Movies You've Seen Recently III: The Third Chapter

Hmm...well that was interesting. On the one hand, it was kind of annoying and I didn't like it that much. On the other hand, I was totally interested in watching it and wanted to see what would happen, even though nothing ever really happened...so maybe I liked it?
Shadows is pretty middling Cassavetes. If you haven't seen Faces yet, I'd try that instead, or Killing of a Chinese Bookie. His style's quite interesting, I think.

Rock of Ages I haven't seen the musical, but dam is this film bad. Terrible acting, the singing is bad for the most part, and IMO the songs they chose suck too. All I kept thinking is this is a disaster.

Ok so I watched The Master last night. I am not sure what to think. I need to digest it for a little while longer. My initial impression was that this is P.T Andersons weakest work to date.

Primer: What did i just watch? Can someone explain this movie to me?

Killing Them Softly - Maybe I sleepwalked through this but I thought it was pretty bad. WE'RE IN A FINANCIAL CRISIS. Shut the fuck up, I get it already. Also the fact that there is multiple characters that serve absolutely no purpose whatsoever but take up significant screen time is really dumb.

LOL thanks guys. I tried reading the plot synopsis on wikipedia but man,it left me confused even further. I've never come out of a movie thinking, "Well, that wasn't too bad." Then after reading the plot on the web go, "WTF!"

Can I please recommend that you fan's of The Terminator go and get the new remaster.

Its is damn flawless, and looks better than any other version to date. I was blown away. It kind of cam out under the radar and the cover has to look like this to ensure you got he new remaster.

For UK folk myself, you'll wanna look out for this one.

Think we got the transfer a little before you guys. According to Bluray.com, it's really good stuff. Hoping to watch it with some friends soon.

I got the limited edition steelbook of that cover here in the UK, it fucking rocks the transfer is great.

Blu rays suck, I dont know why people dont say it more often. Move weird (different frame rate than were used to in Pal territories?), not that much advantage over DVD, in many cases digitally altered to be "clearer" which does not help the film.

This is an insane generalisation.

no

What's the worst blu-ray you've ever watched?

For me, it's Gangs of New York. It looks like absolute shit; an absolute mess. I'd buy the remastered version (remastered because the original was such a horrible car wreck) but I don't like the movie enough. I did, however, send my Gladiator disc back for the improved version - but that was free.

28 Days Later, but I give it a pass due to what it was shot with.

Ghostbusters is also a pretty shitty transfer

At least there's an excuse for 28 Days Later - it was shot a certain way to evoke CCTV footage, a certain way which doesn't exactly scream out for high definition. The last few scenes (shot 'regularly') actually look rather nice and clear.

american psycho maybe. bad audio/shitty image quality.

Maybe not the worst, but the most disappointing was that original Total Recall blu-ray I bought back in the day, around 2006. They just shitted out a popular catalog title out there for people lookin' for anything to play on their PS3s(like me), and it was sooo grainy and fuzzy, some places looked even WORSE than the DVD, I swear. And the colors were so washed-out and bland.

The best thing to come out of that completely unnecessary Total Recall remake was that it got Lionsgate to give the original the HD treatment it deserved. The Mind-Bending Edition is like night-and-damn-day.

Can't wait for the Robocop remake so we get a proper version of that Verhooven classic, too.

I remember my copy of Platoon not looking great at all. I think I remember it getting absolutely slammed in reviews as well, but I saw it cheap and jumped before doing my research.

Okay I get it, laughing gifs. Why dont you explain how you disagree
The difference in both audio and visual quality between DVD and BR is huge. Yes there are instances where it doesn't seem like there's much of an improvement but they're few and far between in my experience.

Out of curiosity, what kind of a home AV setup do you have? If you don't have a large screen and decent audio setup I can understand why you might struggle to see the difference.

Toy Story 3 again. Absolutely fantastic movie. Emotional, fantastic subtle humor, great characters.. its the best of the three.

This prompted me to read the review of the blu-ray on blu-ray.com. Does anybody else think this reads like Patrick Bateman? I was reading it in his voice and chuckling to myself:

I think it's because his character breaks into these, um, review-esque, fastidious soliloquies (which pretty much never let up in the book) so it was almost inevitable that a review would share that tone.

technically your statement is false.

To my eyes the first time I saw something in 1080i not even 1080p I shit in my pants.

Then I upgraded to a nice large screen and blu ray's in 1080p have been beautiful. To be able to pick out the number of pebbles on and the desert sand is an experience man. DVD is just unwatchable now, as is regular TV.

Blu ray has allowed me to experience movies I have seen dozens of times before for the first time.

Doesn't know what he is talking about.

Watched the Keanu Reeves produced documentary Side by Side: The Science, Art, and Impact of Digital Media from Amazon Prime. He interviews a lot of influential directors, cinematographers, editors, etc discussing the impact of digital movie making vs traditional film. Keanu seems to really know his stuff, and AV geeks may find this quite enjoyable and informative and he takes you through a nice guided tour of the history of the film shooting process.

I'm gonna get on this real soon. I saw it on Netflix and added it to my instant queue immediately. I wish there were more documentaries about filmmaking on the various digital streaming networks. The Story of Film, this Keanu Reeves one, and Tales from the Script are the only competent ones I have heard of or seen.

I watched Battleship. I have never laughed harder at this pieced together film. The peg artillery was pretty ingenious but it ultimately was just a trainwreck of a blockbuster. Its a movie to watch drinking with friends so you can ridicule it in a group.

thanks for the reminder! i'm watching this tonight.

149) The Face of Another 1966

Pretty good, a man who face was burned in a fire struggles with this eventually gets a life like face cover. He goes out to seduce his wife, who claims she knew. Close to the end kinda confused me, was he just seeing those people in his head or were they all disfigured as well ?

150) Pitfall 1962

Somehow managed to get 2 movies back to back from
Hiroshi Teshigahara :P, Good movie as well, I liked The face of another more. This had a lot of sub stories going on in it. Be murder investigation, ghost of a murdered man..ect

151) Harlem Nights 1989

If i told you Richard Pryor, Redd Foxx, Eddie Murphy in a movie together you'd probably think damn, i would like to watch that. But I found out this is not so. Pretty boring gangster film.

152) The Prophecy 1995

I find it amusing Gregory Widen has like 11 directed movies. like 4-5 prophecys, 4-5 highlanders then backdraft. this was meh though

152 total watches

101 new watches

51 rewatches

movie average per day dropped now to 2.62, work has been taking a lot of my energy away and makes me not really want to focus on movies. i figure if/when i start up school in the fall and still be working my movies will drop to like 3 per week.
