UK game buying: what does "as new" mean?

I've bought a few games on Ebay from the UK and occasionally the auction says "Resident Evil Zero AS NEW."

But most of the time I get the games used and they certainly aren't in new condition.

Can anyone explain this term to me? Maybe Americans use it but I've never heard it otherwise.

There was a thread about somebody buying a "used" "copy" of Forza Motorsport at a retailer with hilarious / tragic outcome, but I don't remebember the title.

people in the UK just say it all the time to make their sale quicker.

You could look at a ford fiesta thats done 150,000 miles and they'll put AS NEW on the advert 'cus they hoovered it out..it will break down shortly after you bought it.

I keep away from as new items.

As new is fine if its an electrical item etc, that’s hardly been used, but its just basically second hand still.

They got the CD out of the box, ran it down some rusty nails, dropped the box in the sink that is currently holding left over fish and chips with extra sauce and ripped several pages out of the manual to make hats.

Translation:

Second-hand, used, unwrapped, probably spat upon and used for asswiping duties before realising I could probably pass this on to another poor schmuck for a few bucks and get a bit more for it if I washed it off with a bit of a scrub and sellotaped the box back together and stuck "As new" on the advert.
