Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

I strongly believe that modern Nintendo has become a barrier for Zelda's evolution.

Nintendo games have become conservative, unambitious, casualized and, instead of pushing design and technology like they used to, are trying to get away by putting too much emphasis on gimmicks.

Nintendo's modern approach on gaming may be fine when it comes to games like Animal Crossing, Nintendoland, or Wii Sports, but Zelda is a franchise with different needs.

Maybe I'm giving Nintendo too much slack here, but it does seem to be a bit like their fanbase is at fault here. Everybody saying that they're not going to buy a Wii U unless Mario 523 or Zelda 482 arrive, with NSMB games massively outselling the more inventive 3D Mario ones and Zelda forums basically being collections of long monologues how Zelda needs to be more like that user remembers it. Of course Nintendo needs to be more paternalistic in this (you don't know what you want, here this completely new thing is what you really want), but it's hard to argue with economics. Luckily the times seem to be a changin in that NSMBU seems to have impressed absolutely no one.

Holy shit, I feel bad now... I meant to say Resident Evil 4! Now... theres no coming back. Im... sorry... mother...

Portal 2 is one of the worst PUZZLE games I've played. The humor and the exploration are all excellent IMO, but the puzzles are extremely simple and almost never require you to actually think. Most of the solutions are just a matter of finding the spots in the environment where the portals can be used.

Toki Tori is 10000x a better puzzle game than Portal will ever be.

Party Chat ruined Xbox Live. It's nearly impossible to communicate with anyone now. Gears 1 was so much fun in 06 and 07. I remember finding a really chill group of people, playing Execution for hours, and adding all those dudes to my FL. Hell, that was basically every damn day. Its how I met a lot of people, how I got good at the game and why It was so much fun. It was great. Now? Nobody talks and everyone is sequestered in their own little party. It's fucking dead

List goes on like this:

•I liked Oblivion and Fallout 3 so much.
•I love that EA releasing so much Sims content.
•I think Halo is bit overrated.
•I think that Far Cry 3 is easy to play and boring. (I've finished it.)
•I don't like Audiosurf.
•Star Wars Republic Commando is one of the best FPS's and Empire At War is one of the best RTS games.
•I loved both KOTOR games.
•I think that Portal 2 was not challenging at all.

There! I've said it! Hahah. I respect everyone's opinion though. :)

How is that controversial? Both those games are critically acclaimed.

I feel that all those artsy indie "games" like Journey, To The Moon or Proteus are hugely overrated, insanely boring and have no gameplay. I don't even like calling them games.
I don't have anything against indie games, some of my favourite games are indie, but... yeah, games. Not artsy existential exploration of self and emotions yadda yadda yadda.

- Half life 2 is a boring shooter, as it is the Metroid revamped saga.
- I struggle to understand how gamers wanted a sequel of the first horrible Assassin's Creed.
- Splinter Cell died after they introduced quick saves.
- Super Mario Galaxy 2 is a shameless copypasta of the first game.
- Zelda: Twilight Princess is better than OOT.
- ZombiU is a masterpiece.
- Batman Arkham games have extremely fun combat mechanics, but everything else is garbage.
- Crash Team Racing was better than Mario Kart 64.
- GTA San Andreas is better than GTA IV.
- Uncharted is very dull and boring, as Resistance and most Ps3 exclusives are.
- God of War 3 has no good aspect in it.
- The Elder Scrolls saga is extremely boring.
- Halo saga is extremely repetitive and feels old.
- Metal Gear Solid (serie) has good cut-scenes, but the gameplay is garbage.
- Zelda in cell-shading is an omen it will suck.

Half-Life 2 simply sucks. Terrible gunplay. No good music. Boring atmopshere. I can't believe it is rated 95+ on metacritic.

ROFL.

Actually I forgot one that's quite a recent addition:

Far Cry 3 is seriously nothing special. Graphically on PC? yeah, it's great, but as a game? It does nothing out of the ordinary. Was very let down after how good the word of mouth was for it.

* I can't find the logic from where people criticizes Assassin Creed 1 for being repetitive and, at the same time, praises AC2. AC2 changes didn't add anything significant from what the first game had, ending with almost the same gameplay experience. at least AC story and settings were a lot interesting. and AlTair was way cooler than Ezio.

Also this, and I say that as someone who likes AC, except for AC3.

the best online fps ever is RTCW. Everything that came after it is a shallow, boring, unimaginative piece of fuck

Sony's first party franchises are the definition of uninteresting to me. That's why I never bought a PS3 and will probably never buy a PS4

Majora's Mask is the best game ever made; Skyward Sword is the second best

Metroid Fusion is miles better than Zero Mission, which is easy, short and generally a unsatisfying game

Mass Effect 2 is the best in the trilogy

New Vegas is one incredibly boring game

I just cannot get into Dragon Quest games

I dont think the Japanese deserve they're own genre titled JRPG. An RPG is an RPG, theres nothing special about there take on the genre. I dont go around calling Killzone a EUFPS.

The ,,PC master race'' is a bad joke and people don't even realize it. It shows when people constantly beg for PC ports and the exclusives that are on consoles, most importantly on Nintendo and Sony consoles plus handhelds are usually the best in the industry while you can only get the most basic, uninteresting Western support on PC. Indies kinda save it, but 3 hour downloadable titles can't replace the real deal. Steam prices might be great, but it basically only features slightly more fancy game rentals, nothing that could replace physical copies - not to mention that you save more money when you can sell a bad game again. Better graphics can't make up for the disadvantages the PC has compared to consoles, the Humble Indie Bundles are currently the best thing about it as a gaming platform.

Whilst I don't think you opinion is as black and white as that, I definitely do agree on the port begging from the PC guys.

-Skyrim was okay and hugely underrated on this board. Even mentions you like it gets you jumped on by a dozen people. Don't get me wrong it's pretty terrible. I never saw the appeal of treating those who like it as outcasts or looking down upon them.

-Far cry 2 had the best multiplayer this gen

-Dragon age 2 deserved the hate.

-Oblivion was in most cases far worse then Skyrim

-Daggerfall and Arena are overrated. I've put int almost a hundred hours in Daggerfall, and aside from the copy/paste everything, the dungeons are horrible. I should not spend 8 hours lost in a cave. Morrowind is the only true good TES game.

-Deus Ex is overrated, but, still better then most WRPGs this gen

-Call of Duty gets too much hate. It's insane how people are allowed to go out of their way to bash the game and the players. If I did that to a well loved WRPG here I'd be getting a one way ticket to banville.

-The Halo series deserves the hype. I've been a fan since Halo 1.

-Duke Nukem Forever was terrible and insulting. Never should have been released.

-I never understood the "outrage" over Drake killing people. They aren't innocent civilians, they're faceless goons out to stop you. It's a video game.

-"realism" is killing the industry. Less real, more fantasy.

-Military shooters are the worst thing to happen to the industry.

-Fallout 3 was a good game.

Which strikes onto a different argument entirely, which is should third party exclusives exist at all? The situation with GTA V is the perfect example of this.

I think there is merit in saying there shouldn't but the disparity in power between the PC and the consoles remains a huge problem. So, with that being unhelpable, why can't all games from third parties start their development on PC then work their way down to consoles.

I guess you could count that as a controverisial opinion on my part.

Here's something:

Despite the fact that I had never played any Resident Evil game to completion, I decided to buy me a copy of Resident Evil 4 (got the PS2 version shortly after it came out; I didn't have a GCN), since everyone was praising the game as one of the best ever.

Now, don't get me wrong, I did enjoy the game, but I failed to see what all the fuss was and still is about. I found most enemies to be frustrating to fight against (the term "bullet-sponge" comes to mind), I thought the fact that I couldn't move while aiming was too restrictive, and some of the locales seemed a bit boring.

That's not to say that it's a bad game, I do think it's a good game, but I think it might be a bit overrated.

The previous fixed camera angles Resident Evils are far more superior to 4.

I agree with that to some extent. I mean if anyone really wanted red dead, they should have bought a console for it. I don't expect major mmos like world of Warcraft to ever hit consoles (imagine if they did) and leave most of my single player games on console, whereas most of my multiplayer is on PC.

I also think that the Nintendo fanbase is the most brand loyal fanbase out there and get very vocal and defensive, especially when it gets to facts. plenty revert to direct comparisons to the competition to prove that Nintendo isint the worst, which is a pretty stupid way of defending points like the amount of entries in a specific franchise.

The difference that I see is that most of the other non Nintendo ips is that usually they run their course and are done with them in a span of one generation, whereas Nintendo continues to rely on things like Mario to establish themselves and keep them relevant.

If Mario was not at the forefront of video game mascots I doubt Nintendo would have seen the continuing success it has had, but for now all I see in EAD is Mario.

its a good thing retro and moniloth are there now, bringing in new things and fresh takes on ideas.

-Duke Nukem Forever was terrible and insulting. Never should have been released.
That's not controversial, that's the most common opinion about the game. Mine is the controversial one: I liked the game, enjoyed playing it and don't agree at all with the hate it received.

Bioshock is incoherent piece of mess. Blow said in recent interview that it's like someone's saying one thing and a moment later he does something completely opposite - I coudn't agree more.

Skyward Sword is the best Zelda. Yeah I said it!
Majora's Mask would like a word with you! :P

I own a highend PC and play it regularly, but I think PC elitism is childish and embarrassing.

We gotta have SOMETHING.

-Fallout 3 was a good game.

I knew I liked you. and most of this list is almost spot on. Especially the bolded. Although I would add that mentioning "Call of Duty gets too much hate" and "Military shooters are the worst thing to happen to the industry" is a bit ironic :P. Although COD4 is, and will probably always be the best COD that cant be beaten.

And also WAT?? People bitch about Drake killing people? I must have missed all that, to which I say: SERIOUSLY?

Far Cry 2's multiplayer was only good, because the Map Editor made it so. Even more troubling is Ubisoft literally KILLED Far Cry 3's multiplayer with their stupid playlists.

And finally. Yes. Fallout 3 is my favorite game of this generation.

The previous fixed camera angles Resident Evils are far more superior to 4.

As a Silent Hill fan, I'm 100% in agreement with you. I definitely see how the third person camera has its place in action games, but the way it has made its way into adventure and horror games makes me pretty sad.

When MS screwed up the original Xbox users just after 360 came out; I started disliking that company. I think they are the "devils" in this generation, by all the DLC, ads and subscription stuff they introduced, and everyone else copied. I have a feeling they don't care about the end users as much as Sony or Nintendo, and because of that I strongly dislike them as a company now.

Trying to think what might truly be controversial ideas, so, what the heck:

- a large percentage of enthusiast game players are suffering from burnout, which combined with the stress of the contemporary world, makes for exaggerated cynicism. And a growing inability to enjoy things without neurosis getting in the way.

- western game makers are somewhat overrated in their ability to create "sophisticated" games and in how much they've moved the art of game making forward. Western companies have mastered marketing and production values - aka, throw money at it.

- hatred for digital distribution is largely based on phantom fears that rarely affect people in practical terms. There are legitimate concerns but the hate is out of scale.

- drama and emotional investment in the game console world is analogous to fans of horse drawn carriages arguing over who will sell the most carriages next year, while Henry Ford is busy training workers on his new assembly line.

- there's a ridiculous amount of fixation on Nintendo's doom finally being upon us because Nintendo's importance to the game industry has been overvalued by both fans, and by non-fans who have been conditioned to see Nintendo as a central pillar (and hated that, because they had no respect for Nintendo).

- having said that, if there is a gaming "crash", Nintendo is most likely to find a way to survive it if only because it's their only business.

- oh, and a gaming crash could happen. It's just that interactive games as a whole can't crash - they're too big, too many demographics. The AAA+A world based around impressing one slice of game customers though, has got to rest on shaky legs.

- Yeah, yeah, Half-Life 2 is very overrated.

- ... but Half-Life 2 is still pretty good. A lot of games often called horrible are not so. Many are flawed, and could be better. But relatively few of the frequently debated games are actually bad. They've just personally offended many people who want them to be something they are not.

I don't care for the Halo series that much and I think other games have done better MP.

Edit: I didn't read the post above before I typed my opinion, so that is a complete coincidence...

All of the uncharted are boring and mediocre. The graphics are only impressive for the PS3, to Sony and fans, and not much else.

Twilight Princess is the most boring Zelda game I've ever played, and the supposedly "realistic" looking style made it the worst/most uninteresting looking as well.

Gears of War is more repetitive than Call of Duty.

I wonder if games going for realism and being boring are related.(*cough*Lair*cough*)

Far Cry 3 wasn't good, it was boring and repetitive. The fact that it made it on so many Game of the Year lists of the press boggles my mind.

Party Chat ruined Xbox Live. It's nearly impossible to communicate with anyone now. Gears 1 was so much fun in 06 and 07. I agree with this. My enjoyment of xbox live plummeted once party chat became a thing. Halo and Gears just didn't feel the same without everyone communicating.

I loved the story, the island was pretty, most missions were fun and the music was great.

That being said, I have no need to go back and explore after finishing the main quest. Luckily I picked the real ending and not the bullshit one. The boss fights were a joke.
