Tomb Raider Review Thread!

The platforming has looked like garbage in every piece of footage I've seen especially the streams that have gone up since it leaked. Just because a bunch of stuff explodes while you jump around doesn't mean the platforming is quality.

Many reviewers seem to agree that what is supposed to be the central theme of the story - Lara transforming from a normal girl to a brutal killer - is not handled well at all.

And yet the platforming in many reviews is said to be one of the game's many strengths.

I think the definition of "platforming" is what is being put in focus here. I don't think a good number of people here consider the platforming in Uncharted to be platforming, of which this Tomb Raider bears more similarities to than the classic TR.

The whole "Hold L to win" meme and all that.

I consider it to be platforming. Calling it climbing, traversal etc I don't mind. It stinks in Uncharted. Always has. It's so non-essential that in the Vita game they let you do it by just tapping on the screen and in essence pointing to Nate where you want him to go.

Her image was never brutal murderer... She was an ass-kicking treasure hunter in it for money/sport.

Which is odd considering that of the original core games only 2 were any good. Rest was trash, and the previoud cd games had their fair share of detractors.

The franchise is by no means sacred and for the most part had lost most if not all of its luster...
 
I'll be renting this, the survival elements piqued my interest and I'll have to try the multiplayer out too if it really is like Gears. Assuming there isn't an online pass of course...

I wouldn't go that far (hit me right in the nostalgia), but I agree that they haven't aged well and were very boring. I just think some people just get off on things being challenging (whether intentional or crap controls) and that's all that matters to them. Challenge is great, but making something more accessible and palatable shouldn't be considered horrible in of itself.
 
Very happy to see all the glowing reviews.

I am torn though... Going to preorder the collector's edition but can't decide between the Gamestop or Amazon bonus.

Gamestop preorder gets you the extra tomb challenge you can play in the game and Amazon preorder gets you the art book and in-game skin.

His comments about Lara's name was strange to me (and I've seen a few others believe her name is 'Laura' on the Internet). Is Lara as a name basically unheard of in the US?

Strange too, as he is still mispronouncing Lara (sounded like lair-ra). It is like saying tar or car and adding rah (sounds like the ra in she-ra) on at the end. So tar-rah, car-rah, and then lar-rah.

Yeah i think the challenge came from how shit the games controlled, moving lara about was a challenge in itself.

Both statements have been made in one shape or form, which is what's so confusing.

I'm pretty content at this point to just see what I think next week. Pretty confident at this point that the game is going to insult my intelligence left and right but might be a fun romp.

All it says now in my Games and Software Library is "Available on March 5, 2013 at 12:00 AM (US/Pacific)"

Anyone know why?

This is what's keeping me from pre-ordering from Amazon right now. Has anyone else gotten a Steam key from Amazon for the PC download version yet?
