Best Roguelikes Available?

ftl-front.jpg

I'm not a big fan of rogue games, but FTL is seriously fun to play in short bursts and the soundtrack makes that short amount of time even better

Does Spelunky count as a Roguelike? Because that game is infinitely awesome.

Seriously, it's free on pc. Or go play the trial on xbox, what a game.

I love Binding of Isaac and FTL, but those have been mentioned so I'm going to throw out this gem, Mercury

It's free and simply amazing. It's got some pedigree too but I don't believe in listing stuff like that. Let's just say it comes from a guy who is immersed in game design.

Dungeon Crawl is great and actually attempts to be balanced.

Nethack and SLASH'em are extremely bloated by comparison, but the attention to detail is absolutely insane. The game lets you do just about anything you could logically think of with your items, regardless of how suicidal it may be.

People who recommend ASCII roguelikes remind me of people who swear by emacs or vi over a graphical text editor.

I'm assuming ASCII means its just a command line interface with no real 'graphics' to speak of?

If so....ya, none of those games please.

EDIT: yup, that's exactly what it means. None of those games please.
ADOM!

This is what a true roguelike looks like, not fancy schmancy graphics:

I thought Adom has sprites and a tileset?

As someone who is now too spoiled by tilesets:

Nethack (with a tileset of your choosing)
IVAN (sinfully unknown because of halted development)
Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup
Binding of Isaac
Dungeons of Dredmore

There are lots more but I recommend trying each one out and you'll generally get a feeling for what kind you like.

I've always wondered where Yoda Stories and Indy's Desktop Adventures fit regarding Roguelikes. They weren't particularly punishing or hard, but they certainly had a lot in common with the heavier candidates of the genre.

No one has mentioned my favorite roguelike: elona.
http://homepage3.nifty.com/rfish/index_e.html
It has an open world, tons of sidequests, and plenty of interactivity with the world.
You can have a pet loli (which you can marry), come across mutations which can have positive or negative side effects, catch monsters and breed them or use them ala pokemans, there are even online aspects of the game. As you're playing, if you're connected the game will tell you when other players have gotten legendary items. There is also a customizable home that you get, during your travels you can come across portals that will send you into other players homes.
It's definitely worth checking out for fans of roguelikes that want a little more than just a dungeon crawl RL.

Z.H.P. on the PSP! It's NIS' take on the genre and incredibly charming

No particular order, some modern roguelikes:

FTL: Faster Than Light
Binding of Isaac
Dungeons of Dredmor

People who recommend ASCII roguelikes remind me of people who swear by emacs or vi over a graphical text editor.

Wait what? The first two are not RL.

I keep hearing about this game. Aren't they making a sequel for the vita?

Are there any roguelike games that dont have incredibly crude graphics other than DoomRL? I was super interested in that ADOM game but was disappointed to find that the tileset they are adding is still in development and the game as is, is just an ASCII game.

Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is kind of plain-looking, but it's easy to tell what's going on.

I would say Nethack but then again I use VIM all the time while programming. =( *yells at cloud* Though inaccessible, Nethack is something I still remember fondly. I only ever ascended once (as an archeologist of all things?), and it was on a tiny handheld computer, on a slightly out of date Nethack version.

That said, I also use Visual Studio, graphical text editors, and I've played FTL, so yes FTL is a nice modern approach. :P

yeah. might want to change the thread title then...

Not everyone, as there ARE plenty of great fitting suggestions in here, but yeah, seeing straight-up action games in this thread is goof. Some might be blown away to learn about all the roguelikes you can find in arcades!

I know a lot of roguelike purists wont agree with me but i really like Dungeons of Dredmor, the game is incredibly fun and has some hilarious moments.

Same here. One of my favorites of the last few years, and I still haven't beaten yet. The game is so fun and charming that I don't mind being bad at it.

Nethack will always be my favorite. Though I haven't spent as much time with it in recent years I don't know that I will ever stop playing it completely. I've ascended 75% of the available classes, have put hundreds of hours into it, have read every spoiler and wiki I could find, and a decade later, I am still learning things about the game that surprise me.

I also love the shiren series of games and am pissed off that they haven't been getting US releases.
