One month from today: BioShock Infinite

Dunno why some of you are looking forward to the IGN review. How many years has it been since they've given a hugely anticipated game anything less than a 9.4? They don't give popular games bad scores, period.

I'm surprised people read IGN at all considering these kind of situations.

There are certainly better, more reputable, and more respectable places to get your gaming news and reviews.

GAF gets excited for IGN reviews? This is news to me.

I think we look forward to laughing about them and cutting them down to size, that's about it.

Last time I remember IGN gave a big name a "bad" score was Assassin's Creed 1.

:lol

The way I see it, reading a fawning, hyperbolic positive review might temporarily increase my hype before the game releases, but then while I'm playing I'll be keenly aware that I'm not experiencing the heights of ecstasy felt by the reviewer (simply because a game has never made me feel the way some reviewers purport to feel) and it will distract me from enjoying the experience on its own terms.

There's basically no upside to reading that stuff for me.

When I rant about why Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception is better than just about anything on the market -- about why I think it's my new favorite game of all time -- I don't talk about the firefights, the new ability to throw grenades back at enemies or collecting the game's 101 well-hidden treasures. I talk about the heart-wrenching section where Drake is by himself and completely lost. He's on his last legs, he's desperate, and I'm right there with him. I'm pushing him through the journey at hand and it's clear that it's a game, but as he stumbles, seeks shelter and loses hope, my heart breaks.

How can anyone read this shit and not have their eyes roll out of their goddamn skull

some neoGAFers are gluttons for punishment or simply need another five million game journalism controversies before they learn previews and reviews are essentially worthless for assessing a game's value anymore. *shrug*

That Uncharted 3 review is the biggest load of crap I've ever read in my life.

This seems to be a pervasive problem with video game journalism.

Hyperbole is not tantamount to possessing a unique voice. Especially if the majority denigrate their prose with such "scintillating" material.

What can be done about players that buy into these reviews, then accost the game and its developers for not meeting their lofty expectations? Do we blame the public relations team? The developers? The journalists? The player that amasses these expectations?

It is a little much, yeah, but I really did feel for that part.

Just one more jab at IGN, I promise!

"GTA IV gives us characters and a world with a level of depth previously unseen in gaming and elevates its story from a mere shoot-em-up to an Oscar-caliber drama. Every facet of Rockstar's new masterpiece is worthy of applause. Without question, Grand Theft Auto IV is the best game since Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time."

Really looking forward to trying this on my NV Surround setup, and in 3d surround. I imagine playing this on 3 screens and in 3d is going to be mind blowingly crazy.

Since it is a 'AMD' game though, I hope nvidia has their shit together and we don't have another tomb raider situation.

Yeah, Greg is the worst game critic I've ever encountered. He's over-zealous, inarticulate, and just not a very good writer.

Is that for real?!?

So then everyone on GAF should stop posting new news?

Some people post new news (and promo materials) more than others.

I was just joking around; I'm not accusing you of being an actual viral marketer. But don't pretend like your style of posting isn't sometimes more promotional and less conversational.

It gets tough. Sometimes it feels like we've covered all the bases so far, so some new news link or a picture is used to spark up some sort of discussion again. The TR thread got pretty wacky after the reviews dropped a week early. It was like we really had nothing to talk about which is why all of those bizarre comparisons started coming up. We discussed Spec Ops for at least a two pages in that thread. lol

I don't begrudge anyone their enthusiasm and they can express it however they want.

I was initially motivated to poke fun at him because he complained that his posts were being replicated on the official forum, suggesting that he feels a sense of ownership over the promo materials he's basically helping Irrational spread around in the first place.
