Movies You've Seen Recently III: The Third Chapter

Anyone here see his first movie Hard Eight? I'm thinking about doing a PT Anderson filmography, and it looks like that would be the first one if I go in chronological order.

While Hard Eight, or Sydney, as PTA likes to call it, is good, it certainly feels like a first movie. Personally, I prefer some of his shorts better. Cigarettes and Coffee is amazing, and his high school version of Boogie Nights is astounding if just for the fact that he made it while in high school.

And no love for Punch Drunk Love? My second favorite PTA after Boogie Nights.

Done watching Dancer in the Dark. I hated it
Hey another comment that makes me (not) want to watch it! I'm intrigued but afraid. It's like Schrodinger cat. But with my brain.

~~

I really liked Hard Eight the first time around, that was before I was into PTA. It has been a few years since I saw it + for reasons unknown I decided to skip it on my recent PTA filmography rewatch as well :|

Rise of the Guardians - Not as polished as 'big' animated features. Not a fan of the character design, but I thought the plot (despite its cliches) was original and fun **½
Mildred Pierce - if you liked it then you should have put a ring on it ****
Identity Thief - Bateman gotta eat. Zero laughs, zero stars.
Cha no aji AKA The Taste of Tea - Wonderful heartfelt insight into a Japanese family and their individual troubles. You know the kind ***½
Africa (the BBC Earth series) - Interesting, thrilling and funny. BBC has basically perfected making these and they look amazing on blu-ray. The Sahara episode was boring though ****
The Sunset Limited - The acting was fine, the dialogue was fine. But there's only so much one can do with a dialogue-driven movie like this, so about an hour in it got kinda old. ***
Beginners - Such a lovely movie. Fell in love with Melanie Laurent again. With Ewan as well ****½

I Watched Lincoln on a Plane. Need's a re-watch. Upon first watch, Tommy Lee Jones stole the show for me. But the movie feels incomplete to me. I may have missed things but I don't think I understood, from the movie, why some senators were for or against.

Arbitrage- same plane ride. Good movie. Geer sucked in it. Movie was good in spite of him. Reminded me of Bad Lieutenant Port of Call New Orleans.

Started watching Argo, did not like what I saw. Everyone is running from one desk to another for no reason, they have this incredible sense of urgency and it's been over 60 days! The movie also appeared to be bi-polar. incredibly serious subject then let's go party in LA. WTF? Didn't finish though, I reserve judgement.

Brokeback Mountain. l liked it. Ang Lee is great. Fuck off.

I'VE HAD IT WITH THESE MOTHERFUCKIN LINCOLNS ON MY MOTHERFUCKIN PLANE!

I know, delta shows a lincoln ad every time you load a movie, tv show, whatever, right after takeoff and after the movie is done. Then they show you a movie about lincoln. too much lincoln.

Maybe if you like Brokeback Mountain it makes you gay or something? Or if you like Ang Lee it makes you Taiwanese?

I rewatched The Wedding Banquet a few nights ago. The best scene is still the part when the dad reveals that he speaks English to his son's lover.

Local cinema doing Polanski movies, and this week it's repulsion. Worth watching? I've seen a couple of Polanski flicks and loved them.

Yes! It's my favourite movie of his.
Also if they're playing Knife in the Water, see that as well. It's pretty hot.

End of Watch was fucking incredible. Made me cry. Everyone was right, the two leads' chemistry was great. The two girls were also really good. I like the chick who was also in 50/50.

Diabolique
I don't really have a whole lot to say, this is a great film. Suspenseful, well paced, interesting characters, I pretty much liked everything. Superb last 10-15 minutes. 8/10

I've seen those too, and I enjoyed them much more. It was kind of the same problem I had with Precious; where it feels like the movie is pulling all shit possible to make the character's story sadder. It just didn't feel genuine to me, so I wasn't moved; the fact that I didn't like the style didn't help. I don't say the movie is shit or anything, but I found it mediocre. Bjork pulled an excellent performance though.
i liked dancer in the dark...

antichrist and melancholia are some gutter level shit with the former being cut and pasted from don't look now/possession.

watch europa/breaking the waves!

Just finished watching End Of Watch. The way it was filmed(the handheld view throughout a lot of it) was somewhat unique, but otherwise I didn't think much of it.

I loved that the film shot its premise in the foot by clearly establishing why they (and the villains) were filming and then they cut to omnipotent "cameras" that no one was using (most of which were shot like handheld cameras).

I liked the film up until the
cartel puts a hit on them. Why pinpoint just them? Yeah, they maybe kicked up a bit more than they should have at the start, but most of what they did was just them responding to calls like any other officer. Seems really excessive given that they are cops.

I wouldn't say they're shit. I don't feel strongly about them, but they're passable (I really liked the first half of Melancholia). I couldn't tolerate DitD.

imo the only good thing about those two is the cinematography. liking antichrist is inconceivable to me.

like the dialogue is litterally gibberish. and that dichotomy between rational man and psycho bitch has been done so many times before in just about every genre that its just so tired now.

Yeah, pretty much just so the rest of the movie can play out the way it did.

life of pi - um. i had no idea that this shit was good? love it when one actor carries an entire movie.

i guess this is also the time where i mention that i loved ang's Hulk.

I think it would have made more sense
for them to cockily follow a lead they shouldn't and find hard evidence against the villain crew (on their cameras) and the villains go after them to destroy the evidence.

it's a comic book movie through and through. probably the best in the superhero genre other than spider man 2.

like the poodle shit was dumb, but the movie had everything. well shot with style and flair, nice plot, and great acting.

Just watched Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. Quite possibly the most heart wrenching movie I have ever seen. And so beautifully shot! It's just not fair how much of a visual master Park Chan-wook is.

The Matrix: Reloaded

I haven't seen this probably since 2006ish. I didn't think the sequels were that bad, just not as good as the first movie. What the fuck is this shit? I just saw Neo cum in Trinity while a techno rave is going on. The first half hour is BAD. Dialog is bad, some shockingly bad green screening, and the tone and feel is completely different from the first movie. Cheesy music cues, bizarre speaking patterns, instant sex drama. What is going on?

I thought that scene with Morpheus, Obama, and Brian Wilson was pretty strange, too. I didn't know Brian and Obama were actors.

EDIT: Holy shit, they really have a zoom into the clit of a woman having an orgasm from eating cake, all in code. What the fuck is this movie? This movie is so weird. None of this shit makes any sense.

EDIT 2: God, this keeps getting worse. I can see why people hate this. It makes the first movie completely pointless and meaningless. It's literally "hey, all that stuff you did in the first movie? Didn't really matter, it was all part of the plan, a plan that repeats itself over and over, you aren't the first, you aren't the last, peace out yo." Then Neo chooses to let the entire human race die for some pussy? Come on, what kind of savior is that? Also, I can't figure out what the point of the machines with Doc Oc arms is. What do those things actually do?

Well, it's kind of your run-of-the-mill forbidden love romance. What elevates it is that every character in the movie is a victim, and Ang Lee has this amazing way of using the environment to characterize or enhance what the characters are going through. You could argue it's been done before and I would retort; never this well.

That said, Lee through us hetero's a bone with Hathaway tities. Good man.

Carnage - The great cast make this far more entertaining than it should be. John C. Reilly is the man.
I love this movie. Every time the couple is about to leave they get dragged back in. The dialogue and the cast is just great, so many good quotes.

Finally got around to watching The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford for the first time last night......goddamn! Casey Affleck was fantastic, just so, so good in this. Brad Pitt, who usually has been good at best in things I've seen him in, was almost as good as Casey. A slow, slow burner, but the best kind. And of course, Roger Deakins brings the eye candy.

On first watch I can say that was one of the best movies I've seen in quite awhile. Reminds me I've wanted to check out Chopper, and now I want to see Killing Them Softly even more.

Picked this one out from the samurai movie thread:

The Sword of Doom

Beautiful cinematography and amazing fight scenes, but the story is kind of confusing and--given the total lack of resolution--ultimately pretty disappointing.

I'm totally with you, man - my favourite film of last year. Can't wait for the blu-ray, which apparently has
an even darker alternate ending
.
