GOG News and Updates 2013

Any chance we'll see Rune on GOG? I was always confusing Rune and Severance back in the day but never got a chance to play either one.
It's kinda weird it isn't. Human Head has the distribution rights to it so it's probably more an issue of it just slipping through the cracks. Maybe the release of Severance will bring attention to Rune's absence.

Multiplayer was awesome and it holds up pretty damn well with the Unreal DX10 renderer/fix.

Legendary for his Steam hatred.
Stop seething dude.

Rune wasn't all that good IMO. It was fun but only worth a rental (ps2 version anyway), but Blade of Darkness is a classic. Bought it on a whim and it remains one of my favorite fantasy games, the combat and gore system have yet to be even matched much less exceeded.
Dunno if GOG will get it but Steam has it.
Thanks. I'll grab it once I play through some of my backlog.

There was no reason to redirect the discussion towards my opinions of Steam. A quick glance at my Steam account would tell you that I do buy games there.

Had no idea King of Dragon Pass was on GOG. Picked it up from the sale though.

Whoa, when did Blade of Darkness show up? Either way, the game is pretty awesome. Definitely nabbing it.

GOG is really doing a fantastic job these days.

Thanks.
At max resolution the frame-rate takes a sizable hit (30-40 fps) but I'll live.

Two releases; Secret Agent, yet another of their romp through Apogee's back catalogue, and I *think* one which cropped up fairly recently in the "Games you remember; names you don't" thread. And one I've been looking out for, Magic Carpet 2

I think it's got to the stage that we can start guessing each Tuesday what Apogee title will be coming next. Hoping for Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure!

They're also having a weeklong promo: Pick 5 games, save 80%. I'd say the selection is quite good:

Witcher: Enhanced Edition, The
Legend of Grimrock
Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, The
Alan Wake's American Nightmare
Alan Wake
Divinity 2: Developer's Cut
Inquisitor
Deponia
Back to the Future: The Game
A New Beginning - Final Cut
Sam & Max Beyond Time and Space
Sam & Max Save the World
Tiny and Big: Grandpa's Leftovers
Capsized
Defender's Quest
Puddle
King’s Bounty: Crossworlds GOTY
Runaway 3: A Twist of Fate
Pid
Lucius

I only ever need 2 or 3 games from that list, the rest I got either in previous sales or some weeks ago =/

Hrmm, as I recall, Magic Carpet 2 fixed the issue with the first game where the speed it ran at was insanely inconsistent depending on how many CPU cycles were available at any given moment. Wonder if it fixed my other pet peeve, where vertical aim was flipped and couldn't be unflipped?

I almost wish the source code for these games were available, to allow for modern source ports of them... The first game has really high potential, but it's mired in some questionable design decisions that can't be circumvented.

Secret Agent looks a lot like Crystal Caves, right down to having a near-identical protagonist. Hrmm.

Yes

Yeah, they produced both games on the same engine. I *think* CC is the earlier of the two titles, but don't quote me on that. Most notable difference: CC had a hub level with lots of doors leading to the individual levels, SAM had a top-down map screen.

Hope it's OK to ask this in this thread, but anyone wanna make a trade for Tiny and Big along with Armored Princess GotY? I can't do Paypal payments, but I can trade steam codes for them >_>;
gog.com allows gifting by giving you a code for the game when u choose to gift it.

Yeah, Secret Agent is basically similar to Crystal Caves, except it's better and is improved all around. It's a great game, and might be my favorite of Apogee's "really small characters" platform games, like these two and the four CGA ones (Pharaoh's Tomb, etc.).

And yes, it was released after Crystal Caves.

IMO this is new thread worthy? I've never played Alan Wake so I'm definitely picking those up and then some. Extremely good deal.

So Magic Carpet 2 is a lot better than the original. I mean, the game didn't change much but the minor control and gameplay tweaks are great. And it's nice that it doesn't suffer from the crazy speed fluctuations of the first game.

That's a pretty good deal. Pretty, pretty, pretty good.

Snagged Grimrock, Alan Wake, Tiny & Big, Pid and Puddle for $13 total, not including the import fee my credit card charges me for ordering from gog.

Sure, any time there's news / sales anyone feels to be thread worthy is almost always fair grounds for a new thread. Started a new thread for it here.

Is it normal that I had to lower the resolution to 1440x900 in Alan Wake to get it to run near 60 fps on my Radeon 6850? Lowering the other graphic settings didn't seem to have much of an effect.

It's really scary how many of those Apogee games I recognize. When I was a kid, all I could afford were the shareware versions and I must've played all of them.

LOL at Legend of Grimlock's tutorial failing to explain how you actually ATTACK stuff. After spending around 5 minutes killing the first snail in the game by repeatedly throwing stuff at it for 1-3 damage, getting it to move, and picking the stuff up to throw again, I finally looked online and saw that you have to right click on the weapon in your characters' portraits to attack.

Yeah, that's a bit of an omission but in all fairness, that's how you attacked in all the games that Grimrock is modeled after. They probably just assumed anyone playing it would already know.

I need a 5th game my friends

Witcher
Divinity
Both Alan Wake games

I am thinking Riddick, but I already have it one Steam so maybe not, unless the GOG version is better(stupid Targes)

Finally going to play Baldur's Gate II complete edition that I bought like two years ago. Are there any essential mods other than what's listed here? Booted it up for a few minutes just to test them and it looks pretty great in widescreen with the bigger fonts.

Legend of Grimrock is pretty sweet.

All GOG games are free of DRM, so yea, buy that one.

Today:

Catacombs pack. Best described as Mitochondrial Eve for the FPS genre. The first game's a top-down action dungeon crawl; the second is similar, but shifted into 3D, and the remaining three make up a shareware trilogy that's fundamentally Wolfenstein in EGA. A little more interactivity, though, if I remember right.

Omikron: The Nomad Soul. We've gone from the prehistory of the FPS to the ur-Example for Characters who look like David Bowie in games, with a game that has the *actual* David Bowie in.

Somebody post the image of what FTL is like after playing it for 5, 10 then 15 minutes please (at work and am unable to find it on the net atm =p)

I only played the one id made, but apparently the others are just more of the same. It's interesting if you want to see how the genre/engine progressed, but I wouldn't call it a "good old game". Think of a slower EGA Wolfenstein with less enemies, getting stuck on walls and really basic puzzles.

I'd say the genre really starts with Doom, otherwise we can go back to games like Maze War. I wish there was a way to port Pathways into Darkness, that's an actually good early 90s dungeon crawler/fps hybrid.

I disagree, actually; I had a blast playing the first of the Softdisk-developed 3D Catacombs (made after id had moved to Apogee and was making Wolfenstein 3D), so this is very likely gonna end up in my collection. I do kinda wish somebody could make a source port to allow WASD+mouse control and such, though.

Man, I've already got quite a bit to pick up when I get some spare dough: System Shock 2, Shadow Warrior, Magic Carpet 2, Catacombs Pack...

About all I remember about Omikron was that it was a Dreamcast game. Nice David Bowie song for the intro, though.
