Metal Gear Rising spoiler thread: God Bless America!

I simply can't get over how perfect that scene with Wolf throwing Sam's sword to Raiden was.

When that music kicks in... so. fucking. hype.

Kudos to the director of this game. I forget his name, but he did a hell of a job.

Kenji Saito directed this game, I believe.

Excited to see what he will work on next.

WTF am i supposed to be doing at the fistfight section of the armstrong fight?

Playing on very hard and he kills in 2 his and if i block then its like 5 hits. I tried running around and dodging but that seems to just extend my life not actually progress the fight.

Is this right after he hulks out? I can't remember for sure, but I think there's a particular blow he does that triggers a cutscene and the next phase of battle.

Just keep hitting him. Does his health bar still show up?

also, this music will help

So, on one hand, I'm glad they call Armstrong's machine Metal Gear EXCELUS, because this game only having the one Metal Gear to fight would be a bit lame.

On the other hand... it's a bit of a naff design. RAY and REX are iconic.

But... crab robot! D:

RAY > REX > EXCELSUS > ZEKE

It was a better crab tank than the Shagohod at least :P

Also, if you don't mind me asking, why'd you change your name? Did you get sick of the old one or did an MGS reference just "speak to you?"

Mostly the former. Never played Peace Walker, don't really want to going by people's impressions of it, but this name seemed like the brand of stupid I'm drawn to.

I hear you. Come to think of it, Peace Walker probably had the worst names in the MGS series. Between Hot Coldman, Dr. Strangelove, Chico and PazKaz, everything's either lazy or stolen.

AND IT WILL FLOW, LIKE A FLOOD OF RAIN

FLOWING DOWN ON ME

AND IT WILL NOT LET UP UNTIL THE END IS HERE

AND IT WILL GLOW THROUGH THE DARKEST DAY

IN THE FINAL HOUR

AND IT WILL NEVER REST UNTIL THE CLOUDS ARE CLEAR

UNTIL IT FINDS MY DREAMS AND

Game was fantastic fun...until it broke my PS3 (blinking red light of death). Luckily that didn't happen until I beat it and then let it sit on the main title for a few minutes as I was taking care of my kid.

Anyways, two complaints I have are that the voice acting was pretty sub par. Not a fan of the direction they went for most of the characters. I really disliked the voice acting for the kid you save. The other thing is that so many of the people looked really cartoony. Raiden, Sunny, the girl that saves for you and maybe even Sam look fairly normal, but everyone else is ridiculous. Kind of pulled me out of the Metal Gear vibe a couple of times. And that damn football talk during the boss fight. WTF

I love the chorus of the song kicking in at the end of fights. Does this game have a sound track? Guiltiest pleasures of all time. Be fun to listen to working out.

There was kind of an interesting... honesty for the plot. The kids are still going to have difficult lives being cyborg brains, Raiden can't go back to Maverick because he's still a crazy wanted criminal, World Marshal will still exist and the attack ended up partially accomplishing its goal, Armstrong's logic was in a twisted way extremely similar to the more 'noble' characters in the series, Raiden took some of the villain's philosophy with him, and there was no anime "BUT I'M NOT LIKE THAT ANYMORE" Magical Cutscene Therapy where Jack the Ripper was rejected forever and Raiden and the player were free to murder a bunch of dudes conscience-free.

I am not sure why Jett called the story an unmitigated disaster in his review in the OP. It was really good all things considered imo. I think we can consider it the best story in action gaming if nothing else, with it's only real competition being DMC3.

The out-of-nowhere "now save the world from this Metal Gear wielding nutjob!" last-minute turn felt super awkward. That's the big problem I had with the story. It kinda felt like they knew how they were gonna end the game in terms of scenario design, but not in terms of plot- I mean this dude doubles back on his motivations within 10 minutes of meeting the guy.

Actually, I'm pretty sure this game would have been better if the Senator wasn't in it at all. I was kinda expecting the final boss to be some beefed-up Bladewolf or something, I wasn't sure how to read his interactions with Sam.

God of War I easily trumps it and DMC3.

No, it doesn't. God of War is bad and you should feel bad.

The only one that should feel bad is anyone trying to paint MGR's story as anything but mindless drivel. As far as I'm concerned it's too bad PG/KP didn't fully embrace the sillyness until the very last chapter. If the entire game had been on full-stupid mode I'd be more receptive to the plot. As it is I've skipped every cut-scene in the entire game on post runs.

Well, I'm still curious as to why you think that. Raiden has a good character arc and the themes that are playing out are seen through to the end. I have my own problems with certain things, but I'd like to hear your complaints as to why it's so bad.

I like that Rising Raiden seems like he could have evolved from MGS2 Raiden, which I can't say for pseudo-Grey Fox characterization he had in MGS4 suddenly.

Do they mention Snake at all in this game? In any codec scene? I saw the references to Otacon after you land in Pakistan, but nothing about the man himself.

Not that I can think of a reason to mention Snake, but you know. He was a big deal.

1. Monsoon
2. Mistral
3. Sam
4. Sundowner
5. Armstrong

Sam and Sundowner are low because they were too easy. Armstrong is last because I was so pissed fighting him, took two and a half hours. Only time in the game I wasn't having fun. I died a lot in the Monsoon fight too but that was really a great fight. One of my favorite bosses this gen.

I didn't notice anything. I'm guessing they didn't want to (MGS4 spoilers, I guess?)
commit to whether or not he was dead at this point. Leave the options for sequels somewhat open... though hopefully there's not a Solid Snake post-MGS4 game.

EDIT: Guess they do mention him. I missed that one!

Oh come on. The whole JACK IS BACK thing is nonsense. It makes zero sense. Whatever character development was established in MGS2 was completely undone here. The philosophical military waxing was grating. It's grating in the MGS games, but this takes several steps beyond that. There are several instances where it tries too hard to emulate the franchise. STFU about memes already. Frankly, I don't give two shits about the story, not even enough to "analyze" it. I only enjoy it in a "it's so stupid it's funny" way.

Also, brains. Brains of homeless children. Brains of homeless children to be turned into military cyborgs.

Fucking living brains in storage.

BRAINS, dude.

BRAINS.

In few words, the plotting in this game is childish and stupid. Like Vanquish and Bayonetta before it, unsurprisingly.

There's a codec conversation where Raiden can't stop talking about what a big deal Snake was to him. The hero of Shadow Moses, Big Shell, he always does what's right, he's so amazing, a legend. Kevin was like, "Wow...I didn't know you were such a fanboy! Did Snake know he had a stalker?"

Which I thought was pretty funny. Here's Raiden, cyborg ninja badass who destroys Metal Gear Rays with his sword in the opening battle, and he's still got this huge hard-on for Solid. "Snake would kill me if he heard me talking about him like this..."

I think you can get the convo with Kevin at the beginning of the first chapter.

How? Raiden turning out to be a vicious murderer deep down that he's struggling to contain is WAY more consistent with his MGS2 portrayal than "rose left me in an incredibly obvious ruse, boohoo now i am sad"

Raiden is a skull, brain, and spine in a robot body. Given the way the Metal Gear world works and the emphasis on things like child soldiers, this is an oddly natural way for the story to progress post-MGS4.
