Sony to push for 16 million PS4 shipments in 2013

There would need to be a phenomenon behind it beyond that of even the Wii for the justification to ship that many units. Right now they haven't shown anything that goes beyond the core gamer demographic. Also, Sony should be treading carefully after Vita and also their ongoing financial situation.

First of all, it should be clarified this isn't a Sony forecast.

Second, I would read this to mean that someone has looked at expected supply rate for launch and extrapolated what that would mean in terms of annual shipments. For example, if Sony wants a supply rate of 1-1.3m units a month in the run up to launch, that would suggest an annual shipment rate of 12-16m units per year if you used a straight extrapolation. But it would mean, for 2013, something like 3-4m units.

So it's not very useful as a number, if that's the case...since supply rate will vary after the launch months and will depend on demand. Sony's own demand forecasts will be something different.

Right. But 3-4 million units is still a lofty figure. Sony would need zero supply issues and a lot of demand to hit that target if the console releases in November.

I can't see this at all. I can't even imagine that they're that bullish about the PS4, regardless of the positive press. If they're expecting anything even close to those numbers they'll have to launch in all three regions and at a good price. HYPE
if true
!

Is this going to be like a world wide September launch?
"Holiday 2013" is all we have, for NA/Japan.

the phenomenon is current gen blue-balls.

For reference:

PS2:

Fiscal year ending March 31, 2000: 1.41m
Fiscal year ending March 31, 2001: 9.20m
Fiscal year ending March 31, 2002 18.07m

PS3:

Fiscal year ending March 31, 2007: 3.5m
Fiscal year ending March 31, 2008: 9.1m
Fiscal year ending March 31, 2009: 10.1m

They probably mean PS3+PS4.

Yeah. Even if annualized, 16 million PS4-only shipments is a VERY lofty goal for Sony. They would have to really bet on the PS4 to be a breakout hit. If so, I hope it works out for them, because I don't exactly see that happening.

I see lukewarm sales initially, blunted by a high price point of entry and a lack of initial casual appeal.

if they plan to launch wordwide they need at least 10-15 mln. even if they overship stores those consoles will sell

Well, if they ship 16millions this year they won't have to ship new ones before 2015, so there's that.

Maybe a typo for 1.6?

There is no phenomenon. Even my friends who are are massively in to their games are apathetic about the next generation, saying they've got backlogs to clear first. No doubt they'll jump in eventually but I think it'll be a slow start, especially if the prices are high.

This has to be fake.
The PS4 isn't launching until the holiday season.
Are they really believing they could sell 16 million consoles by the end of Q1 2014?
I seriously don't think so.

Its seems really redonk.. I want to call fake to.

I mean what if the first batch of consoles has a hardware issue or something. They seriously going to make 16 million at once and take that risk?

Although I predict if the games hold up the ps4 handily outselling Durango.

Fixed man. Seriously, games, games, games. Specs are nada without the games that use them. People will buy this over Durango based in the games, not the specs, although specs being good is obviously comforting.

That's not even close to feasible in any scenario. They should be really happy with 5 million sold by June 2014.

16 million? Oh god. Sony....stop trying to shoot for the sun.

That's a LOT of launch units. If the retailers even demand that much, we'll see a lot sitting on store shelves come January.

And? I don't see a problem with that.
The way I'm interpreting it, they're aiming for 16 million units shipped to stores in 2013, not 16 million units sold to consumers.
If this means we'll see a global launch with no shortage, then that would be pretty friggen awesome.

16 million PS4 shipped in 2013 is not going to happen. 16 million PS4 from November 2013 to November 2014....is a very difficult goal to achieve.

16 million PS3 + PS4 from November 2013 to November 2014-----now that is a very realistic estimate.

1 Sony forecast by fiscal years not calendar.

2 Sony tend to group hardware together in forecasts. ie. PS3 + PS4

3 If there was even a chance the article was accurate, not only would it have to be a global release, it would also have to be dirt cheap and/or have COD exclusive (not happening)

This was left out from the OP

The sources pointed out that the PS4 will be manufactured by Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) and Pegatron Technology, and the player have just begun the processes of request for quotation (RFQ) for the related components. Therefore, the component shipments are unlikely to start until August, but should allow the machine to show up before the year-end holidays in 2013.

Im sorry but even shipped that number is crazy.. stores would be packed full of Ps4s like they are going out of style.

Yeah it's shipped not sold, but I can't imagine retailers putting money into such expensive products that take up space and wont make them any money for at least 6 months.
