8-4 Play 2/22/2013: ANDREW HOUSE PARTY

Not interested in listening to the podcast, but did 8-4 write Revengeance's english script? It is pretty god-like (especially the climax).

I actually just watched the Jimmy Fallon Killzone demo and it was pretty underwhelming for the most part :\

The set piece at the end where you jump out of the building and dangle from the rope, overlooking the futuristic city is pretty damn magnificent, though. I just wish the gameplay had seemed like less of a bore.

The Jimmy Fallon demo was embarrassing, just watch the entire thing here.

Listened to the podcast.

Outside of Deep Down and the social/sharing features they don't seem too impressed with what was showed. Excited about the potential, but a wait and see stance.

Yeah, that was a much better demo, for sure. But still, the game just doesn't look like much fun, except for the bit at the end. I would play it if most of it were similar to that. :p

Keep in mind we are not media. :) We exaggerate, we hyperbolize, we say pretty much whatever we feel like saying - we're just having a good time shooting the shit about games. I personally do not think Killzone is the antichrist or anything but I confess I'm not interested in it in the least. I might play this one if it's out at launch just because it'll be something new and pretty to mess with for a couple of days, but I would MUCH prefer they used all that manpower to try and make something fresh and original instead.

Anyway, I did not say wow. ;p

Okay. I'd like to know if they translated it to english or japanese.
Into English.

Confirmed:

Project X = Fire Emblem Awakening
Project Y = Metal Gear Rising
Project Z = ???

My guess is Tales of Xillia

So, I was really down on the PS4 event during, after, and since -- but hyped to the moon before! --, but I've got to say... I'm only halfway through the episode, but you guys have brought me aboard the hype train. I felt like I was being fed a series of hypotheticals for an hour followed by game demos that were mostly baffling and underwhelming, but you guys have done a great job of taking some of the (inherent / necessary) vagueness to interesting conclusions. So, thank you. You guys continue to be my favorite gaming podcast around for precisely reasons like this.

Honestly, there was something about the sheen / lighting / color scheme that reminded me of Perfect Dark Zero, and I'll happily come right out and say I do think Killzone is the antichrist. It's just an awful series of games, but I do hold out hope that they can at least fix the input lag / molasses feel on PS4.

Does analog input mean anything else I don't know? It's the same damn input since PS1!

That In n Out burger story is fascinating!

The clip is so short it's really hard to get anything out of it. If you're into the series you noticed some new interesting stuff, but the best thing about Killzone games is how good they feel to play.

It was very nice that they showed a lot more of the civilian world. It's something very few shooters do - you rarely get to see the how people interact and carry on about their lives. That's one of the things that I hope changes next gen so I was very glad to see that.

Also the Berlin wall idea that they showed is fantastic and I really hope they make good use of it in the game.

You should probably save your money. Anytime you guys talk about Killzone in the podcast it's so filled with contempt that there's no way you'd enjoy this game, just coming from your preconceptions about it. That's my impression at least, I'd love to be wrong about it.

For me Killzone 2 is the best multiplayer shooter on current gen so I'm very happy that Sony is continuing with the franchise. :) Not surprised at all also, the games do well for them.

Well I think Microsoft criticism of the Sony conference is that Sony introduce a couple key things (Touchpad, Camera) and really didn't explain what they are for.

Also John the Blizzard guys hinted on Game Trailers that it's not exclusive. Keighley specifically asked if it was exclusive and they said this is Sony's night and not talking about other systems.

They are working on another game. I was also hoping that Guerilla was going to show that instead. But maybe Sony took the criticism to heart that they don't need 3 first person shooters as first-party titles so they have Guerilla show off the game.

Great episode. Most things said about the Sony event are pretty much in line with my own feelings.
And I have to agree with John about the diminishing returns of better graphics. I appreciate the visual leap over the current gen, but it's not making me nearly as excited as it used to.

Last time I said "wow" was probably the X trailer, especially the mech part. Before that was Bayonetta 2's announcement, but that's a different issue entirely.

Prior to that, I think the last thing to really blow me away (at the time) was seeing Ni no Kuni PS3 unveiled.

Vita to become one really expensive PS4 accessory. Poor Vita.

As for the conference, I give it a solid B. There was not a lot game wise that I was excited about, but the possibilities of what they're doing with the hardware, the social aspect and what sort of graphics the system can push are great. I'm sure E3 will provide me with much more of a wow factor when we get to see many, many more projects up close and detailed.

oh man the end of this podcast was extremely touching :(

RIP

Just getting to the end now. Sad stuff, but I'm glad they spent some time talking about him. Interesting guy.

Now that it's out that 8-4 worked on Metal Gear Rising, I need to know if 8-4 was responsible for the word Revengeance. It would make me so happy if that was you guys.

Also, great send-off for Kenji Eno. Very touching.

I'm looking forward to another Killzone even though 3 was disappointing. KZ2 is one of the best MP shooters this gen and Liberation for PSP was incredible. The games don't have the most exciting campaigns in the world and the story isn't very good (especially in 3) but I still think the series is worth continuing. The universe has a lot of potential but Guerilla really needs to bring in some professional writers to help the series get there.

They really should have called the police. We can't let Hiroko run wild. Who knows what she will do next.

I always find it awkward when friends try and brag about getting away with doing something wrong. I've had a friend tell me he got away with stealing a PC activation key from GameStop because they accidentally left it in the display case, and he thought I would have been excited to here that. He's just telling me he's a thief.

was going great until they got to the games impressions. seemed they didn't like anything. except deep down, which isn't even gameplay but an engine tech demo thing. and that one guy who can't be impressed if his life depended on it.

am i the only one going balls to wall insanely hyped over footage like killzone and infamous? i definitely think those titles are huge leaps and bounds beyond what we currently have and i'm excited to play them. serious cg level visuals. knack looked awesome to me too.

I'm pretty sure Hiroko was not shoplifting and bragging about it. She did a dodgy thing to to her shitty employer years and years ago and it's funny if only because it's totally out of character for her. No harm done in looking back at the dumb things we did in the past.

/edit/ I do wanna hear the bizarro version of the podcast where everyone is judging her and pointing with their finger at her, though.

It's probably the fact that the only things really impressive about Killzone and Infamous (from what was shown) were the visuals.

As for Knack, it didn't really do much for me yet. I feel like a douche for saying it (because it's clearly going for something different and I respect that) but I don't like the art style, and it turned me off a bit. As for the gameplay, well, conceptually it seems interesting but we haven't seen anything of substance yet, so it's hard to judge it on that front.

I'm still waiting for Naughty Dog's and Media Molecule's projects, and Last Guardian if it's been moved to PS4 as rumoured. Those are the Sony first party teams which consistently impress me the most. I'm sure they'll be great. So far, to me, the most interesting things about PS4 coming from Sony are the social features.

I'm fairly keen on some of the third party stuff though, like Watch_Dogs and Deep Down.

I know what she did. It isn't a "dodgy" thing. It's just wrong. It's theft. I'm not a fan of justifications for theft. Anyways, I don't want to turn this thread into an argument of morality. I just find it really awkward when people brag about doing things that are wrong like that.

I don't blame them on Killzone, especially when they brought up the animation looking janky. One of the biggest issues with video games is animation and with next gen it's going to get worse. Across the board video game animation is average at best (with the expection of NaughtyDogs work). The more realistic these games start to look, the more obvious it starts to become that people aren't moving and behaving the way we THINK they should move and behave.

The thing is, I don't think game animation will ever really improve over what it is now. There simply isn't time for that sort of work in game development. You look at something like a Pixar movie which averages in length of about an hour and a half. You have a whole team of people working on all the different scenes. There are people that handle maybe a handful of scenes/shots tops throughout the entire production to ensure these sequences look their best. That just can't happen with video games. They can't dedicate that sort of man power to these games that are 8 - 20 hours and account for all the different character animation and set pieces.

My point being the uncanny valley is going to hit hard as hell this gen.

I get if you aren't really big on Killzone in particular and a similar Killzone game isn't going to rock your world. But anybody who saw that Killzone demo should at least be excited to see a game like that running on PS4 because it lets you see what others can do. The city was the most impressive part of the demo to me. Open world games are going to be stunning from what we saw of that demo. The closest thing we have to seeing a detailed city like that where you are flying around at fast speeds is Rachet and Clank. Just look at the difference in quality.

But their main complaint about Killzone was that it was creatively bankrupt in the way it recycled content and ideas! It was just a ridiculous reaction to a game that doesn't interest them, especially when they are notorious for freaking out about playing new versions of the same game in a series that is famous for not appealing to a large group of people.

Since the series debuted, it has sold 21 million units as of May 2012.

Note the only Capcom franchises that has sold more copies is RE, with three times as many games in the franchise, and Mega Man, with five times as many games in the franchise.

Oh yeah, the city shot was extremely impressive. I felt a lot like many others in that the opening to Killzone was impressive, but the moment it turned into a game it was just "blah."

I'm with the 8-4 guys in that Capcom's game was the mind blower. If that's really real time footage then holy shit. It raises the question though, how many developers can even afford to do stuff like that this gen?

I was quite moved by the little eulogy thing at the end for Kenji Eno. That was really nice of you guys.

Mark, could you convince Shawn to record something with you when he's over there? I would be totally aboard the hype scooter for that.
