Movies You've Seen Recently III: The Third Chapter

Have you seen other films by Polanski? Needless to say, his perfection of portraying the "cramped locale" is seen much earlier in Rosemary's Baby.

Don't forget Repulsion and The Tenant, which make up his "apartment trilogy".

repulsion is great but it trips me out since i saw it after knowing what polanski was convicted for.

ghost writer is an amazing thriller. was one of my favorite films that year. you should check out carnage immediately jtb. the plot sounds simple (and it is) but waltz gives a very entertaining performance (far removed from his usual tarantino schtick) and the dialogue is hilarious.

Thanks for the suggestions; I've seen Rosemary's Baby (along with Chinatown and the Pianist), but not Repulsion or the Tenant. I'll have to check those two out, and I was going to see Carnage anyways, but I'll be sure to move it to the top of my movie queue and watch it when I get a chance. Good to know about Waltz; he was great as Landa/Schultz (less so in Green Hornet, but hey, gotta pay the bills) but I'm excited to see him take on a different sort of role.

Not watched them yet but I just ordered Assassination of Jesse James and History of Violence Blu-Rays. How blown is my mind going to be?

Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Cock.

hahahaha, pretty much. it'll convert some people, i'm sure.

This movie was kind of embarrassing coming from someone who made something as artful as Hunger.

I disagree. Shame is pretty goddamn artful to me. An all-around well-made film. Solid performances across the board.
It's a great example of a cliffhanger done right.

Assassination has nice cinematography but i like Violence more as film. One of them had an ending that almost made me cry.

Make sure to watch eastern promises if you're hankering for more cronenbergXviggo.

Thought I was the only one who was really underwhelmed by Shame. Fassbender is pretty much my favorite actor working, but I thought the whole movie was trying way too hard.

The shit dialogue, the overly sentimental music, the bore of a plot. Nicole Beharie (sp?) was the highlight of the film.

^ This much

Do you just mean haven't watched them on Blu-Ray? Or that you haven't seen either movie period?

Very interesting. The movies we watched might not have been movies that I might have watched on my own, so it was nice discovering new stuff. The lectures (ranging from 20-45 minutes) were very informative and eye-opening, pointing out several details and the (possible) meaning behind them that I did not see myself.

Sounds cool, thanks for the feedback.

I don't overly like or dislike Shame myself, but I've never forgotten AlternativeUlster's review of Shame being a story of sex addition as if written by a virgin.

I saw Bourne Legacy I actually thought it was pretty good despite the negativity. Best Bourne movie since the original and alot better than that shaky cam shit.

How could you even think that, maybe 50% of the entire last thread was spent debating shame. Which is awesome by the way, though I guess I understand the reaming from AU and swoon (swoon hates it right?). At least they...

...provide actual criticisms beyond LCD stuff like "boring!" which is one of the worst ways to critique a movie. I guess I'll give you shit dialogue (mainly because I don't have any of it in my head at the moment, I know the two times I watched it it was pretty nicely written) but the overly sentimental music was definitely not more sentimental than the director intended. the score was knowingly melodramatic

Fantastic documentary but...
The family seemed a little too trusting, I don't necessarily agree with the premise that they killed him but there was at least some serious mass delusion going on. It was immediately apparent on the archival footage that he wasn't their kid, while at the same time he was telling outlandish stories to the FBI investigators about secret eye drops and military conspiracies.
oh yeah, I agree. But remember, the private investigator said that the family wanted him back so bad, they'd accept anyone really (paraphrasing but that's the gist of it.) I don't think any of the secret eye drops and milltary conspiracy stuff happened, it was just another way for him to keep the lie going.

But why didn't they do a DNA test first?! :lol you'd think that would be the first thing they did!

Well, that was bleak. Even darker than Ran. I really liked it though, it might have gone on for a little too long and I'd probably rank it below the other two Kurosawa noirs I've seen (doesn't have the intensity of High and Low or the great Mifune/Shimura interplay of Stray Dog), but still a great film. The opening wedding scene in particular was just riveting.

The thing about Shame to me is that it never went far enough until the very very end. Uh oh. Man watches porn? Fantasizes about co-workers? Jerks off? Has sex? Apparently, according to Shame, every man ever is a sex addict. Beautiful movie though. And if I learned one thing: it's not gay if it's Fassbender.

Also, just saw Stoker for the third time. I think I'v seen it enough times now. Still an amazing movie!

28 Days Later
I feel the exact same way about it when I saw it in 2002:
Great until they
hit the security checkpoint.

28 Weeks Later
What a load of rubbish. This movie was complete shit.
Moral of the story: Kids ruin everything.

Finally saw Your Highness.....

Hated it from beginning to end and found nothing funny about it at all. I dont know if it was me but the juvenile jokes in a medieval setting just doesnt work at all. And "the trophy" was stupid. Waste of 2 hours.

I should rewatch this, maybe. I love 28DL but only remember 3 things from the sequel; utter disappointment, the marvelous openingscene and the scene with the chopper/lawnmower.

Cul-De-Sac - Pointless and crude with unlikable characters, or was that the point? **
Alfie (1966) - ***
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - The first time I saw this I was a bit underwhelmed and I had a hard time judging this movie because of expectations and love for the original trilogy, so I was glad to revisit it. A lot of the ingredients that make the LotR movies work are there: the thrills, sense of adventure and the visual style which has evolved nicely making the movie and its special effects pure eyecandy. It does however lack the emotional bond with the group of characters as a whole. Besides Gandalf (whom we already know) and Bilbo (obviously), most of the dwarves get a line or two (or none!) and so it's hard to care for them. I hope this will change with the coming of its sequels. However, it really is just top notch fantasy, we don't get a lot of it in this scope in modern cinema so fans of the genre should treasure it. I'm really glad I liked this a lot more than the first time, because I really wanted to ****

Also; Thanks for the quick bail
eagles
, but you could have dropped them of a bit closer, I mean come on.

Saw Seven Psychopaths. Unbelievably entertaining. Has a few dark moments, but I found it funnier and more light hearted than In Bruges. Loved the 3 main characters. Pretty damn slick flick for sure. Can't wait to see what McDonagh makes next. This movie was definitely top 10 of last year.

End of Watch - Catching up on some 2012 movies I missed and wow, what a surprise this one is. Really enjoyed it. The Chemistry between Gyllenhaal and Pena is great, Kendrick is as cute as ever and
manly tears were shed
.

Can someone spoil the ending of Trouble With the Curve (the Clint Eastwood baseball movie) for me?
Does Eastwood's character die in this film? I'm looking for a feel-good sports movie I can share with my dad, but he's in his 80's and I don't want to show him a movie that winds up being about an old man dying.

Please spoiler tag your answer, of course.

Thats all this movie had going for it. Everything was else was so massively butchered, predictable and dumb, the 'chemistry' doesn't even come close to making up for it.

I literally laughed out loud at some of the bad guy's lines. Such a joke.

Admittedly the use of 'fuck' every 2 words by the bad guys was pretty cringe-worthy.

I saw Dead Man Down last night. I loved it and I give it a 9/10. A really nice movie, part romance, part revenge thriller.

I can't be the only one who liked this movie. There seems to be no discussion on GAF about it.

The best adaptation of PKD book I have seen. Yes I know, blade runner, whatever.

It's quite good, no doubt. I might feel the same way in a few years as I want to let A Scanner Darkly gestate in my brain for a while. I've seen it a few times but it has gotten better with each viewing.

Blade Runner is so fucking good, though. Legendarily good, in my opinion, and I don't yet feel that way about A Scanner Darkly. That's why I think I'll need a while to really sort out which is better.

Cul-De-Sac - Pointless and crude with unlikable characters, or was that the point? **
Pointless and crude, maybe, but unlikable? Lionel Stander simply kills that role! And Francoise Dorléac and Donald Pleasance are much too good for this movie. Man, I thought it was funny, and the overall themes are chillingly brought to their absurd conclusion.

Savages - I liked it a lot. From time to time it did feel bit too long and unnecessary, lot of the stuff didn't add that much to the plot nor to the characters. It was still gripping movie from start to end. I especially loved the action scenes, too bad there weren't more of them :b

My wife and I bought "Due Date" with robert downey jr from target for $7. We figured for 7 bucks it wouldnt hurt if the movie wasnt good, but we ended up greatly enjoying it. a bunch of funny scenes.
