Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - Demo out [Updated: FAQ and Help]

First time playing a Monster Hunter game. Playing the demo on my 3DS (I'll download it on my WiiU this weekend to compare).

Took me a while, but I'm getting the hang of it!

I really dislike the underwater combat though... It's slow, movement is a bit difficult, and the monster just kicks my ass when underwater. The camera controls are also a bit clunky on the 3DS, so it will be interesting to see how that compares with the WiiU version.

Any tips for beating the hard monster? Is there a particular weapon set which works really well for underwater combat? Maybe one of the guns?

Also, are the time limits they have in the demo roughly the same sort of time limits there will be in the final game? It really seems like you won't have a whole lot of time to run around during a quest, and just have to sprint to the monster zone.

How did you come to that number? By eyeballing it?

.

Pretty much. I grew up with and up until recently was a heavy PC gamer. Used to being to spot/estimate framerates.
Capcom PR about 1080p/60fps infuriates me because its a flat out lie. Either drop the resolution down to something more manageable to keep the framerate up or lock the shit to 30

It dose.
3DS is the best version.

It really is

The visual make up is better presented on the hardware because that's what it was designed for/built around

On Wii U, 1080p or not, it's a mostly marginal, sometimes ugly, looking console game with wii/ps2 level assets coupled with amazing animation

Seems like going from being at the back all the time to aim for tails to being right up in a monsters face to strike the head would take a long time to get used to?

Actually in Tri the only two weapons I used were GS and Hammer. The transition was pretty easy, like you said, just switch from one end of the monster to the other. :P

I'm not sure if Monster Hunter will ever have success in the west market now. These gamers are waay too used to playing easy games that throws everything at your face and holds your hand and it seems most are not willing to invest the amount of time it takes to get good at the game.

My only hope is that Capcom doesn't decide to dumb down the series releases on the west from now on just to have a greater appeal. A separate casual mode with infinite stamina and health bars on monsters could be acceptable.

It would be nice if people don't dismiss an entire region of gamers as just easy loving gamers just because a game is not jiving with them. People here like Souls and other challenging and unforgiving games here. Monster Hunter is just a weird playing series with some design issues that was off putting to people here even last gen.

Won't happen. The only thing that could happen is they don't find it profitable in the west. But they aren't going to alter the mechanics of the game and risk losing what they have in Japan.

Which is really bad for the western fans that are around, and in pretty good number right now.

Which is weird because they sure don't mind drastically altering mechanics or destroying their other franchises that is actually loved here.

Except for no online, 1/4 the resolution, and no integrated second analog stick, sure.

The 2nd analog is shoddly implemented
The resolution does not hide the games dated assets sans animation

The only genuine advantage is online, which Capcom deliberately stuck to this one to sell more units

...the fuck bro, that's what I said earlier and the dude above said I was wrong.

So which is it? *crazy eyes*

When the monster limps to a new zone that's when you know it's capturable/getting low on health.

Staggering a monster is not a sign of it's overall health. Each stagger point has it's own limits and then it'll stagger. After it is done with it's stagger, that 'bar' fills up again and you'd have to hit that part a lot again to make it stagger again. Each monster has multiple stagger points though.

But ya, to really tell when it's low on health is when it limps to a new region. And even then, when it gets to the new region it can still go into rage mode and still do all it's full moves. It's not like it limps off to the new zone to let you kill it off.

Thanks for the replies on the switchaxe guys.

Ill mess around with it at some point but ill probably stick to GS or hammer. I used them playing mhfu and they felt the most natural to me, So learning to use them in a group should be easier.

Well yeah. I wasn't originally talking about stunning or staggering with critical shots to a body part (*kisses hammer) I meant when they start to limp away slowly from the fight.

So, I downloaded both versions and for me the Wii U one is the superior one. Better graphics and better controls. On the 3DS, he "L+icon" targeting works but not always and the water sections are really hard because of the camera. On Wii U my only issue was about the text and the map that are way too small... Even smaller than Tri's...

So, I've only played MH3, so these monsters and many of the weapons were news to me. I've managed to beat both of the monsters on my first try. Lagombi is way too easy, Peco level easy. When I learned it's patern I managed to beat it in less than 10 minutes. Plesioth was way harder and it reminds me many monsters. It walks like Peco sometimes, it fights like Lagiacrus on Water and generally it's like a more annoying Barroth with a water cannon. It was a fun battle. From the weapons, my first choices were my 2 favourite, Lance and (the best of all) Long Sword. I've played and I've beat Lagombi with every weapon and I think I've found my new favourite one... Dual Swords. Speed and Power. Great weapons and I'll use them a lot. And in the demo they're really nice because of the paralyse side effect.

Generally, impressed by the game. I cannot wait for the full game. Wii U version be it.

I wonder if that is something that could be patched. I really hate the font and everyone seems to be complaining about the font size.

I'm really liking the bow. It is much more mobile, and easier to use compared to the bowguns. Heavy bowgun is too heavy for me, light bowgun is decent for me, but the bow comes out on top.

Yea, they could potentially patch it.

I really hope so... I had to sit about 1m away from the Tv and I still had a problem with the letters.

Edit: Haha, I think the above user is even more right. 2 feet wow.

I was debating whether or not I should pre order both versions. After playing the 3DS version last night, I cancelled my preorder because I found it damn near uncontrollable. Then I tried it again this morning when I learned about the "lock on" tip and it helped tremendously. Since the 3DS mode can be used online as well as with local play with Wii U, this will probably be great for me and my brother, who will only have the Wii U version to play.

With that being said, I now how both versions preordered on Amazon (with the $20 off) and will be playing both. I am interested in knowing how seamless the save transferring is though.

Great update to the OP, very useful thanks.

At present I have no friends on Wii U, I don't smell or anything lol that's just the way it is.
I was wondering due to online being locked into regions will there be any Gaf threads dedicated by region for those looking to add people.

Great community here btw.

Tried the 3DS demo. Never played MH before, and I died in the easy mission, heh. I hit the monster a million times but it would never die and keep fleeing.

Anyway, not my kind of game as I never liked combat-focused action games.

Will progress from the demo be carried over to the full game? I'm still downloading the Wii U version, so haven't had the chance to play it yet, but I didn't see anything about it on the OP's faq.

After trying every weapon, a couple of them more than once, I'm thinking that I'll play with the switch-axe in the game, it's the one I'm having the more fun with. Switching to sword form mid combo is pretty badass.

Is every weapon type available from the beginning in the final game?

No mate, the demo gives you the opertunity to try different weapons on 2 different monsters, that's it. No progression or even an option to save.

Does anyone know the File size for Wii U if I wanted to digitally download ?

Using the bow and aiming manually with the touch screen is really difficult. Sadly, I still can't take down the first boss with it. I was pretty close though.

That sounds like a hilarious thread, but you know what they really need? A movie.

Monster Hunter: The Movie: The Game

You mean, like this?

Boy, dual swords are so fast. You can basically dance around the monster while laying on the strikes. What does a full demon-mode gauge mean?

Also curious about this.

Dual swords are amazing.
I'm liking them a lot but I've heard that they are supposed to be for more experienced players..
I don't know, they seem pretty accessible to me..

In the final game, I'm gonna choose either Dual Swords, Long Sword, or Hammer.

I can't decide..

Anybody planning using the Amazon discount and picking up both versions?

I was thinking about it..
But I just decided to role with that Best Buy discount... Buy 1 Wii U game, get another half off..

So I preordered Monster Hunter and Pikmin 3.
Probably will cancel my Pikmin 3 preorder when I get Monster Hunter... So basically getting Monster Hunter for $30...

AHH! I want play this online with you guys!

cooooooome on March, hurry the fuck up!

edit:

Too lazy to go back, but if I said tripping instead of limping, my apologies.

but don't be the fucker who sets of the trap before the monster starts to drool!

always listen to your teammates!

Settle this with NSMB U challenges or NanoAssualt scores?

Ill let you choose

How many gold medals you got?

So 3DS's crap resolution makes the animations and assets less dated? Maybe squinting my eyes will make N64 games look like they're on PS4!

"Shoddily implemented" second analog.

As if you can credibly argue having *no* analog stick is better. Have fun in those underwater fights!

Q: Can I kill the monster faster?
Sure. Making use of your items will speed things up a lot. Try to lure a monster into a trap and drop bombs beside it.
If your weapon seems to stop for a split second when you hit, you've hit a weak spot. Try to focus your attacks there.

How long has this been in the game?

After a few hunts and getting plessy a couple of times I can say that the controls are pretty good.
It's got a weird learning curve but once you get the controls down is such a good feeling when you execute your attacks/dodges perfectly.

hrm

I actually just got my Wii U yesterday, can you install disc-based games to its HDD? Because if the eshop version has faster loadtimes I'm going for that.

Nope you cant.
