What do Steam Machines mean for Sony and PlayStation moving forward?

It'll sell to the same audience as the Steamdeck, I.e. existing PC gamers & the hardcore who'll buy any new piece of hardware going.

Unless it offers something very special at a good price this a 5-10m unit device.

It doesn't mean anything for them. Majority of Playstation sales comes from people that have it as a top of mind brand for video-games that was built over years, and not from hardcore gamers that are aware of new devices and willing to change platform. Furthermore, Steam is not in the same league to push a new hardware globally. It will be good for Steam but will not hurt Sony in anyway.

It means Playstation consoles and Store will be eventually over. PS Store can't compete against Steam. MS, with their trillions, tried and failed.

I don't see a near future where Playstation stop releasing their games on Steam, or better, remove their current games on Steam. This is the only way for them to survive long term.

Hence Playstation Store is doomed. It's just a matter of when.

So technically Sony would literally play a direct role in the downfall of their own platform.

When things turn sour they'll continue this path till PlayStation is no more. Sabotaging a lucrative platform business to third party software publisher.
Begs the question do you think bringing an end to PlayStation is Sonys new endgame or were Sony's off-console plans caught off guard after learning PCs can also connect to a television?

100% depends on the entry price.

if Steam Machine comes in at $500 (it wont) it would be a disruptive force and make alot of console gamers take a second look and get an entry into the PC market, give them a taste they may stick around.

If its above $700 its DOA, a niche market that has 0 effect on the console crowd.

Additionally, even if it is $500, if Sony succeeds in launching a powerful PS6 at $500 or $600 (I also dont think thats going to happen with the state of the world right now), it'll completely wipe any interest from the console crown away from the Steam Machine in 2027.

Really though, what I think we should all hope for, is Steam Machine being a good enough success in the PC space that devs take it seriously and start making sure all their games will at least run on it (even at minimum spec), not because any of us want that low end hardware, but rather because it will finally give us a solution to the Microsoft problem, allowing us to kick that fucking company to the curb for good (at least regarding gaming).

When Steam starts to release consoles then yes, PS Store will slowly become obsolete. Why buy a game on PS Store when I can buy the same game (with PC options, free online) on the much better Steam store that will have more games and actually exclusive PC games + almost all PS and Xbox games. For now it's not the case obviously.

For now they are stupidly enticing their customers to migrate to PC ecosystem.

And on PS6 there likely won't be one exclusive game on that console, all games will likely be released on Steam (hence on Steam Deck 2 and Steam console) : GT8, Astro-bot 2, Bloodborne remake and all the others. Good for PC gamers (who don't care about those games BTW, but whatever if it pleases the execs in charge to earn a few millions).

And MS also played a direct role into the end of Xbox consoles. They put all their games on Steam / PC day one and that was the beginning of the end of their hardware business. Like them Sony will become a third party publisher.

In a few decades there will be mobile gaming, Steam and Nintendo. Maybe a Chinese console, that could happen.

All of that if they continue releasing their games on Steam. Yes Sony have been stupid from the start with their PC strategy. Many of us have been saying this from the start in 2020.

Depends on price especially with the 8GB VRAM cause even casuals knows 8GB of VRAM sucks so the price would have to appeal to a decent amount of folks.

If it's below 700 the base edition than I can still see some interest from a good amount of folks. If it's over 700 even for the base edition than it's going to be crap.

Console players won't be interested in it for that price.

PC players with weaker PCs will rather just pay more for a better PC with more than 8GB of VRAM that is more future proof. The 8gb VRAM is the main damage cause if it had 16gb of VRAM than they could have priced it a 100 dollars higher than whatever price they got now and it would still be appealing to many cause they have the peace of mind.

None of this post makes any sense.

Steam consoles are niche at best, only available at Steam's own store. It will never be mainstream.
If Sony even feels like their MAU and their PS store is losing steam because they release their stuff on Steam...they will just stop doing so.
What they get from PC is nothing compared to what they get from their own ecosystem, subscriptions, etc.

And "stupidly enticing their customers to migrate to PC"? As we speak PS5 is above everything else on Amazon in almost every place on earth. (including even Switch 2 in almost every country i checked). Next year they are getting Wolverine, Saros as PS5 exclusives. They will release Marvel Tokon and then GTAVI will release on their consoles with a marketing deal (which they have for GTA for a while now). There's literally no signs of the market shifting away from their platform. If anything it seems like this gen will last longer than the previous one.

They also barely released a PC game this year. Stuff like Gran Turismo 7, Demons Souls, Astrobot, Ghost of Yotei aren't there. Spider-Man 2 and Ragnarok did a lot worse than its predecessors on PC even if released much closer to their initial release date as well. Sony also removed any mentions of PC gaming from their quarter results for 2 quarters already.

If anything Sony would be smart to sell their games through a PC storefront where they get 100% of the revenue, crossbuy with PS consoles as well. And that's the rumors as well.

Steam Machines fundamental weaknesses will be price and the Linux based OS.

Those two will make it the albatross that its predecessor was.

Playstation will sell more consoles in a quarter than steam machines will sell their entire time on the market.

Steam console isn't out yet. This is a prediction IF they continue on the same path and port all their games on Steam.

I understand about the PC storefront but MS (with their trillions dollars) tried it and failed because both Sony and MS stores suck. And Playstation Store on PC will also suck.

Sony isn't smart at all. They put Jim Ryan (the "why would anybody play this?" guy) in charge and he destroyed Playstation 1st party brand in only a few years. Thankfully the PS5 is their best hardware and the Store already was there and third parties run great on it but that's not thanks to Ryan at all.

It's implied in this thread but I don't see reason for the comparison. A small personal computer using SteamOS with a large gaming library missing some games available on Windows.

A PlayStation published library composed of new multiplayer games and catalog single player games, if ported at all. Waiting some years for games available day one on PS; Death Stranding 2, Ghost of Yotei, Saros, Wolverine, GTA6 then the 2027 announced and unannounced PS Studios releases like Intergalactic. DS2 probably 2026 PC release, Yotei late 2027. That's a long time in this industry with loads of missed gaming hype cycles requiring elite level patience. Steam machine will entice many people including its higher than console price range but it's not a PlayStation.

Two different devices for two different groups. With some overlap the pros of one device turn to cons for others.

Looking ahead to PS6 I see no reason to change plan. Your post almost implies an advantageous day one releases on PC next generation. Those porting times can be further delayed or cancelled at any moment to favour continued success of the console ecosystem.

Regarding Microsoft's rather unique console strategy. Since Xbox console with its own code base and software means little to Microsoft's overall strategy compared to what PlayStation means to Sony's company strategy as a consumer and entertainment brand. The upcoming Windows devices always made more sense for MS.

One side effect of Sony effectively strengthening Steams library is how SteamOS affects MS and future gaming PC purchases. Finally some competition on PC to choose from; SteamOS or Windows.

Why this would bother Sony? People forget that PlayStation ecosystem is stronger than ever… PC market for Sony is just an appetizer with very small relevance in the great scheme of things…

Sony will never stop putting games on PC. Yes Astrobot, Gran Turismo 7, Demons Souls and Ghost of Yotei aren't on there now but eventually they could be. Shadps4 emulator is getting better day by day so eventually Gran Turismo 7 will be working on there as for Astrobot and Demon Souls those could get emulated if there is a PS5 emulator. Ghost of Yotei will be on PC for sure since Tsushima did well on PC.

Exactly. People that enjoy console gaming will get it first and be happy. PC people can get it later and they'll be happy. Win for everybody.

with its pc pricing and sub ps5 performance,
it means ps6 will look like a steal even at $600+
thanks gabe!

People are saying sales of the Steam Machine will be similar to the Steam Deck... honestly it all boils down to price.

At $1,000+ I don't even see it hitting Steam Deck numbers. Sony has nothing to worry about, PlayStation 6 is pretty much guaranteed to succeed. The line up is already favoring that generation with how long games take to develop
