So about that Vita?

Ubiquitous remote play support means that Vita will remain a fantastic device even if developer support dies off, so I'm happy enough after that announcement.

* Most titles. Sony isn't expecting 100% of PS4 games to be compatible, and it MIGHT be up to the developer as to whether or not they want to support Remote Play.

The remote play feature is great (if fully realised), but again I see it only appealing to existing owners.

Will people buying a $400+ PS4 also pick up a $200+ PSVita as a companion device?

Well I can't speak for all people, but sure, I will, I jsut wrote it above in fact. I can already get a Vita for £170, £205 with a game & memory card on amazon. They cut the console only package in price and yea, I'll buy a £150 pad that can double as a handheld console. A dualshock will cost £40 anyway so £100extra on top of the second controller I'll need to buy anyway, for off tv play of my ps4, and potential for original handheld games when I'm not in the ps4's vicinity? Yea. Definitely. Sure, the casuals wouldn't do this likely, but the casuals aren't buy the Vita anyway, this will at least give core gamers a reason to buy it.

I assume "expanding the PS Vita into the living room" ties into Vita the peripheral, since Vita will be able to "seamlessly pull PS4 titles from their living room TVs."

I somehow doubt that as they did not want to talk about those living room plans, but did talk about remote play plans.

Still, love my Vita more and more each day. Just stay the course Sony and these "dark" days of the Vita will soon be behind us

We who already own a Vita are rejoicing at yesterday's announcements. Those who don't own one... wait for the price drop. Playing your Wii U on the controller around the house is one thing but playing your PS4/PS3/PS2 games in the Airport is a whole other ball game. I'm pretty pumped.

This is basically what people said would happen for ps3+psp that certainly never happened.

I liked the Vita stuff they talked about..

can´t fucking wait to take my PsVita with me to work and play PS4 games here ..

So Vita isn't dead as long as we can use it as a PS4 remote play device even though there's a glaring omission of games? K... Way to buy an expensive PS4 accessory otherwise.

Or the dozens of games coming out this year.

In for Soul Sacrifice at the very least. Dragon's Crown when that comes out, for sure.

I wasn't about to start trying to convince someone that suggests selling it, though. If you don't see the value, you're probably not going to see the value in it.

They certainly didn't tell anyone otherwise

That wasn't ps4 announcement that was future of playstation, if Sony doesn't consider Vita part of the future of the playstation, they consider it part of its past since they're not acknowledging it in the present.

Well a ps4 peripheral won't get discontinued before ps4 is dead really.

You reallly are reading too much into the "future of Playstation" line. This meeting most definately was for the PS4 reveal and its related techs, not to talk about anything and everything Playstation. More Vita info will come, tonight was not the night for it.

I came away from the conference convinced that Vita has a role to play for several years, not the opposite. They opened the conference with it, which shocked me, when they really didn't have to even mention it at all.

they pushed remote play pretty hard in the conference .... sounds like genki is adding their tech into the native ps4 OS to make the experience even better on vita as well...

i mean ... what better time to buy a vita, theres great games out already, games are basically free thanks to pS+ ... and once ps4 is out you can use it as the awesome 2nd screen device that it is

I guess I was also reading too much about the Vita Heaven event too....
Guess I'll be reading too much into what they'll call Vita coverage come e3...

Indeed you were. Find me a single official source that refers to the 18th event as 'Vita Heaven'. It was an announcement of a price-cut, some new bundles and then they showed the games that are due to be released imminently in the region they're selling the new bundles in. It wasn't Vita Heaven.

Guess I'll be reading too much into what they'll call Vita coverage come e3...
Probably, only time will tell. I suspect that the general perception of the Vita will still be overwhelmingly negative after E3, regardless of what they show.

I just don't understand...why the hell would they announce it later when Sony had the attention of MILLIONS of people? Why would they squander such a wonderful opportunity like this? I guess Square Enix trolling us with a demo from E3 was more important...

Kassastsu should commit sudoku for making that thread title. The event didn't have a proper name, it was literally called "New Information About PSVita".

?

To be fair not everyone thought of it that way, but Sony PR failed big time by not clarifying anything

Well like everything regarding the Vita PR, Sony failed big time.
Between the laughable solution they proposed for BC and how they handled everything...

Well if they keep treating Vita worse than they're treating their Xperia mobile line... yeah it can't get better.

what did you expect from the Vita at THIS event..?

Vita Heaven announced a price drop and showcased several games directed at 1 region… and it was announced 1 day in advance. It was never meant to be a huge event, and it did what it was supposed to.

Plenty of time and appropriate events this year for us to learn more about the Vitas future.

The impression I got was that he was referring to something else they weren't talking about last night.

He offered that Vita's OS was great for media and application consumption before making that statement. Not sure why that would be relevant in the context of a PS4 owner streaming games to their PSVita.

Will try to go back and get the full quote, but it sounded like something else to me at the time.

I really expected a relaunch of sorts for the vita. It didn't get it, so it continues to be on the fringe of death in the west.

How is it SCE's responsibility that shitty western blogs can't translate text themselves?
The same as it is Nintendo's responsability to tell people that WiiU is a new system and not just a Wii peripheral.

Like an event about the future of the playstation product line?

There is a time and place for everything, and if they had no imminent details about the Vita to share today then so be it. This was never meant to be about the Vita, and most any Vita news would have been steamrolled by the hype of PS4 news. The Vita can claim its own spotlight when Sony is ready

I think they were talking about putting Vita tech in other home entertainment devices which could be interesting. So maybe a future Sony TV will be packing a Vita chipset.

How the hell is streaming games to the Vita even going to work?

Last I checked the Vita has 2 triggers, where as the PS4 has (appropriately) 4.

An inerrant problem rises.

Well we will see when one of those events come up :)

Again, you are wrong if you have it in your head that this event was meant to be about anything and everything Playstation. It is painfully obvious that it was only supposed to be about the PS4 and related new techs for it.

Looking back at the segment, I think it is a bit ambiguous. He may well mean PS4/PSVita stuff. Just strange that he mentions talking about it 'later this year' when they went on to talk about that right there :P

In fact, the operating system and chipset inside PlayStation Vita is so powerful, we think it could bring significant value to gamers' living room experiences. We know the potential for expanding PlayStation Vita to the living room is real, and promises to deliver amazing games and multimedia. We'll be talking more about this exciting initiative later this year, but it's safe to say that we'll continue to unlock PlayStation Vita's potential.

ehh yes exactly.. the FUTURE.. ps3 and Psvita is Present time.. not future.

Vita is clearly NOT present time considering how much weight Sony is putting behind.

Same way psp games play ps1 games or Vita play ps1/ps2 games I'd say.

Well we will see when one of those events come up :)

Like yesterday night?
It was labelled Playstation future after all not Playstation home console boogaloo.

Back touch. Problem solved. (No, it's not as good as a trigger, but it can emulate it sufficiently well)

Likely those extra buttons would be mapped to the screen or rear touchpad

The same as it is Nintendo's responsability to tell people that WiiU is a new system and not just a Wii peripheral.

So is this an admission that you're just trolling? A Japan-only webcast that was announced, and happened on the same day is no where near Nintendo's struggles with Wii U's identity with the mainstream public. Nor do I think it's Sony's responsibility to correct hundreds of video game websites who just repost stuff from GAF.

It was clear that yesterday's event was all about PS4. And where would you have put Vita content during this packed show? But Andrew House mentioned that you will hear more about the Vita and the plans they have for it later this year.

Also how can people not acknowledge the RemotePlay capablities that make the Vita even more powerful?

Vita already has great games and will become a great companion to PS4.
Biggest hurdle is the price still, because people wouldn't buy a Vita. And with out a proper install base not many Third-Parties would put their efforts on Vita (see Wii U).

I say the Vita is a device with great potential and with the posibilites of the upcoming PS4 I would not sell my Vita too soon.

from the press release:

A key feature enabled by second screens is “Remote Play” and PS4 fully unlocks its potential by making PS Vita the ultimate companion device. With PS Vita, gamers will be able to seamlessly pull PS4 titles from their living room TVs and play them on PS Vita’s beautiful 5-inch display and intuitive dual analog sticks over Wi-Fi networks*1. It is SCEI’s long-term vision is to make most PS4 titles playable on PS Vita*2.

*2 Exept games that require peripherals such as PlayStation®4 Eye .

I like how the first guy (the developer from the Atari days) had trouble remembering the Vita in his presentation lol.
