Metal Gear Rising spoiler thread: God Bless America!

Worst boss fight is the Metal Gear Ray fight at the beginning. The Bladewolf is an awesome fight too. Aside from Ray fight every boss fight is great in this.

Love me some humanoid bosses. Mano e mano.

Last boss has grown on me. I was not a fan of the numerous cutscene interruptions in the fight but Armstrong is like a Fist of the North Star villain... cheesy yet awesome at the same time. Now that's a grown ass man.

Forgot Ray. The camera constantly took a shit during that fight for me. I didn't even get how to attack its head for a while cause the headbutt looked like it was charging the laser and I always got out of the way and underneath it.

With the whole leaving his support team behind, a crazy guy being all "you're just like me," never quite getting over his whole Ripper persona, and the obsession with saving children and spurning adults, does anybody else get the feeling that any future Raiden games are going to set him up as the next Big Boss?

Sunny said he's a hero tho

Sundowner is the only boss that's ass in the game. Armstrong is one of my favorite new Metal Gear characters, I hope he makes a return cyborg style.
No way, Sundowner owned.

All of the bosses were awesome for me but, for the first time in a long while, I had the most fun with the final battle. Fighting a goddamn US Senator was the most hilarious thing ever and the music was beyond epic. Not to mention the actual fight was amazing.

So far Rising is my GOTY.

The short fist fight segment with Armstrong kind of makes me wish there was an Ifrit gauntlet style weapon in the game

And I love the Ray fight, the music is amazing and the way Raiden slams the blade into the sheath after cutting it in half is hilarious

I felt like I missed something with the Sundowner fight. I remember in a trailer that he had cyborg backups and that he would also swing a gigantic smokestack from the environment at you. I got neither of those things to trigger in his fight.

I think I read that his fight actually becomes super good if you bring his frontal shield. I don't even know how you would do that.

I think its hilarious in that portion before the Monsoon fight where you have to sneak past the guards as mentally distraught Raiden you can still slice dudes to pieces if you have the infinite wig on and already have ripper mode unlocked.

Or if you have the broken tier Fox blade upgraded. I murdered everyone for fun with that awkward slice.

I honestly think Armstrong was my favorite fight in the game. He's hard hitting as hell and keeps you on your toes, it's a very thrilling fight. I got him on my second attempt on Hard and it was pretty hilarious realizing the green stuff was him healing himself all the way up, but managing to whittle him down anyway.

I liked the Sam fight but I do think it was too easy all things considered. I had more trouble with Sundowner but I fought him the 'right' way which was precise slicing the shield head on and zandatsu slicing pieces off(which was actually pretty complicated cutting without hitting the other panels). Once he dropped the shield I competety destroyed him, so I'm not really sure what all he is capable of, but I think they made him too slow overall. I do think me fighting him like this was a big part of why I didn't get constantly screwed on the last boss, I already had the proper cutting technique down. The fact that you can skip around that on Sundowner is a rude awakening on Armstrong, I'm assuming.

Oh, Sundowner had the best Zandatsu kill atleast. So ridiculous.

First time I fought him on normal he didn't do it. On hard he jumped into the background and did it. Not sure what triggers it.

Hmm, Raiden becoming a world wide terrorist or target is bound to happen based on Rising's after credits scene. I don't know if Raiden will become Big Boss in the sense of political or global power, but Raiden is definitely going to kill a lot of people based on his own principles and principle alone.

On Hard I just ran behind him and spammed light attacks and then he died. :/

I don't think I killed him too quickly either. I spent way more time on that fight trying to see if the rockets from the helicopters would damage him from behind than I did actually fighting him.

sam is awesome. I guess I'm the only one that hated the Armstrong fight, only cause of the second cut you have to do during those sequences.

You can avoid all of them but the last one in the real fight

but I like the spectacle.

1. Samuel
2. Monsoon
3. Mistral
4. Armstrong
5. Sundowner

Samuel, was the most epic fight, just pure one on one, no tricks, just pure skill. Sundowner was probably the worst of all the boss fights because he didn't really do anything. I expected him to do more with his pincer blades like in the prologue cut scenes, but he stood there and basically did nothing with his exploding shield.

This is my list. Sundowner was really quite fucking boring.

Sundowner gets points for having probably my favourite theme in the game, but I'd have to agree that Monsoon and Armstrong were the standout fights. I was kind of hoping for a more climactic death for Monsoon, but I'll take what I can get.

I'm not the biggest fan of Mistral's fight; mainly because they neutered her amazing theme from its beta iteration and the entire fight was basically "slash slash slash slash slash parry blade mode slash slash slash" and was more of a set piece than an actual battle. It was cinematically impressive, but that's about it.

1. Monsoon
2. Armstrong
3. Sundowner
4. Sam
5. Mistral

You and me both. Would love to see Raiden go MMA.

Also, I wasn't aware that you could blade Armstrong's back while he heals. His health recharged to 160% twice. Didn't find out about it until well after I beat the game.

Next time!

Did anyone else make the same dumb mistake when they fought Sundowner the first time that I did? I wasn't aware that you could destroy his shield with zandatsu the first time so I kick his ass old school style.

Yeah I made that mistake. I did the precision cut, but did not realize the arms turned blue. The area you have to cut them is sometimes small as well since the other parts of the shield are in the way.

I love monsoon because I learned how to parry right during his fight but after armstrong tried to do a fucking elbow drop one me I fell in love with him

I will say this though, the boss fights in Rising are the best of any Platinum Game I've played(haven't done AR).

1. Mistral
2. Sam
3. Monsoon
4. Armstrong
5. Sundowner

I put Mistral at the top because she has the ideal balance of elements for an action game boss, and because the battle totally delivers on MGR's promise of high speed technical action. When I saw the boss trailer, this is exactly what I hoped for. I love the quick human-sized enemies in MGR. I love the parrying, the cutting, the music, even the quicktime events. Mistral has it all. Her attack patterns encourage you to really think about what you're doing. She's fast, so you have to take advantage of Raiden's mobility. She can hit you up close or at long range, and she's almost as acrobatic as you are, so you have to think on your feet and be ready to parry at any time. Her minions will stun you if you stand still, which tests your positional awareness and gives you an extra spur to keep moving. All this, set within a perfectly paced three-act structure, makes the Mistral fight MGR's most satisfying boss battle for me. It starts out intense and only ramps up from there. The Platinum stamp of quality is all over it.

Sam's attacks don't rely on gimmickry, and he doesn't abuse projectiles or retreat to an unreachable part of the environment. He gives you a good honest sword fight in a cool setting, simple as that.

Monsoon was a slight letdown for me because he favors ranged attacks too much and I don't enjoy dodging big whirling chunks of debris. When he engages you up close, though, he can be almost as fun to fight as Mistral. I like the tone of the battle and the surrounding story elements too. Jack the Ripper!

The Armstrong fight unfortunately comes welded to the tail end of a decent but overlong Giant Robot Battle™. The fistfight phase adds to the bloat, but once you get to the real duel, it's pretty good. I despise health regeneration in bosses. That's my biggest complaint. I can't talk about Armstrong without mentioning the high flown narrative stuff woven into the fight. So ridiculous. So cheesy. I absolutely love it.

Sundowner is not terrible, but he's blander than I expected. He just sort of stands there and turtles with his annoying explosive plates. I'd hoped to see him get more use out of his big scary scissor blades. (They're mine now, bitch. Raiden will snip all the battle dudes and robo bros.)

Just beat the game! Overall, I would rank the bosses in this order:

Mistral
Monsoon
Samuel
Sundowner
Armstrong

I'm not really a fan of Armstrong. Didn't really like how long and bloated his boss fight was. Sundonwer kind of just stood there. But the other three were awesome. I put Mistral at the top because of the way the fight changes locales while the music gets more and more intense. Monsoon taught me how to parry, and Sam's was as pure as a sword fight could be.

This is best game Platinum has made and it also has the best Boss fights in the Metal Gear series.

I agree wholeheartedly, Metal Gear Rising reminds me of Zone of the Enders 2 in a lot of ways, not really gameplay or story wise, but Rising is going to be a cult classic in the future, and while it's pretty short what you get is so great the length doesn't even matter.

It's stunning how well MGR works as both an action game and an MGS game. Platinum really did justice to the property, from the character building and in-depth lore in the codec conversations, to the humorous details sprinkled all over the place. You can actually treat MGR like a stealth game, and it plays almost as well that way as when you make full use of the combat system.

MGR has a few rough edges, but who cares when the overall package is so good? Game of the year contender? I think so.

For me it would go

Armstrong
Mistral
Sundowner
Samuel
Monsoon

Armstrong was just so bat shit insane that it was fucking amazing.
I liked mistrals for keeping it simple.
Sundowner while a tad annoying with the explosive shield had a fight in the rain going for him and it was still a pretty cool fight over all.
Samuel is kinda low on the list just because I expected way more from it.
Monsoon I thought was the weakest of the lot. Just didnt think it was very interesting.

Someone please make some gifs of Raiden doing the hundred crack fist on Armstrong.

I tried; they were too big.

Have some Cross-Counter instead:

What's the name of the song that plays for each boss? I know Armstrong is Blood Stained Sand and Mistral is A Stranger I remain.

Armstrong was my favorite battle just because of the difficulty (although it's not so crazy once you figure it all out, of course), but Mistral has to be my runner up and you summed up why perfectly. I also think her theme fit best, which deserves a little credit. Best track, with the best 'kick into overdrive' peaks.

It makes me sad she came up first though. She seemed like a cool villain, but it's pretty much hi and bye. :(

Like I said, Hikari-Chan Bro is character of the year.

Armstrong's is actually called "It Has To Be This Way." Here's the full list:

Metal Gear RAY/GRAD: Rules of Nature

LQ-84i: I'm My Own Master Now

Mistral: A Stranger I Remain

Monsoon: The Stains of Time

Sundowner: Red Sun

Sam: The Only Thing I Know For Real

Metal Gear Excelsus: Collective Consciousness

Armstrong: It Has To Be This Way

I liked Mistral's fight as it had a good sense of progress, moving through three areas, her hair coming loose in the final stage. Cool song, and Zan-Datsuing her to pieces as she slowly freezes felt good.

Plus she's sexy.

Sam is the best boss fight in the game because it's mana e mano no gimmicks allowed boss fight. Like they used to do it back in the day. Plus the whole game was building up to it... I couldn't wait for the salty runback.

Platinum knows sexy when it comes to character designs. She had a pretty troubled childhood like Raiden also, "I butchered those fuckers".

Hitting the Excelsior with it's own bladed-arm was pretty cool. Armstrong would have to get the award for epicness, though, likely due to the Zandatsu sequence of a lifetime, had to strike the zone like 5 times.

It was also refreshing that the Snake lineage had no merit on the world in Rising, that era is done in the Rising series completely and I'm glad it ended up that way. I love Solid Snake and Bigboss, but them having no standing/mark whatsoever in the future is neat.

"I have a dream!" *fist pump*
"...What!?"

Raiden has a bunch of great reactions to Armstrong. "What the hell are you talking about?"

Oh man, I think somehow the Armstrong cutscenes were topped with the "hey, its that dog!" moment with that amazing song cue ("hooooooooo"). I don't even know what they were tapping into there, but it was hype. Then it plays the Sam recording. Too good.

One moment people don't mention a lot, but did crack me up, is in the ending cutscene when Kev catches the coffee cup and gives Courtney a thumbs-up. The way Courtney gives an awkward thumbs-up back is hilarious.

Considering hes not in pieces like the rest of the bosses its very well quite possible that hes alive.

The thing is, he is mostly human. I have a feeling only one of his arms and one of his eyes were replaced. I'm basing this on his asymmetrical body and the wounds he delivers to Raiden.
