Tomb Raider PC Performance Thread

What the fuck is wrong with this port ?

Seriously Nixxes what have you been doing ? Or is this Nvidia's fault ?

I tried resetting the shadow res setting to low and get it back to high but no, my shadows are still shitty and not "contact hardening" as AMD claims.

Is this what you're expecting to see?

My performance was about 50-60fps with everything maxed up apart from Tesselation and crazyhair....then I got to the shanty town area.. now its chugging a fair bit. Let's hope for some better Nvidia drivers then.

I saw this post on Nvidia's board from a mod.

We are aware of major performance and stability issues with GeForce GPUs running Tomb Raider with maximum settings. Unfortunately, NVIDIA didn’t receive final code until this past weekend which substantially decreased stability, image quality and performance over a build we were previously provided. We are working closely with Crystal Dynamics to address and resolve all game issues as quickly as possible.
In the meantime, we would like to apologize to GeForce users that are not able to have a great experience playing Tomb Raider, as they have come to expect with all of their favorite PC games.

You mad, what are you talking? After messing with crysis3 you should make sure that your desktop is no at 16-bit color. :( No banding in Tomb Raider.

For nvidia users with vsync problems, you have to disable the option "main display only" in the game launcher (to avoid the error) but then activate it from within the game. If you have only one gpu you have to use triplebuffer option but if you have sli, use double buffer.

Tessellation comparisson

Yeah you can definitely tell with Tessellation off. I noticed it right away, thanks for posting the pics to show specifically.

Speaking of the game launcher, I can't even access it. Whenever I try to - my game crashes. I've been making all my changes IN game.

Same story here actually. Just got to that area.

Here's my rig :

i5 3570k stock
8gb ram
MSi 660ti OC 3gb Vram
SSD samsung

Nvidia drivers : 310.90

Played 10/15 min, escaped the cave and no crash, just framerate drops ton 30/40 when entering a new zone.....

Here's my options :

Can't play more, just hope the 310.9 drivers will work!

So far, so good with the Hitman trick.

How does this trick work? I have Inspector, but when I tried to add the Tomb Raider application to the Inspector profile for Hitman, it says "App already tied to the Tomb Raider profile". How do I make another game's profile apply to Tomb Raider? Do I just copy the specific settings into the Tomb Raider profile?

I am detecting a loss in frames, but driver 310.90 has removed the crashing with tessellation turned on.

Either delete the Tomb Raider (2013) profile or remove the exe tied to that profile.

What did you use from Hitman? Just the SLI bits?

I'm wondering this myself... I see no special flags that would really have an effect on anything. But if it works, who cares. I'm about to try it myself.

So the SLI bits work for TR as well, so don't change them?

Delete the Tomb Raider(2013) profile before linking the TR exe to the Hitman profile.

That's what I did. Basically, I deleted the Tomb Raider 2013 profile. Then I went to the Hitman Absolution profile and added the Tomb Raider EXE to it. That was it. Nothing more, nothing less. Didn't touch anything else. Booted up the game. Got the same performance I did before - but now I can run the game with tessellation on without any crashing.

SLI seems to be working fine. Getting same FPS as before. Someone could try adding the TR bits to the SLI portion of Absolution. Not sure what that would do. I just know that leaving everything alone, it's working fine.

peroformance has been great so far on my 7970 ,maintaining 60fps mostly, but once it hits the 2nd huge area
mountain village
, frame rate drops to 30-40ish. anyone else having this problem? everything on max with tessalation and tressfx off

When I'm getting a steady 60 FPS and the FPS drops below that even a little bit, I can feel it in the way the game feels. It just feels like it's slowing down. But when it hovers around 40 for example, it feels smooth.

I'm no expert with PC gaming. Is that normal for PC gaming in general, and is there any way to remedy that?

Heh, fired up the game and tried to hit the options only to be greeted with a "not responding" error message. Great.

Fortunately, the game starts up just fine and runs beautifully. Unfortunately, my PC goes on a boat tomorrow and I won't see it for 6 weeks so I'll have to wait to play it. :(

i7 2600K @ 4.6ghz
16 gig 2133 ram
512g Samsung 840 SSD
GTX 680 (EVGA Percision OC)

Been running on ultimate settings, except for the things that seem to crash and or cause the game to not start.

Framerate is fairly steady (45-60), but does dip in places, like transitioning zones. Using the TressFX hair too. Not quite as awesome as I had hoped, but a step in the right direction.

Hopefully new Nvidia drivers will clear up the framerate issues. Digging the game so far.

What do your benchmark results look like?

You might just be sensitive to FPS drops. You could try locking it to the 40s area so you don't notice the drops anymore.

I'm the same way. Soon as I lose a frame I feel it. Even during cutscenes it bugs me.

Regardless of the performance hit of TressFX, I just don't really like how it looks. Honestly, I think Alice did it better in both aesthetics and obviously performance.

Sounds like you could be using Double Buffering?

Forgot we had a performance thread so I'll repeat my question here.

Is anyone else getting seemingly random flickering in a lot of the foliage? It's like a black tint flicking on and off but I don't always see it. Using a GTX 470.

Could have sworn someone else posted about that in this thread. I don't think there was an answer to what caused it. But I don't think you are alone. Most with higher cards have not reported that issue though.

That's probably it. I am sensitive to framerate drops. When I've got that FPS counter from RadeonPro in the top left corner especially, it feels like I'm simply paying for the privilege to watch an FPS counter dip and swell like the waves of the ocean, rather than playing a videogame.

Doesn't matter what setting I have it on, I feel the difference instantly.

Tessellation fix for nvidia users.

Download nvidia inspector
Open nvidia inspector
Delete Tomb raider 2013 profile
Find hitman absolution profile
Link tombraider.exe
Change if you want af, aa and so on
Press apply button

And now hopefully you have no crash anymore with tessellation on. Have worked for me now an hour with no crash, use to crash before after 1-2 minutes after activating tessellation.

Thanks goes to a guy on steam for this fix.

Cheers, added to the OP.

Can anyone confirm that you can remap controls to mouse buttons and arrow keys? One of the things that bugged me in Crystal dynamics tomb raider games is the inability to do so.

Thanks!

3570K, 7970, stock, nets about 52fps average in the benchmark with everything max. I may disable some stuff as the framerate definitely dips in game and the tressfx often chugs in cutscenes.

I have experienced some graphical jank, mostly a magic river near the start that superimposed itself on everything.

Game looks great otherwise, though.

Yea I also get that flickering. It's sporadic so I forgot to mention it a while back.

Alright just making sure my gpu isn't dying or anything. This game really makes my card scream and it makes a whirring sound I'm not too used to hearing.

GTX 680
i5 3570K @3.4
16GB Ram

All settings maxed (including Tressfx) - 40fps bench
All settings maxed (no Tressfx) - 60fps bench

20fps is a normal frame loss for Tressfx, yeah?

Yes, that is completely normal for an Nvidia card. I have a GTX 590, which is comparable to a 680 and I get about the same (locked 60, or ~45 with TressFX).

Played about 30 minutes so far with this rig:

i5 2500k (stock)
GTX 670 4gb Factory OC newest beta drivers
16gb RAM

Crashes like a mofo. Maybe I'll try the Inspector trick. Everything pumped up to max except TressFX and no AA, running at a fairly steady 60 with some dips down into the 50s when things get crazy. Using EVGA Precision X noticed two things: The first is that my card seems to be underclocked the whole time, staying around 706 mhz despite turning off adaptive power management. Secondly, it's telling me that the game is maxing out the card's RAM, which I've rarely seen (though Hitman did use most of it as well). Going to keep plugging away but hopefully Nvidia and Nixxes can work fast on fixing this.

Edit: Benchmark gave me an average of 53.8 fps.
