Star Wars: A new hope :blu ray. 10/10

It looks so beautiful. The detail is amazing. I really felt like I was watching it for the first time.

Empire will be next tonight.

I strangely enjoyed the Ninth gate somehow... nothing amazing but fun enough to keep me interested plus dat "surprising" twist ;)

Glad to hear the 2nd Sherlock is supposedly pretty good, i didn't care much for the first one, about to watch the 2nd now, hopefully it won't disappoint!

it's got the same style, so, if that's something you didn't like in the first then its sequel will disappoint you as well

Loved it as well, but i DID get some strange pixelation in some faster moving scenes, what could that be about?

Do you have a particular scene in mind? If by faster moving scenes you mean the ship to ship battles, I think that is because of the technology available at the time.

I could go back and recheck, because I did not notice while viewing.

Some shots in the desert were amazing, seeing the grains of sand for the first time after all these years. Just wow. I love blu ray so much.

I was thinking last night that even if a new medium comes around, I will be sticking to blu ray for a long long time.

Not really no, i just remember being irritated because of it, it's been a month or so since i watched it, unsure whether it was a TV calibration problem or whatever on my side or whether it's like that in ALL the BDs

watched Bronson for the sixth time

Tom Hardy deserved the fucking oscar

Hardy to the Oscars, "Come on you fucking cunts!"

The Evil Dead- That was seriously awesome. Cheesy, B-movie goodness. The way the bodies decompose at the end is great, so over the top and disgusting. I wish more movies today did that, the remake will probably just use CGI :(

Pretty sure I read an article where the director said that there is not a single shot of CG in the new movie, hope it's true.

Rock of Ages

Offensive. Zero charm. The actors looked like they were having a great time, but this truly was tortuous. I don't know why Julianne Hough continues to find work, honestly.

Watched Take Shelter (2011) last night. A pretty damn good movie. Michael Shannon plays a man who is being tormented by intense foreboding dreams of coming disaster. They start to effect him so much that he begins to question his own sanity. Overall, quite a powerful drama. The dream sequences were very well done and gave me a few scares. Great performance by Shannon.

The Elementary Particles (2006)

The best movie I've watched all year and one of the most (awesomely) depressing movies I have ever had the bittersweet pleasure of seeing. It's like a lower-budget production of a far more misanthropic and demented Charlie Kaufman. This made me want to castrate myself while crying more than Shame did, and is all-around a much better, smarter (albeit more satirical) film. I stumbled upon this hearing someone recommend Michel Houellebecq, and now I feel I must read his books. Do check this out.

It's one of Polanski's worst movies, but that still makes it better than 90% of all other films.

Pretty much, going by his filmography it ain't that great, but standing on it's own I thought it was a decent movie

Edit: like how I just quoted you and pretty much just said exactly what you did? lol

Better Luck Tomorrow - 2003

I first heard about this movie on a Giant Bomb live stream a couple weeks ago. Jeff mentioned how the Fast and Furious series character Han was actually in another earlier movie before Tokyo Drift from the same director, Justin Lin. Loving the character (he's the single best character in the whole FF series), I had to see this just for him.

Happy to see it was a pretty good high-school indie movie. Deals with some interesting things and handles the high-school-iness very well. Han is a bit of a different dude in the movie, but he's a kid in high-school and there's a pretty impactful moment at the end that I could totally see his transformation into FF Han. Also he has a muscle car so it totally fits!

Life of Pi is a magical experience, the best use of CGI since Avatar. Every frame is a work of art. The main actor is great and I loved his relationship with the tiger. Ang Lee knocked it out of the park.

This and Lincoln are my only two remainders to see from last year. Saw The Hobbit last night, wasn't impressed at all.

The only thing that I did like was Bilbo, much more than Frodo. He was awesome. Otherwise, incredibly weak. Boring, dragged on way too long. Visuals were nothing special. Pretty much a snooze fest. The ending was pretty awesome tho.

Excluding the frames with awful CGI.
Those sharks were rough.

Don't get me wrong, the tiger in Pi looked fantastic. But there was some very spotty CG throughout.

Oh I definitely agree, the fidelity isn't quite there all the time. But really, like Avatar (though that obviously had a bigger budget), it's the art that makes it all work. So colorful and vibrant, real creativity. It's refreshing to see a movie use CG for stuff other than explosions and vehicles and whatnot. Actually reminds me of the beautiful work they do on Boardwalk with all the backgrounds and whatnot.

The One is so bad. Just watched it again.

Who all here is on Criticker or Letterboxd? I have a some of you on Letterboxd but nobody on Criticker. It would be cool to compare some ratings with people.

Those of you who don't have a Criticker account, I encourage you to get one. Helps you keep track of all the films you see and gives you more range than the 4/5 star rating systems used by most other sites. Films can score 0-100.

@bud

That works great, too. I like the more social aspect of Criticker and Letterboxd.

*For those not familiar with Criticker, Tier is not the actual score you usually give it. For mine, tier 10 is movies with a score 10-9.

Anyways, saw Kick Ass. Holy shit that was awesome (a bit messed up though), girl kicked total ass. I wasn't expecting to see Nicolas Cage in it, that was cool. I thoroughly enjoyed it. 7/10

For some reason I thought this was a joke post, as it didn't seem like the kind of film you go for.;p I enjoyed it too, although not a movie I care to re-watch ever.

the only scenes worth rewatching are any involving hit girl and big daddy.

mclovin and kick ass can fuck off. i'm only watching the sequel for jim carrey.

I also watched Kick-Ass the other day for the first time since its theatrical release because of the trailer for the sequel. The characters of Kick-Ass and Red Mist (both in and out costume) are quite terrible, Nicolas Cage channeling his inner Adam West was great and obviously Hitgirl was the best thing about the film.

I also thought the musical choices throughout the entire film were 'off'* but that's just personal I guess

*Except for the Per Qualche Dollaro In Piu theme, which worked great

you're right about the musical choices. that piece from sunshine during the strobe light attack is great music, but it's edited in so poorly in the film. it's really jarring at the end of the firefight when she gets the jump on the two dudes.

i swear i've seen youtube fanvideos with better use of music than that.

This is funny because I went to a preview Q+A screening with Vaughn about four weeks before the film released and asked him if the different pieces of Alex Garland's music were temp tracks. lulz

Atomised and The Elementary Particles are the same thing? Just from what I'm searching. Sounds intriguing, might put it on my amazon wishlist.

Taken 2

This was better than I thought it would be, but my expectations bottomed out after all the bad reviews and bad word of mouth. I felt like it was more of the same.

Dredd

Did not like this film whatsoever and I can't understand the praise bestowed upon it. I'm glad it was rated R, but that still clashes with the way the main character looks. I can't take a guy seriously if he's wearing a punch bowl helmet on his head. The slow motion high as fuuuuuuck sequences were redundant too.

Mostly a combo of being better than other blockbuster action movies recently and the nostalgia of a gritty 80s style one-location, no-nonsense, no frills Carpenter/Die Hard style action movie.

lol at "punch bowl helmet". Do you like any comic book movies?

Comes down to whether you like Dredd as a character or not i guess...

So i saw Sherlock Holmes 2 yesterday.

I must say i did end up enjoying it a whole lot more than the first!! Not sure if it was the tone which stroke me as a bit more "lighthearted" than the first or something else, but it was definitely more fun to watch!

It isn't, but I had fun. It's not like I was taking it too seriously. It's not a movie I'll likely rewatch either. I did give it too high of a score though, perhaps because I've been in sort of a drought (and looks so much better than the last movie I saw before it). lol

I'm seeing Anna Karenina today, I wonder how that will turn out.

lol you're my 74th best

Cool ;)
