ROG Xbox Ally X - Reviews Thread

So does this wipe the floor with the S2? I would hope for twice the price it would. I assume it does DLSS or whatever and that?

Personally I will wait for the Steam Deck 2 whenever that may come

It doesn't "wipe the floor" with anything. The difference between low end and high end in handheld PCs really isn't that large. This is all AMD tech so no DLSS. FSR3 and XeSS depending on the game.

damn, kind of a shame. I want to see some true next gen handhelds. Probably why Valve is waiting.

I will express my opinion, but it seems to me that all this is not the biggest problem of this device.

We just need to break away from brands and focus on general terms. The beauty of portable consoles is that we can play games on the go, but before we can do that, developers have to take devkits, create code for the console, optimize it, and make sure everything works as intended. So, when you go to a store and buy a game for any portable console, you can be confident that the game will launch and work as the developer intended. You don't need to go into settings, you don't need to fix anything, configure anything, or adjust the game. You just insert the cartridge and start playing, the developers have done all the work for you. (I understand that this is in an ideal world, and there are problems with optimization, etc. but that's not what I'm talking about.)

In this particular case, you're simply buying a mobile PC running Windows 11, with all the ensuing consequences. This means you'll need to access game settings, tweak them for optimal performance, possibly install patches or fixes, etc. Naturally, no developers have dev kits for this machine, and no one will sit and optimize games for it. All the work involved in running games falls entirely on the end user. This is still getting worse, due to the laziness of developers, the crookedness of PC ports, and the constant increase in system requirements on PC.

That is, at the moment, without the support of Microsoft and game developers, it is just a portable PC running Windows 11 and nothing more, oh yeah, I forgot, at a price of 1000$
And it seems to me that under the circumstances, this is not the best proposal.

It's fine as a niche device, which most handheld PCs are. But everything you are saying is why only a few million handheld PCs are sold every year. There is just not enough widespread appeal from either the console or gaming PC sides of the equation.

Runs Doom TDA at 40fps apparently with mid to low settings (heard it in one review), I don't know the size of the floor you would wipe with that

Too expensive for what it offers. Valve had much better idea with their price point, I have no doubt Steam Deck 2 will only release when they can bring generational leap while keeping price at the same level.

Doesn't Cyberpunk 2077 look and run better on the Switch 2?
What do you mean by running and looking better?

Switch 2: low settings, ~30fps, NPCs cut, cuts on effects, shadows and details, 450-800p DLLs

RoGXboxAlly: Medium/High PC settings, ~45+FPS (80fps framegen), 1080p FSR 3.

P.S. The fact that you can activate FSr4 in RoGXboxAlly would make the discussion completely pointless about IQ results.

Not your whole Xbox library on the go, but I like the fact they are keeping existing purchases playable either through Cloud or Play Anywhere

Just got home from work and mine was waiting when I came in. Its a slick little unit. Got a pretty big PC catalog that im excited to finally get to. Will be nice not having to load up a console or anything when going out of town for work.
