XBLA (Xbox Live Arcade) News, Announcements, Reviews, and Impressions Thread

Tempura of the Dead and Aban Hawkins really need more exposure, man I really need to just make a small business here in Japan of hiring these indie devs that don't seem to have enough business sense (or English skill) to take their games to the west...maybe someday......

For XBLA - I wonder how well the Scott Pilgrim Online DLC is selling, I really have a hard time paying 400 for a game I bought like 18 months ago...but it would be fun to play MP, who knows even if it has a little bit of the spark that made Castle Crashers sell so well maybe they will make a lot of $$

Quick/weird question: If I download a xbla demo and then that game gets delisted, can I still purchase it through the demo in game option?

I'd like to do this with a few older games I don't want to buy right now but may in the future.

Demos...

Altered Beast: I just think that this is fundamentally not a good game. The jumping is rigid, the punching and kicking are both pretty ineffective. The short, auto-scrolling-ish levels, the emphasis on killing the wolves to power-up... it's just not good. I do think the visual design is very interesting and inspired and obviously the little voices are cute for how old they are.

Band of Bugs: This is about my tenth time playing through this demo, and I never enjoy it enough to want to buy it. I actually own a DRM-free PC copy already so maybe I'm stupid for playing the demo here but... it's a low-fi fairly simple bug-themed strategy RPG. The closest comparison I can think of is maybe Vandal Hearts, in that it's simple. The animations are okay, the graphics are kind of ho-hum, and there are some real early-gen UI and presentation issues. It seems to work well enough mechanically, but never really grabs me. The music reminds me of other NinjaBee games, nice and hummable but simple. One weird thing is that the game now has avatar support so your team now consists of your avatar and a bunch of bugs and there's no text addressing the fact that the other bugs treat you like a bug but there I am, You Don't Know Jack shirt and all. I do like some of the environmental skills (pushing enemies back, drowning in water, freezing water into ice, melting ice to have the enemies drop. One thing that makes it simple is that since you don't pick your own party and there's no perma-death, and character leveling is in-between missions only and I think pre-ordained, it feels more like a puzzle game than a strategy game. Levels are clearly meant to be solved in a certain way. I'd maybe buy this for $2.50, but like I said as-is I think I'll just eventually play through my PC copy.

Burnout Crash: Welcome to Autolog powered by autolog, where you can autolog your progress so you can autolog with your autolog friends! But seriously, I played the game at a friend's house and it seemed like there was a decent amount of variety and content, but it's a very strange game. There's nothing quite like it. It's more of a sort of puzzle game, what with the very contained method of motion and the score attack kind of quality to it. Even the presentation, the music, and the voiceover is kind of weird. I could see myself playing this, but not paying much for it.

Darkstalkers Resurrection: It's a 2-pack of Darkstalkers Revenge (which I played a bunch of as a kid) and Darkstalkers 3 (which I have never played before). GGPO, Vault system--and like previous Vault games, you can earn tons of Vault points in the demo but you can't see what kind of content is actually in the Vault so it's hard to say if it's any good. The controls and How to Play pages are good. The visuals haven't aged all that well but I still think the character designs are top notch. I enjoyed my time with Darkstalkers Revenge more than DS3. Ultimately I think having played all the Capcom fighting game demos, they've gotten better at figuring out what to include to try to sell you a classic fighting game as time has gone on.

Deathspank: So I've finally come full circle to trying the original Deathspank and I liked it more this time. The jokes connected more, I appreciated the level design and colours a little better than in the other two games, it seemed like there was a good amount of content. It did ask me to buy the game an awful lot though, and $15 is crazy. I'll try to pick it up for $2.50 or less on PC. This is a much more positive impression than I had the first time around.

Eets: Chowdown: It's a Lemmingsalike where you place static objects around the screen and fire them off as a mindless idiot wanders around. You have to safely carry it through the level to the end. It was okay. I have an Eets game on PC. Meh. There was also an alternate mode which was basically a single screen twin-stick shooter meets typing of the dead on the controller. A constant stream of enemies attacked and you used visible on-screen key prompts to kill them. It only let me play for 4 minutes during the demo and hadn't gotten tough at that point, wonder if it gets harder?

One aside, as well--next week is the week that Games on Demand has more games than XBLA.

Band of Bugs is so mind-numbingly average. Or at least it starts that way and I've never been compelled to go any farther despite owning it. It just moves so slowly and didn't impress.

I got into Burnout Crash to reach the end. Despite the frustrations with the random elements there's enough going on that I was often on the edge of my seat trying to force my will upon the game to get me extra stars and to not let cars off the screen and end things early. Equal parts fun and frustration. And I hate the Autolog system because they remove global leaderboards in favor of it.

I've spent more time in Eets: Chowdown on that mini game than I have the main game. The mini game gets absolutely crazy once you get far enough into it. It's even more fun in multiplayer if I recall correctly? You should check out videos. I think it's nearly worth the price of admission by itself despite being as simple as a Flash game.

Band of Bugs was great when it came out and was basically the only option for turn-based strategy on 360. There's a lot more choice now in both retail and arcade so I don't know how it stacks up, but I certainly enjoyed it 5 years ago. In fact, where did NinjaBee go?

I picked up Mensa on sale, as well as Chime for the remaining 400 I had. Mensa is pretty lazy and lame - probably not quite what Mensa had in mind when they signed the contract - with far too easy minigames and too few that feel like they actually exercise your brain. It's a very easy set of achievements, though, so that's nice.

Chime is better and I think I like it a lot. At first I thought "coverage" meant that you had to have active "quads" covering the entire screen, which would've been impossible and scared me off from the game for a day or two, but then I played again and realized that you can obtain "coverage" by re-using space you've used before. Eh, I'm sure none of that makes sense if you haven't played it, but I enjoy it well enough. It's got sensible pricing too, as I would've been pissed to find it having only 5 stages had I paid 800+ for it.

Updating at the moment, double check prices before buying. I'll update throughout the day.

If Sales and Specials app doesn't update today I think it can be assumed that it's been shitcanned.

I would be really angry. I changed my account region four weeks ago (moved from France to the UK) to gain access to those S&S things because they looked amazing during all these weeks. But since then it has been nothing more than the two Bionic Commandos.

AND lately during the GoD sales, I couldn't buy a thing with my great amount of MSP because GoDs are country-locked, I always got an error message. So I missed everything. And I'm stuck for two more months. So if S&S is being abandonned like that... Well.

Ugh fuck me. I wish I wasn't so impatient. A couple of weeks ago I spent 2400 on those three Brotherhood and Revelations DLCs to finish out the achievements in those titles. =/ Now they are 1200 points total.

My recommendations based on those sales:

Highway robbery, must-buys:

Lost Archive DLC from AC Revelations at 400 points
Outland at 400 points
Beyond Good and Evil at 400 points

Oh nice, a random ass sale on Tour De France! It seems so lame but I'm curious about how it really plays, but not curious enough to pay 800 for it.

Rotastic at half off is nice too. Picking up both this weekend.

They did Kingdom for Keflings, then Akimi Village which is basically a Keflings spinoff for PSN, then World of Keflings (which just got a W8 port and is getting a Wii U port later this year) + all the DLC for it.

They also published Ancients of Ooga, which is basically Cloning Clyde 2, spiritually. The developer for that was J Kenworthy Games which became Bacon Wrapped Games who were working on Killer Kenn (which would have been basically Cloning Clyde 3), but their website is down.

Not well, if you listen to the last guy that reviewed it in this thread *coughs*

Yet another boring DOTW where I have almost every game/DLC that I bought before. My points are safe for this week. I'm hoping that for more original DOTW besides the usual recycled stuff. If anything, more Games on Demand sales are always a good thing or even an Xbox Originals sale (wishful thinking there).

On another note, I checked out Phantom Breaker: Battlegrounds last week. I only got past the first stage, but there's something about it that annoys me. Maybe it's that it looks similar to Scott Pilgrim or the voices. Otherwise, it's a solid Beat Em Up game and I'm a sucker for Beat Em Up games/Brawlers if they're done right.

Played the beta also and REALLY enjoyed it. Multiplayer modes were good fun in vs and can imagine it will be even better in local play.
Story mode was a right laugh, loved the intro narration. Can't wait to buy it in few weeks time.

Just saw this on my Facebook, Mark of the Ninja is getting DLC:

  • A new level, set in a flashback to the early life of Dosan (the ninja’s tattoo artist) that will set the stage for the events that transpire in Mark of the Ninja.
  • A new style of play, which includes a nonlethal takedown ability, and provides a hybrid of lethal and nonlethal approaches to the game.
  • Two new items, one more geared to stealth and concealment and one a bit more direct. Both the items and the new play style will be available in the main game as well as the new level. (more details at a later date).
  • Finally, we’ve added a ton of developer commentary to the main game. All the original levels will feature a number of commentary nodes that discuss various aspects of the game’s creation, anecdotes, at least two history lessons and other behind the scenes info from nearly everyone on the team.

Excited for new MotN content, but one level, one new move and two new items is the definition of meh.

Altered Beast is an awful game that is proof that maybe we all had awful taste back then. I now have no idea how any of us put up with it.

I think it was a combination of going from NES to Genesis graphics, and the presentation was amazing at the time. The transformation was a sight to behold and super exciting, the setting was awesome. It was an aesthetic home run. It just plays like balls.

And it taught us that steroids are amazing!

AB was nice for it's time - not Sega's best arcade, but it was fun to play back then. The local bodega had this and E-Swat side by side at one point.

I skipped school virtually everyday while that lasted.

I just wanted to thank Stump for the reviews, very good reads and a good signpost to games. if you need some Gold hit me up, I have 3 months in code form if you want.

Secret Ponchos will be coming sometime this year and will be playable at PAX East. It's a multiplayer spaghetti-western isometric shooter with a few different characters. Developer is ex Blizzard, Hasbro and Radical Entertainment.

Sounds like a horrible idea to create a multiplayer-game for XBLA in these times (guaranteed botmatches after a month) and I don't really think it looks that interesting, but hey! At least they have a different style than most games!

I'll take whatever they offer. MotN is the best stealth game I've played.

Ohhh, I like this. Maybe Microsoft has learned a valuable lesson from Steam.

More excited about sales on tv shows and movies than games at this point, already have more games than I can play before next gen starts going.

There were some pretty kick ass deals on movie/tv stuff back in the fall on the black friday sale, got Community S1 and S2 for $10 a piece.

That's what I keep reading here and there. I agree but I would add that it seems a bit too late for me.

Late how? Their last sale was awesome, and if the stuff I read on the internet is any indication, was a huge success.

I would like to see some solid numbers from the sale, now that I think of it.

Here's hoping for a Witcher 2 sale!

It's better than Scott Pilgrim. Much better. And it has online play. Too bad it won't sell as much.

^^^^^
Yep, it really is a fantastic beat 'em up with delicious combo mechanics, sweet pixel art and animations (and 4p multi online/couch).

And it's never too late to follow on Steam's footsteps, although is the Spring sale for Gold only?
