SimCity Review Thread - the curse of reboots to strike again?

I think. SimCity 4 could have 8 million in a perfectly tuned city.

No way could Sim City 4 reach 8 million. And that Peter guy sounds really whingy.

I find myself wanting curvy roads and bolt-on buildings, but everything else from SC4, with the Rush Hour expansion.

You know, SC4 is still a perfectly playable game and on steam. I'd be kinda disappointing if they made a copy of that with new graphics.

TBH, the always-online business is kind of a drag since this is a perfect game to play on a train or a plane. (Or a park or a beach or anywhere with no wifi).

Nothing unfair about criticizing bad practices. Hell it'd be a first for this industry.

There is no bad practice in making this reboot an online game, or as you people like to call it "always online DRM". Must all games be stuck in 1995?

And DLC (massive?) store stuff you don't buy won't affect your game.

For some reason I can't seem to shake the feelings this is just another Flight simulator and not just a game. It's hard to describe.

Hey look, it's another AAA-game riddled with objective flaws that somehow won't get in the way of the 9 and 10 out of 10 scores.

I don't see how always online was a bad practice when they designed the whole game around it and have been upfront about it. By this logic , every mmo and f2p game is affected. I understand dislike but it just comes off as overly harsh and looking for arguments on points that have existed since close to the games original reveal

Fine if he personally thinks the game really is that "perfect", but the guy needs to tone it down a little, calm himself down and be more sensible in his assessment.

Yeah, I really hate it when reviewers start tripping over themselves in heaping praise on a game in the most hyperbolic fashion. Its fine if the guy enjoyed the game a lot and thought it was excellent but once you start slapping "PERFECT!" in there too much, it makes me start to question your judgment, no matter the game.

Unless it's a Mario game, right?

Didn't see anything wrong with the Polygon review. Guy just really liked the game.

There is. There was no reason to make it an online only game, you can have online without trying to slip DRM in there.

Wow. This isn't sim city. This is sim town.

Everything said in that Ars article makes me fucking estatic that I'm not buying this game.

Seems like the regional stuff is nothing more than a poor scapegoat for always online, but in doing so have crippled their own game with tiny city size limits and farmville style gifts.

What a fucking bummer.

I remember listening to a podcast that said they didn't have a review up soon because EA is forcing them to review it in their own studio in a controlled environment. Perfect setup for excellent scores.

And these are?

I'm sure you're gonna argue with me and call these features but don't expect a counterargument.

I'll just quote the nice and tidy list

DRM, arbitrary forced social features, in-game store, and massive amount of DLC at release.

10/10

Did you even play the betas or are slightly informed on the game? This games works as persistent online towns. It's pretty much an MMO only with small clusters of players. Could they have made it a different game, a SimCity that also has an online mode? yes they could have, it just wouldn't be the same game. And there's nothing wrong with the type of game it is.

Not so sure about that. Game chugs on modern machines without lots of user fixes, and even on release performed poorly generally. Really badly optimized game.

Maybe he's just awful at the game and all his residential zones are the most basic?

I really hope there isn't a "right" way to play this iteration of SimCity. City builders should be organic and expressive, not puzzle maps to be solved.

None of those features/flaws would affect me at all if I were to buy this game. They shouldn't impact the score at all.

All of that just sounds like an excuse to slip in always on DRM without a massive outcry, given what kind of game this is. I'm saddened that you buy EA's BS so easily.

I agree on the DRM stuff in principle, but why should the game be penalized for DLC existing? If it is a good game worthy of an X/10 score with exactly what you get out of the box the existence of extra content shouldn't penalize that. You can't judge a game based on what wasn't included in it.

It does run like shit but it always did, it's still very fun. I was playing it recently.

Best Sim City game in my opinion. Everything about how the social features and online works is sounding like it will give this game a lot of legs.

Bring on tonight so I can download the game and not be able to play it until mid day tomorrow ><

Yes, that's all it was. An excuse. They designed the ENTIRE GAME, including the engine they just build from scratch for this purpose, just so they could annoy you with the "DRM".

*sheesh*... Seriously...

Not just for the DRM, to implement F2P mechanics and microtransactions (without making the base game free of course) so they could rape the consumer. That's where EA is transitioning with all of their games.

The size issue is a shame because otherwise the game seems really amazing. I guess there's a possible memory leak with bigger cities or something. No reason not to give the option otherwise.

Oh, so you didn't play the game or are even slightly informed on it. Ok, that explains it.

They bitch and whine about the size of the city....

BUILD A SECOND ONE! Geez.

No mega-cities really stinks.

But this:

Peter: Damn. My schools are overfull. So now my nuclear power plant is being run by morons. Which means it might blow up. Shit. Melted down.
Fucking hell, it's going to blow up again.
I don't understand. They have stopped enrolling in high school. So my education level is falling. So my nuclear power station keeps blowing up. But nothing is telling me WHY they're not enrolled at school. I have plenty of school buses. Well placed bus stops.
Man. Once things start going wrong, they go seriously wrong.

sounds amazing. A full town of Homer's.

I want to see if the game gets criticized for its DRM, arbitrary forced social features, in-game store, and massive amount of DLC at release.

Agreed; those things can fuck up your experience with the game - Diablo 3 is proof enough

I think the game is designed around the concept of multiple cities and social interactions. I also think they want it to run on lower rigs as well. I personally like the design choices they've made because this isn't just a game for the uber hardcore but for casuals who want some action too. There is plenty for long time SC fans though.

I would love for them to patch in an option for bigger cities though but the way their map design is, I think it would require a new set of maps. Either way, I'm going to have 1 profile for the GAF guys and one for my own. Maybe multiples.
