet only occasionally and always from "out of the sun". They are virtually impossible to spot from Earth because they are always masked by daylight. Only a space telescope could see these effectively. The European Space Agency's Gaia mission will help discover more of these asteroids.

I literally shit my pants just listening to this on my headphones.

Do you in fact mean it when you use the word literally? Because if so you have my sympathy need to change, and if not I need to kill you. A peer reviewing of a story for a writing class has used my patience with this word up for a while. No, student-writier, you were not literally ripped in half.

I see a many news websites that calls it a meteor shower, not just Radio-Canada. Some says there is hundreds of injured.

Sucks that i can't seem to be able to watch any sort of video from work. Really want to see it.

When the boom went off I farted and it feels a little wet so I think so. :(

Again, there is no evidence that it was a 'shower' or that there is a single or multiple impact sites.

There's reports coming out about the zinc factory, but even that isn't confirmed to be an impact site.

It is literally raining cats and dogs!

Those lumps of meteroite that must be scattered around are worth a fair amount of money. Would'nt surprise me if a sudden influx of meteorite hunters descended on Russia soon.

I love the way it sounds when Russian people shout and curse when they're agitated, there's a huge lack of that in these vids.
