Tomb Raider PC Performance Thread

Besides Tesselation and TressFX what settings are the biggest performance sinks? I'm guessing High SSAO is also pretty big? What does High Precision do?

High Precision: This poorly defined name describes a feature that adds darker shades and different intensities of light to the game. In short, it makes the game look more realistic. Major performance hit.

Time to add it to the OP?

it's 48hrs after the release no one reads the OP they just come to the end and ask...

It's been in the OP for about 12 hours now. ;)

Bahh sneaky I was looking for it like this, you kids and your fancy hyperlinks
Tessellation fix for nvidia users.

Download nvidia inspector
Open nvidia inspector
Delete Tomb raider 2013 profile
Find hitman absolution profile
Link tombraider.exe
Change if you want af, aa and so on
Press apply button
And now hopefully you have no crash anymore with tessellation on. Have worked for me now an hour with no crash, use to crash before after 1-2 minutes after activating tessellation.

Thanks goes to a guy on steam for this fix.

Especially when you can get it for like $35 with promo codes. This game is amazing and they really deserve the money.

That being said, I can't believe my ancient PC is getting me a minimum of 30 FPS on ultra setting with just TressFX and tessilation turned off.

CPU: Core 2 Duo @ 3.6 ghz

Pretty sad a game with an AMD feature doesn't even run right on AMD crossfire setups (other people w/crossfire are complaining about this problem and poor performance issues).

Time for a Geforce Titan? Maybe...

Except that GIF is on a Titan.

Regardless, they need to patch it. I have terrible performance issues. (Tri)-crossfire isn't supported and I'm getting in the single digits on the benchmark on my 4.4GHz setup.

What kind of visual impact does Depth of Field have? After messing with the various settings I found lowering DOF from Ultra to Normal gives me a pretty big boost in FPS alone. (GTX 480 / i7 920 @ 3.36ghz)

I haven't noticed much of a difference between DoF on high and ultra. It and tessellation aren't that big of a deal looks wise. I have a similar set up and I find that turning off tessellation and SSAO gives me a huge FPS boost without any really noticeable differences in visual quality and lets me keep DoF on ultra. Effects like these are nice but their minimal improvements aren't really worth the performance hit. 60 fps is better than removing slight jaggies from a pot or table.

I think dof blurs objects that are far off into the distance. Like mountain ranges and stuff.

less bokeh. basically things in the distance dont get blurred as much sorry these are from a cut scene, but I'm at a point where it really has little noticeable effect due to all the other effects onscreen.

off

normal

ultra

this was taken with the DOF at Normal, with it off the background would be completely sharp like the foreground in the image with ultra on, the blur would be stronger further out so the background would be less defined than in my shot.

hope this helps.

I am really surprised how well this game runs on my moderate rig. It looks AMAZING.

I wish I could stop fiddling with settings though. I hate that about myself and PC games. When I drop a game into my 360 whatever it is what it is. On my computer its SSAO, depth of field.. high, normal etc etc it consumes me for that fps bump.

lol

still I am so glad I have this on my PC and not a console.

Is it just a crossfire issue? Tressfx looks great on my single 7870xt

The game looks great in motion, some areas and scenes are a bit janky looking but overall it's a very very pleasing to the eye game
TressFX sucks though and has been terribly implemented, almost feels like a publicity stunt to try sell more on the PC or something as a gimmick. It not only shaved 20 fps off my performance (GTX 670, i5 3570k) but it doesn't look great either, her hair flies all over the place. They need a config that lets us adjust the rigidness/stiffness of her hair

While the guy was wrong about the gif - is the issue Sli/Crossfire? Do single GPUS have the same issues with TressFX?

Because that gif was Titans in Sli. I think the guy was talking about a Titan as a single GPU.

It is somehow painful to me that there are people pirating this game. It seems like a very good game, and I would hate for a good PC game to be pirated to a point where the developers would resort to bad DRM.

TressFX is awesome and looks great. I think most people with issues are running Nvidia cards so that is unfortunate :(

Hmm, sounds like trying to play this game on a 2011 laptop with a (then) mid/high end Nvidia GPU (which usually handles console ports nicely) is pretty much a no-go? Would I do better to go with the PS3 version?

Why would you get that impression? The game has a nice wide range of settings which can affect performance in a big way. I suspect my desktop isn't as powerful as your laptop and the game looks and plays great (considerably more so than the console version) with most of the settings turned up. If you have no problems with other console ports, you'll have no problems with performance on this one.

If you're talking about an m550/555, I haven't got a max setting gaming experience out of that since before Skyrim.

Well, I did try and play D3 outside once but that didn't last long because of the glare.

Yeah, it's a GT 555M. But I'm not necessarily talking about max settings, just noticeably above console levels at 720p with nice framerates (which doesn't have to mean 60fps).

Is the very first spash screen after launching the game with the dev logos supposed to look bugged out (black flashing artifact looking things), or is it my system? It only happens on this first screen. Once the menu is shown, everything looks normal

Get the same thing. Pretty sure it's supposed to look that way. Maybe someone else can confirm.

Couple hours in, did the "Hitman trick" before starting and have had no issues whatsoever on my i7-2600k / 8 GB ram / GTX 570. Running on Ultimate with TressFX disabled, so I guess that's Ultra(?), averaging between 45-60 fps at 1920x1200. Do get the occasional stutter, especially during saving / loading sequences (which is odd as I'm on a SSD) but I can't wait to play this once all the bugs are ironed out. It's incomparably beautiful on PC. Like, the first hour took me two because I was panning the camera around in gaping awe constantly. My terrible Steam screenshots do it no justice whatsoever: http://steamcommunity.com/id/metsallica/screenshots/

supposed to do that

Damn, I wish there was a demo of this. Or just a benchmark, or whatever. Can't decide between PC and PS3...

Even if you have to lower some settings, the PC version still looks and runs better than the console version.

Most of the crash issues are people trying to max out all the settings. What GPU do you have as well? Seems to be Nvidia is having the most problems, due to them not giving Nvidia the game code until a couple days before release.

Funny how the only difference between "ultra" and "ultimate" is the TressFX

I run about 30-35% slower on Ultimate at 1080p compared to Ultra

i5 2500k @ stock
GTX570
12GB

probably about 30-35 FPS (never below 30) at 1080p resolution.

tressfx is a huge resource hog for sure. It's worth it though i think

I answered that above, but it's a GT 555M, a 2011 mid/high end laptop GPU. I would obviously not try to run it maxed out, but if I could get better-than-console quality (which I usually can with console ports) I'm happy.

If I could stay above 30fps with it on I would take the hit. I do think it's nice for sure.

I just can't justify going below 30 or lowering the resolution for it.

The 570 has been an absolute beast for me, but as we move closer to next-gen it's going to start to show its age unfortunately.

My apologies for not seeing your original post.

I don't know enough about that card, and what levels it could reach. I don't game on laptops. So I understand your post more now.

I never thought about that before, but it would be nice if they did have a demo/benchmark on Steam to test out before you buy. Even in games where your specs surpass the recommended, some games just don't run very well on certain set ups.

Hum, I seem to be CPU limited in this game with an i7 920 @ 3.5 GHz. Some of the later big open areas drop me to aroun 45fps. Dropped the res (from 1600p to 1200p) and frame rate stayed the same.

The game is not very stable now, better opt for the console version of your choice.

The god rays look painfully low-res for me, but I think enabling SSAA fixed that. That doesn't make sense to me, though.

Not sure what you are getting at, but a whole bunch of the "Nvidia the way it's meant to be played" sponsored titles didn't run well on AMD hardware at launch, do you think AMD got the final code on a even footing???

Its one thing to partner with a GPU vendor, but its another thing entirely to only send the competing company the game to fine tune drivers the weekend before the game's release, especially when it was completed 3 and a half weeks ago.

This isn't rocket science.
