Oculus Rift unboxing and article

Nah, I mean Derrick at least claims that he is uninterested because he only cares about gameplay. That is understandable, though somewhat shortsighted in my opinion. But dismissing it based on aesthetics of a dev kit seems a bit much.

Who cares about the looks of this anyway? Are you going to be wearing these in public? What matters much more is how they function. I don't care if it was a garbage bag over my head if the damn thing did its job perfectly.

The only thing that is important... are crazy faces we will make while wearing it. :D

Too ugly.
Will wait for the Oculus™ Beats™ by Dre® Tokyo Drift© version.

I wonder how much jostling it can take before the image is too jarring. Pair low latency warp drivers with a 3D camera and the AR possibilities are monumental (and fraught with potential litigation.) Imagine Go-Karts with video-game kart features. You can't use that idea it's mine. Imagine completing an obstacle course controlling yourself from an isometric perspective. You can't use that idea either.

The human mind is quite susceptible to this trickery.

Let me guess, you dig Apple?
Hey now, I love Apple stuff but could give two shits about how a VR headset looks as long as it works.

Reading The Verge's article has convinced m to wait or the consumer version rather than getting the dev version now

To this day I still don't understand the hype this ugly device is getting.

Keep in mind that what they're releasing this year are the developer kits.

The consumer version, which is getting released next year, will not only be more aesthetically pleasing, it will have better components (higher-res screens, hopefully lower latency, lower weight, etc).

For a developer kit, it has been getting a lot of hype. I know that there are many non-developers who ordered one of these based on the hype, which I don't really understand. It's not a full launch, so the library of games you can play with one of these is basically non-existent at this point. Enthusiasts will be enthusiasts I guess.

Not dissing on Apple, I like Apple too. But there's a certain type of personality that Apple in particular attracts in regards to visuals.

I was just joking, Derrick comes off as an integralist sometimes, but his position is indeed understandable.

The problem with the OR's perception is that many, many gamers don't know how it works and what it does, or fail to understand the immense, paradigmatic shift this device is bringing.

Most of the excitement comes from the premises and the promises, rather than the execution itself (even though it is already incredible).

But I'm biased, I'm a VR whore.

That thing looks ridiculous. I'll stick to console/pc gaming.

It looks ridiculous?, do you use your consoles as jewelry or ornaments? As if the concept of its looks being important wasn't ludicrous enough this is a development kit, do you care how your current consoles development kit looks?

I hope you're joking.

No I am not joking. The looks don't bother me at all (although it isn't the prettiest), I have been following the news about this device since its inception but I still don't understand the hype it is getting on Neogaf. Maybe it is just me. Feel free to enlighten me though

Pretty much. When you get John Carmack, Gaben, Cliffy B and others in a video claiming that the thing is awesome, no enthusiast is going to be able to help themselves.

This is good, because without them, no developer would bother adding in-game support until the retail version came out. By people like me (that aren't devs) coming along, support is more rapidly rolled out. It's win-win.

Unless a bunch of spoiled, ignorant jackasses get the devkit and go "IT'S ALL PIXELATED, WHAT IS THIS BULLSHIT!?"

VR has been a nerd dream for decades, but it could never be done because it was cost prohibitive and the technology wasn't there yet. Now, we have the technology and we're a year or two out from the launch of a proper VR device. That's why it's getting hype.

Clearly not.

It offers a tantalizing glimpse of a future of affordable, high-quality virtual reality.

Can you not see the appeal of that to everyone who has ever read any science fiction, or ever felt immersed in a 3D game?

Do you know what it does? Tell me, without looking it up. Otherwise, wtf dude.

what resolution is the screen in the headset for now?

I know they're targeting 1080p next year or whenever, but what resolution is the 7" screen?

It's 1280x800, but only half the horizontal resolution per eye (since the screen is split in half with each eye getting its own view).

It's going to be very pixelated, and you're going to be able to see the black space between pixels. From the reviews I've read, the human brain tends to smooth things out, but it's not going to look like an HD display, or even an SD display seen from the standard viewing distance. The point of the kit is for developers to take it and figure out how to make games for VR, so an HD screen wasn't necessary or cost effective.

This is the beginning of a beautiful thing. I can't even imagine how many incredible ideas are being dreamed up right now. And many devs are about to go to work with this stuff.

If you've really following the info on this device since release and you can't understand why people would be hyped about it then I don't understand you. Can you enlighten me how anyone, especially a gamer, can't understand other gamers being hyped about a VR gaming device that actually works?

This article from yesterday might interest you (he played 6 rounds of Badwater in VR mode) and gives a very candid review of the experience. Sounds a bit strange but VERY cool at the same time.

Makes sense. thx guys

Which part of that is not exciting?

When has virtual reality worked before? Is there an actual market for this besides enthusiasts? Will this get the support in years to come? If the device is so enticing why is an unknown company funded by kickstarter making this and not a tech giant with millions of R&D money?

These are just a few of the questions I keep asking myself when reading about the oculus. Maybe I am crazy for thinking these things but something in my head is telling me to hold off until the hypetrain and the pr bull has died down.

All those questions have been answered by the hundreds of articles and interviews about the Rift. You are clearly not reading about it very thoroughly.
