RTTP: X-Men (2000)
Just re-watched this with my roommates, I haven't seen it in a long time. For the most part it still holds up after 13 years.
The dated aspects are the soundtrack (some of the orchestral pieces seem very late 90's), the leather suits (also very post-The Matrix late 90's) as First Class and The Avengers showed, you can get away with more brightly-colored outfits these days. Obviously many of the digital effects haven't aged terribly well- although Wolverine's claws still look fantastic, largely because they were mostly done practically. It really is hilarious to compare how much better the claw effects look in this compared to Origins.
The scene where he
snikts his claws out for the first time in the bar is still a classic moment to me, one that still stands out as memorable after over a decade of some truly great super-hero movies. I still vividly remember seeing the trailer for this for the first time in front of Shanghai Noon when I was 11 years old and
flipping my shit. I imagine that kids today who are super-hero fans just go ballistic with all the super-hero movies we've been getting.
Of course X-Men 2 will always be superior in my mind, since I feel it explores the ramifications of mutants living alongside humans in a far more meaningful manner (I've always been more in the DC camp than Marvel's, but the X-Men are easily my favorite Marvel characters because of their real-life allegories).
One thing is for sure, giving this a re-watch made me doubly excited at the fact that Brian Singer is returning to the franchise. I am in full-on Days of Future Past hype-mode
